This is a legitmate experiment. However, I don't feel this experiment was conducted thoughtfully. We all have an area of personal space we like to maintain. This is a buffer zone and usually 2 to 3 feet of distance between us and those around us. If we know who is close to us then the buffer zone is diminished. Other aspects to consider, that were noticable in the video were the men and women reacted differently. The women noticed the individual following sooner. The men let him follow longer.
@affirming77 Cont. Also, personal space varies across culture. Also, some cultures are more willing to assert themselves. So, pay close attention to how how the people of different ethnicity react. There were some biases to the presentation. It would have been interesting to see how these men and women would react to a female following them. Possibly, the women were more alert in the experiment, because a male was following too closely and this signaled danger. Just saying...but interesting.
I was thinking of a sociology project as more of just breaking norms with doing strange or crazy stuff but not stalking people, people sometimes have a reason to worry the person may be dangerous ... it kinda drifts off from the point but meh
@EMROPRODUCTIONS Its a sociology thing. seeing how people react to you when you break a social norm. Its actaully pretty interesting how everyone had the same type of reaction when confronting the stranger that was following them.... turning and faceing the "threat" and taking one step backwards.... well interesting to me anyways

@WolfOfElement It is more than someone just staring or looking weirdly (or in amusement/admiration perhaps) at someone breaking a social norm, someone who is doing that when sidewalks arent crowded or w/o reason could be trying to do something, it is more of someone thinking you're as you said a threat or could be dangerous, whether its a really dangerous person or some... teen punk trying to pull something. I think its a bit more than just people reacting from someone breaking social norms.
cool! i used to do this when i was young. my friend just rides along w/ me. i always thought how crazy i or we were. lol. i didnt know that its not possible that i wasnt the only one. we follow them behind or besides them too, but eventually we got bored and goes away. maybe when we're in the right mood & we felt like tripping around, we used to do this.there's more that we used to do, while doing it at the same time, but cant remember it anymore (i kind of miss her, but some are not forever).
I am wondering about how close you were to the people and if it was the same distance. It looks in the video that the gap between yourself and the person was larger when it was a woman you were following as apposed the the closness you achieved when it was a male target.
I think coming from a sociology major point of view that there may be a few factors at play here - people don't know if you're going to hurt them or what - I'm not sure this really says anything other than people are uncomfortable with you walking close to them

You guys should interview the people after. Also try walking on the side of them as see how that works out.

people try to act like they dont notice thinking that by asking them about it they would be intruding their buisness and being rude

This was great. I love sociology! Why is it that the most interesting degree to get is the most useless one to have?
