.NET is a rip-off of Java originally to be Windows-only. Microsoft has failed at eliminating Java with their Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish strategy.
.Net is a platform that "compiles" different languages into code that runs on an interpreter which does "just in time" compilation at runtime into OS calls and machine code.
The just-in-time compilation is why .Net apps look sluggish at times.
The point-and-click development environment you speak of has been around since VB, Delphi, and other Borland/Inprise tools and is not .Net specific.
It leaves no space on your hard-drive (considering that you constantly update windows Vista, which is the equivelant to suicide, if you have a laptop)
I am an almost-ex dotNET developer, meaning I have one dotNET app left for a client, and after that I am NEVER DOING ANOTHER dotNET APP AGAIN. It is stupid, frustrating, and you can do things faster and easier in almost any other platform.
I'm web developer, so I can't speak for programming for the desktop, but as far as the web is concerned I'm going PHP/AJAX from now on.
I am a NET developer. You can use various languages with NET but most people use VB or C# so I'm constantly translating one into the other. The Framework is a lot larger than you may think so I'm still learning new things. In fact, I'm just killing time here while I study aspnet_regsql.exe
I use Visual Basic primarily, because the coding is a lot simpler.
You pretty much just write a sentence with periods instead of spaces to tell the program what to do. The only downside is, it's hard to get Visual Basic to do anything complicated.
The .NET shitwork is for pleasing the lazy devilopers, just don't use it, case solved.

Saying ".NET" is "just a framework" doesn't answer the question dude.

The point of .NET is not to be "Point and Click"..

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Java & .NET are both programing launguages. .NET codes in C# and Java codes in Java.

So is it more like a function library, programming language, or a shell?
sandman85048 4 years ago
It's not a programming language. It isn't really a shell. While it does have many libraries, that doesn't really explain it either.
Think of it like an interpreter for programs, like Java (or like QBasic used to do).
PatHawkscom 4 years ago
.NET is a platform.
Common Language Runtime (CLR) is the interpreter, which will execute your program.
VB and C# are the most common languages, while there are over 30 others like J#, C++ even python.
