"Brown sound" refers to the sound EVH used to get by running his amps off of a variac lowered to around 85-95 VAC instead of 120 VAC. So it was like a the amp was running during a half-power "brown out" instead of a "black out". It just is another term for creating tube sag.

To me brown sound is the sound that works pretty well for almost any type of music, with the exception of hardcore death metal

This pedal sounds good but not really brown sound.
