@viper200691 No, just a clip from the Departed that I inserted as a crude joke. Remember, this was made at a time when the original version was the only version. (As it should've been, imho.)
i have just found out frank morgan is the same name of the actor who played the wizard in the wizard of oz. and sam gets called dorothy by gene. so what does that make gene? the lion?
@playfulpaul1985 Holy shit. I knew about the Frank Morgan connection to the wizard of oz (and, through a mix of charactor and actor names, the Sweeney), but the Lion is a nice connection that I hadn't seen before.
Then again, I'm reminded of the penultimate ep of Ashes to Ashes, where Chris says, "The rat turned into a lion." So could Chris be the lion? Character wise, it would probably fit him more. See, this is why I love both shows: to this day, they still get me thinking!
the central actor there, what was his name? acted as sam tyler? he was EXCELENT as were all other actors in his first big part, a movie called human traffic! about a group of young folk (acting, honestly, and sincerely, really as themselves and what they liked to do at the time) who enjoyed taking E and having a smoke! great peer education, and was part of then successful tho highly ,harm reduction technique in drugs education, rather than the right wing & harmful "just-say-no" campaign.
@gnowave Oh yeah, gotta love Human Traffic! The "Nice one, bruva!" conversation always makes me laugh! Actually, I've loved everything I've seen John Simm in so far. What I really want to see is The Lakes, one of his earliest regular tv roles. I've gotta see that sometime. As well as everything else he's been in, of course!
I saw the US version before the UK version. I knew right away the ending of the series was bullshit. There's no way everyone in the US is gonna enjoy that episode. Planet Mars, my ass.
@someone9906 Watch the original, it's easily one of the greatest tv series ever made. Perfectly written, acted and directed, it's a show I never get tired of watching and, despite my rather crude parody, the ending is my favourite ending to a tv series ever. Well worth tracking down.
@FemaleSexShooter It wasn't so much realism that I watched the show as a perfect combination between fantastic entertainment - fast cars, awesome fights, and Glenister as Hunt was practically perfect in the role with the un-pc dialogue he always churned out - but also it's dark psychological edge as Sam could never decide what was real and what wasn't, a point of view we never left, which I felt the US version lacked. But, like you, I respect other's opinions, too. Oh, and it wasn't a book, btw.
@FemaleSexShooter Personally, I only prefer the UK version for the soundtrack, the acting, the writing, the directing, the ending and the real Gene Hunt to be honest.
Seriously, I've heard the original being described as many things before, but 'boring' wasn't one of them. Well, to each their own.
The us casting was completely wrong... Gene hunt needed to be bigger and more dangerous than Sam yet looked like a frail old man...
It could of been good... especially comparing the similarities of the endings to ashes to ashes and LOST - Lost made me feel cheated whereas Ashes to Ashes made more sense..
@DAVIDBANTING Yeah, Harvey Keitel is awesome but he was way too old to play Gene Hunt, not to mention the ending which was Just Plain STUPID.
And I did love the Ashes to Ashes ending, although I thought it kind of made it too obvious, the reason Life On Mars' ending was so brilliant is because it left it to the viewers to figure it out. But I must admit that the Railroad Arms being heaven and Gene Hunt being an arch-angel is awesome.
@DAVIDBANTING yeh, they tend to take stuff and try to give it some coaine head hollywood. though the US take on "shamelss" was kinda interesting, in the sense of seeing how they would handle it. and well, to be fair it wasnt bad at all.
the English have no tolerance for anything outside of their world view these days. they used to be masters of the known world and imposed their ideals on it but now are merely pawns in the same world. other countries joke about all of them being emasculated and feminised....but they don't know it.
@4400visitor Isn't it down to you to prove it's right given you're the one who made the assertion in the first place?
Every major nation gets mocked according to some stereotype. Britain and America probably get more than their fair share; Britain because of post-colonial countries asserting their independence by denigrating their former colonial masters, and the USA's because of their unilateral forays into other countries armed conflicts and it's insidious, vapid consumer culture.
@4400visitor um, well, u do get some folk like that here. but you tend to have that attitude MORE from americans... hence all the wars they are involved in with people who want a diferent style of governance that isnt an american style of governance....u make CRAP POINT buddy

@DoctorDodge Fair point Police Acton was quiet poor in the 90s I think the 90s where better for Comidies (Blackadder etc) by the way do you know what the name is of the car Gene hunt drives not the Quattro the Ford??
@DoctorDodge hehe, I felt guilty after that post because I thought I came across as quite arrogant, glad you didn't see it that way :)
It's a shame the Sweeney isn't on TV or the internet (that I can find). I'm way too young to have seen it first time around and have only seen a couple of episodes along with the first film :(
@Woozie52 nah, there wasn't anything arrogant about your answer, mate. I should know, as I'm a total geek, and i KNOW how arrogant geeks like me can be! lol
I've yet to see the first film, but the box sets of the series are pretty cheap these days. I got my set for the first series for about £15, and that was a couple of years ago. Easily worth the price, imo.
@Woozie52 I'm pretty sure the Sweeney's on ITV4. I ALWAYS see it when I'm flicking through the channels looking for something to watch, but I always see it from halfway through, so I always go past it. It's usually on the mornings, though. 'Bout 9-ish, but I'm not sure what days.
@Woozie52 Wasn't it a Consul? That thought just popped into my mind so I must have heard it somewhere. Early grannys were consuls weren't they, or am I too stoned to think straight??? Don't fuckin matter, granada, consul, same bloody car anyway
@SteveCardiff Mk1 granadas- low spec ones were called consuls 72-74, 2.0 litre or 2.5 engines, higher spec cars were Granadas. after that they were all Granadas, L, XL, ghia etc. The sweeney car was a consul GT with a 3.0 V6
@DoctorDodge and then there is now, where in the UK we have on for eg channel 5 HOW MANY EPISODES and variatiosn of those naff pretend forensic crime "dramas" with titles that are all abbreviations like crime:NYSTD and the like.. bloody awful mind rot
@a1cEscue ABC actually offered Phillip Glenister the part; I don't remember what his reasons for turning it down were, but I think he had some kind of commitment to another project. Same goes for John Simms, too, while I'm on the subject.
People are giving the American ending of the show a bad rep; the truth behind it is that LoM was always destined to be multiple seasons long. After finding out that the show was being cancelled, the producers no doubt thought up this ending as a final "fuck you" to ABC.
I can say with certainty that the American version would have ended better if it hadn't been cut short; not saying it's better than the BBC original, but it was't the worst show in the world.
I think Jene Hunt had nothing to do with the murder of sam tyler cause he jumped off a buliding and in the us version somebody a body came flying down i think thats the uk version of sam tyler
I think you should make another video of this, only this time the UK Sam Tyler falls right on the US Sam Tyler thus saving him and the rest of us from the whole "landing on mars" crap ending. SPLAT!
Great joke. I have only heard about the US ending and honestly, WTF? I mean come on. The UK version and ending is just amazing - perhaps ABC couldn't imagine ending a series where there were more questions than answers, who knows but literally 'Life on Mars?'. Still your 'version' of the ending did make me laugh
The way the us ended the series was crappy since they tried to add some sort unexpected twisted by deciding to make the title of the show literal, hence undermindin' the analogy that was present in the original version
I bet when most ppl in america who only watched the us version would think that the title was intentional in that mars plays a part in all version as oppose to it bein' an analogy like being sent to the past is like ending up on mars.
It really was a terrible ending on all possible levels, wasn't it? But the original ending is one of the greatest endings ever - there wasn't any way it could've been beaten. Looks like abc didn't even bother trying to outdo it.
Still, on the plus side, at least abc won't remake Ashes to Ashes, either!
@FallenGemini - Don't worry about us Yanks. Very few of us saw more than one or two episodes. Those of us who did went straight to YouTube and got familiar with the UK version as the USA version was happening. Especially during a long break they took... when they finally got to the ending we all thought it was gonna be just like the UK version. We were happy to have it be weird and totally "out of left field". That white shoe on the Martian soil was funny... and cool. We enjoyed our failed show
@FallenGemini I'm an American but a HUGE fan of the British life on mars and ashes to ashes, and I got a bunch of my friends into it too, Gene Hunt is awesome! I never bothered to watch the American version though like thanks to downloading and dvds and the BBC its not required to Americanise British tv shows, the Americans who like British tv shows are smart enough that we don't need some half assed recycled dumbed down version of something. Anywho, check out my Gene Hunt video!
@imneatneatneat I agree with ya, Gene Hunt is not only a legend, he's literally iconic, as far as Britain is concerned. Unfortunatly, too many American tv companies automatically assume that the viewing audience is so thick, they won't understand a decent story unless it's got American accents. I think the worst example I can think of is the failed US Spaced pilot. It still amazes me how ANYONE thought remaking Spaced - 14 episodes of sitcom perfection - was a good idea!
@imneatneatneat I agree. I see a lot of Americans getting offended when we tell them American remakes of British shows/movies tend to suck; the thing is, though, the opposite is true too, because remakes in general tend to leave out some of the magic that makes the originals so damn interesting.
It's a big pity that our best shows get remade... British TV usually sucks, so having our few gems bastardised hurts.
@imneatneatneat as i have seen there are 2 US versions of the show, 1st shows colm meaney as hunt, the 2nd has harvey kietel as hunt... whats that about?
LOL!! I loved the UK show. Loved it loved it loved it. Dark, unnerving, serious and utterly hilarious. Couldn't bear to watch the US version. Why do we yanks feel so compelled to produce underwhelming remakes of perfectly cool shows? This vid was pretty funny though :)
There'll never be better proof that the UK version is so much better than the US than someone who's Japanese saying it's better! You guys do make the best comics/films/tv series, after all!
LoL That way how some British say Mars sounds like "Maas" and in Finnish language "Maa" is Earth XD and "Maas" kinda means "on earth" :D sounds crazy but that's the way it is and it's just a coincidence ..I guess. Btw Finnish say mars like maRRs or something :D with more stronger R. because if they wouldn't, it would sound like "on earth" not "mars" XD when that guy says "is there a life on mars" i'm like "yeah there is life on earth" :D you get it?
Is everyone that hates the US version British? I don't mean that in a negative way. I am just curious. I have only seen the US version and loved it from beginning to end
Well if you saw the British version you would know that not only is the ending better, but the show is head and shoulders above the US version. Harvey Keitel is just awful as Hunt, Phil Glenister is the only Gene Genie!! The US version is an embarrassment really. And yes i am American
If you like the US version, then give yourself a treat and watch the English one, you'll be blown away.
If I'd only seen the US one, I'd have liked it too. But the UK one is far more intense... everything (bar one episode) is from Sam's point of view, and it's far darker and more confusing. You really do consider very strongly throughout the possibility that Sam is mad, in a coma, dead and in hell/purgatory... you never feel at all comfortable or safe.
Nope. I'm from Canada. I tried to watch the US version, but compare to the UK one it was so bad I didn't manage to watch it further than the opening credits.... :P
Ive only seen the US version but I agree the ending was shit, they try to explain the plot behind the entire show in less than 5 minutes ...and epically failed. Oh and the wig they put on Anne was really creeping me out lol
well, apparently the writers have said that there's gonna be an explanation for both life on mars and ashes to ashes next series. not sure how i feel about that. i like the ambiguous ending, and if it's given some further clarity, well, it has the risk of having an ending as lame as the US one. which still sucked balls just for the "clever" idea of gene hunt revealed to be "Major Tom". in the words of harvey kietel: "Hardy fucking har"
I only knew the US show and never saw fhe final til just now - so I watched the original final thinking it would be the same - What happened?? I like the original - why did they change it????
They made him a generation older than Sam, a veteran of WWII, have a disfunctional relationship with his daughter (who Sam had lots of sex with which just makes you wonder a little bit more about Sam) and then revealed in the end that none of it was the least bit real in any way, so no character growth counted, and Sam's growth turned out to be to stop resenting his father and to start looking for ways to get Annie to be his girlfriend.
this is one of the best shows of all time

@thebritish25 It's either a Cortina or a Grenada: i always get the two brown cars used in Life on Mars and the Sweeney mixed up!

@Woozie52 Cheers. Although I'm pretty sure I'm going to forget again sometime soon! :D
DoctorDodge 1 year ago
@DoctorDodge hehe, I felt guilty after that post because I thought I came across as quite arrogant, glad you didn't see it that way :)
It's a shame the Sweeney isn't on TV or the internet (that I can find). I'm way too young to have seen it first time around and have only seen a couple of episodes along with the first film :(
Woozie52 1 year ago
@Woozie52 nah, there wasn't anything arrogant about your answer, mate. I should know, as I'm a total geek, and i KNOW how arrogant geeks like me can be! lol
I've yet to see the first film, but the box sets of the series are pretty cheap these days. I got my set for the first series for about £15, and that was a couple of years ago. Easily worth the price, imo.
DoctorDodge 1 year ago
@Woozie52 I'm pretty sure the Sweeney's on ITV4. I ALWAYS see it when I'm flicking through the channels looking for something to watch, but I always see it from halfway through, so I always go past it. It's usually on the mornings, though. 'Bout 9-ish, but I'm not sure what days.
2757vinnie 1 year ago
@2757vinnie Yeah I have seen it there occasionally but I always miss most of it.
Shame you can't watch it on the ITV player.
Thanks anyway

@Woozie52 Wasn't it a Consul? That thought just popped into my mind so I must have heard it somewhere. Early grannys were consuls weren't they, or am I too stoned to think straight??? Don't fuckin matter, granada, consul, same bloody car anyway
SteveCardiff 1 year ago
@SteveCardiff No idea - the only reason I know those cars is 'coz I watch LoM and The Sweeney, otherwise I'm useless.
Woozie52 1 year ago
@SteveCardiff Mk1 granadas- low spec ones were called consuls 72-74, 2.0 litre or 2.5 engines, higher spec cars were Granadas. after that they were all Granadas, L, XL, ghia etc. The sweeney car was a consul GT with a 3.0 V6

@a1cEscue ABC actually offered Phillip Glenister the part; I don't remember what his reasons for turning it down were, but I think he had some kind of commitment to another project. Same goes for John Simms, too, while I'm on the subject.
SkullXII 1 year ago
People are giving the American ending of the show a bad rep; the truth behind it is that LoM was always destined to be multiple seasons long. After finding out that the show was being cancelled, the producers no doubt thought up this ending as a final "fuck you" to ABC.
I can say with certainty that the American version would have ended better if it hadn't been cut short; not saying it's better than the BBC original, but it was't the worst show in the world.

FallenGemini 1 year ago 16
It really was a terrible ending on all possible levels, wasn't it? But the original ending is one of the greatest endings ever - there wasn't any way it could've been beaten. Looks like abc didn't even bother trying to outdo it.
Still, on the plus side, at least abc won't remake Ashes to Ashes, either!
DoctorDodge 1 year ago 8
It is quite awful and because I am american, I seen the endin when it first airred
I think no matter what different ending the US ver went with, ppl would not like it.
FallenGemini 1 year ago
@FallenGemini - Don't worry about us Yanks. Very few of us saw more than one or two episodes. Those of us who did went straight to YouTube and got familiar with the UK version as the USA version was happening. Especially during a long break they took... when they finally got to the ending we all thought it was gonna be just like the UK version. We were happy to have it be weird and totally "out of left field". That white shoe on the Martian soil was funny... and cool. We enjoyed our failed show
Corporations8MyBaby 1 year ago
@FallenGemini I do admit the us ending was crao because the show got cancelled and they had to come up with that stupid ending
broxi391 1 year ago
@broxi391 The thing is that the space ending was planned all along
Just that if the show wasn't cancelled, the ending wouldn't be rushed but will still be about astronauts trying to find DNA on the red planet

@FallenGemini After reading to your comment about the US ending i decided to watch it... it disgusted me like i have never been disgusted before.
SirJakester16 1 year ago
@FallenGemini I'm an American but a HUGE fan of the British life on mars and ashes to ashes, and I got a bunch of my friends into it too, Gene Hunt is awesome! I never bothered to watch the American version though like thanks to downloading and dvds and the BBC its not required to Americanise British tv shows, the Americans who like British tv shows are smart enough that we don't need some half assed recycled dumbed down version of something. Anywho, check out my Gene Hunt video!
imneatneatneat 1 year ago 26
@imneatneatneat I agree with ya, Gene Hunt is not only a legend, he's literally iconic, as far as Britain is concerned. Unfortunatly, too many American tv companies automatically assume that the viewing audience is so thick, they won't understand a decent story unless it's got American accents. I think the worst example I can think of is the failed US Spaced pilot. It still amazes me how ANYONE thought remaking Spaced - 14 episodes of sitcom perfection - was a good idea!
DoctorDodge 1 year ago
@imneatneatneat I agree. I see a lot of Americans getting offended when we tell them American remakes of British shows/movies tend to suck; the thing is, though, the opposite is true too, because remakes in general tend to leave out some of the magic that makes the originals so damn interesting.
It's a big pity that our best shows get remade... British TV usually sucks, so having our few gems bastardised hurts.
SkullXII 1 year ago
@imneatneatneat as i have seen there are 2 US versions of the show, 1st shows colm meaney as hunt, the 2nd has harvey kietel as hunt... whats that about?

LoL That way how some British say Mars sounds like "Maas" and in Finnish language "Maa" is Earth XD and "Maas" kinda means "on earth" :D sounds crazy but that's the way it is and it's just a coincidence ..I guess. Btw Finnish say mars like maRRs or something :D with more stronger R. because if they wouldn't, it would sound like "on earth" not "mars" XD when that guy says "is there a life on mars" i'm like "yeah there is life on earth" :D you get it?

QuiteTheBadWulf 2 years ago 2
Well if you saw the British version you would know that not only is the ending better, but the show is head and shoulders above the US version. Harvey Keitel is just awful as Hunt, Phil Glenister is the only Gene Genie!! The US version is an embarrassment really. And yes i am American
RJHuffman 1 year ago 11
If you like the US version, then give yourself a treat and watch the English one, you'll be blown away.
If I'd only seen the US one, I'd have liked it too. But the UK one is far more intense... everything (bar one episode) is from Sam's point of view, and it's far darker and more confusing. You really do consider very strongly throughout the possibility that Sam is mad, in a coma, dead and in hell/purgatory... you never feel at all comfortable or safe.
whovianfloovian 1 year ago 4
Nope. I'm from Canada. I tried to watch the US version, but compare to the UK one it was so bad I didn't manage to watch it further than the opening credits.... :P

JOHN SIMMS IS THE BEST! I love the UK ending! Let it be.x
lovebug969 2 years ago 4
does anyone really know what the hell happened?
a)Tyler imagined all this in his coma enduced state, and him being in a coma that long caused his pain reactions to die. then commited suicide.
b)He actually somehow went back in time somehow.
c)he actually lived in the past, and thought he was from the future, due to his 'concussion'
d)Aliens did it =S
or e) something else entirely.
i know the point is were menna think about it, but each explanation wont work for one reason or another.
shanustheanus 2 years ago
well, apparently the writers have said that there's gonna be an explanation for both life on mars and ashes to ashes next series. not sure how i feel about that. i like the ambiguous ending, and if it's given some further clarity, well, it has the risk of having an ending as lame as the US one. which still sucked balls just for the "clever" idea of gene hunt revealed to be "Major Tom". in the words of harvey kietel: "Hardy fucking har"

@THERESASIMIONE
