The sequence with the shadow of the safety line at the wall was taken from a camera at front head. I don't see him carrying such thing. So I assume this was an insert from another walk with safety line, for dramatic effect.
In slacklining you would wear a waist harness and trail a safety line from that. You can find other videos of people wearing them, and using them when they fall. They must have used shots from multi takes, but he isn't wearing one in the full body shots.
you are a fucking idiot its called free solo look it up before you doubt on it. Dean Potter is the man and he also does free solol rock climbing as well
@TheATLAdventure: Learn about slacklining. When dudes like Dean practice they'll sometimes wear a harness and use a safety line. As the video clearly shows (and as Dean Potter is quite famous for doing many, many other times) he walked it without any backup. What you saw was a split second splice of a practice run.
@FuzzyJar really??? Then why edit the safety line off of his leg in that shot? You can see both legs in that shot, no line attached to either, just a safety line shadow that exists. He walked it with a safety line, and they edited the line out later. At the end, they forgot to edit it's shadow out.
@Konicava I don't think you understand the mentality of total dedication to a passion. If he dies, he'll die pursuing what he loves. While I, personally, don't think I would try this, I have massive respect for a person with this kind of dedication, skill and lust for life.
@CarlJibbs You call that lust for life? Or maybe lust for near death experience? Dude if you put anyone in a rope in the middle of a canyon, 9 out of 10 will fall and die.
@Konicava You've proved my point. He has a lust for life to the extent that he was willing (and able) to become that 1 guy out of 10 that does not fall. What you see isn't the product of sheer recklessness. No doubt, you have to be wired slightly differently, but I would put this in a similar category to Bruce Lee or "Man on Wire". . .What you see is the product of years of dedication to an extremely demanding mental and physical discipline.
@CarlJibbs Well I don't put equilibrists in the same "category" of one of the greatest martial artists to ever live, I don't care if you cross a fucking ocean on a 5 milimiter barbed wire.
Why is it fake? The lanyard doesn't help him to balance in the rope, it's "only" save his life in the worst case. He is unbelievably skilful independently the lanyard.
@TheATLAdventure not fake! during the walk when he has the go pro cam on his head he was walking with a leash. it was a practice walk. he did walk it free solo one direction for national geographic. they just put the footage of the 2 sends together in this short clip.
