I wanted to watch this after seeing Herbie Hancock perform this on PBS. I was amazed at how fast his hands moved. I wanted to listen to Oscar Levant play it. He considered himself the definitive interpreter of his friend Gerswin's work. Levant was a genius who crossed over to crazy (Howard Hughes perhaps another). Levant said himself, "there is a fine line between genius and insanity, I have erased this line."
The performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" in the movie is about twelve minutes long.. I have the whole film digitized from TCM.. if I get a chance, I'll clip out the full performance (including the conversation Robert Alda has with Oscar Levant before the concert, and the nightclub sceen afterwards) and post it.. by the way, Oscar Levant (visible in two balcony scenes) does the actual piano performance.. Alda was only "lip-sync-playing"..
@hrlaser Actually, the piece is longer, about seventeen minutes. But all of Leonard Bernstein's performances, live or otherwise, leave out two small chunks, and others also skip certain parts, including Gershwin's own. Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Slatkin, Andrew Litton and other conductors perform the whole thing, and Erich Kunzel's recording even restores some parts that were never heard before.
