From the banjo and guitar blues to the fishermen on the river, Mali is the origin of the Mississippi Delta culture.
I encourage all Africans-in-America to visit Mendenen (Mali/Senegambia/Guinee etc.) and not as tourist. But as children returning home, bearing the gifts of their experience and seeking the love of their mother.
Just saw this band in Burlington VT and they are bigger and way better now--the POWER of those combined instruments was incredible, like listening to the early Allman Bros.
Are these people seriously into their music or what? Wow! It seems almost magical that that sound can be coaxed out of that little bitty instrument. I have to agree with Rebertone that American music would benefit greatly from the introduction of some traditional African instruments (in addition to the banjo, of course. We already have that much from African music, from the "akonting.")
Xalam has amazing, flexible sound. It can produce music which sound totally root, tribal, natural and while after you hear pure twangy electric guitar sound.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I've said for a while that African-American music should be adapted to traditional African instruments. This is perfect in every way. Someone please tell me where I can buy a xalam [Ngoni?] like his & also where I can purchase a copy of this performance on DVD & CD.
Oh how right you are! I also would like to own such precision instruments and a copy of the DVD & CD as well. I would appreciate any suggetions for me to obtain them? Thanks so much your time
@Rebertone my dad just bought one from one of the guys he plays with while they were on tour. if you ever get the chance to talk to them (in french), ask them about it! they are terrific guys
