Actually tubes are switches, tubes were used before transistors were invented and is why a simple radio was as big as a refrigerator and a simple computer was the size of a building! imagine replicating a modern pc cpu with over 700 million tubes, i think you would need the entire Boeing manufacturing facility building to hold this fantasy device and is a good picture to paint when visualizing how complex cpu's really are!
Many of the ignorant comments here are completely laughable! If you dolts actually knew anything about tubes (valves), you would know that the best audiophile preamplifiers and amplifiers (and integrated amps too) utilize tubes in their design. Tubes provide great musicality, timbral accuracy, euphony, and warmth and detail to well mastered and recorded music. Educate yourselves before you make misinformed and assinine comments next time!
you little goofs dont have a CLUE what you are saying. this is great. get some real audio, being ignorant is NO excuse. its NOT about price or aesthetics.
0:59 - Basically the watts are running through them.... As if "watts" were tiny little magic units passing through tubes and making them glow.. Ah women!!! it's all about the glitter!
Aaarrggghhh! Firstly, I wish that the 'journalists' knew what they were talking about without obviously having to read it. Secondly, considering the price is in GBP, they are valves and thermionic ones at that. Thirdly, she could have switched it on and fourthly, why spend all that money on a wonderful amp and play MP3 through it??!! Yeah, I'm a snob. Bah, humbug...
500lbs. of speaker and 399lbs. of amp. is one "heavy" system! now that I know is a joke, But "TUBES?!?" now that's gotta be some kinda Major fuckin' joke for real. Because Kids today haven't seen tubes before they're going to try to get over on them by using them again. Tubes are old-old technology and should not be pulled out of dusty old bins to scam young folk!
you've been programed to think that, but if you knew a damn thing about audio amplifiers you wouldn't touch tubes for sound reproduction. the only real use for them now is guitar amplifiers, and thats because they arent even close to flat or linear, its just that when you deal with a guitar signal those things can sound good if you control them right, and the fact that tube amps have an extremely high output impedance.
now, speakers only have an impeadance of 2-16 ohms, so to match the outputs correctly you need a transformer, in guitar amps, they're made so that the iorn core of the transformer achieves magnetic saturation at a low level creating essentially a midband filter which takes the sound, which is probably distorting to saturate the core, and rolls the highs and lows off, so you get a warm smooth middle, and, it takes the clipped waveform and smooths the edges off, so it sounds better.
as for hifi stuff, they benefit from any of what makes tubes great for guitar, because you have a whole band getting thrown at it, and the tubes aren't flat or linear, so you end up with an uphill battle and you haven't even made a circuit to support it yet. Then you have to pay a amp tech to bias the tubes if you dont know how, and you have to replace the tubes every couple years, and capacitors every 5-8 so the maintenance cost really kills any benefit you think you might be getting.
jtriffo, you're talking sonsense ! tube amplifiers are the absolute best for hifi sound. I've had already 2 of them and they radically blow away any same price category solid state amp. And about output transformers, when properly dimensioned, they have the immense advantage of tightly controlling transient bass response - far better than any solid state equipment, unless properly designed hence utterly expensive and heavy...

Just because it wouldn't blow our minds away. Youtube has an awful sound quality and on top of that everything is mixed to mono.

not trying to be a smartass, but when she said "pounds" she meant it as in the british currency. Not the weight of the system.
