So yes they make most of their money from playing live and videos but they have to get to that level first. By all means download a track here and there for free but if you enjoy the band. PAY FOR IT
Ok think about it. Travelling to performances, venues, food, crew, engineers etc.. all cost money. Venues wont book bands that aren't established. Music Big whigs pay for the advertising, merchandise, and do the good sell to the venues for up and coming artists. If the big companies dont make money who exactly is going to pay in advance for all of this stuff.

You see, I produced music for indie labels for 14 years, until I had to close my studio due to small labels being unable to give advances any more with their already small profits gone due to illegal downloading.
I could have produced some commercial crap just to keep afloat, but I didn't want to add to the problem that illegal downloading has created (destroying choice as only major labels can function, thus proliferating lagy gagas)...so I gave up my 'job' and now am retraining to do something different. Sad (for me) but there you go, such is life....so, as I'd said:

This band makes plenty of money despite piracy, its complete bullshit that pirating stops independent artists from emerging, it just takes some of the profit from the most vampyric end of the industry. Money, as every single study has shown without fail, is not conducive to creativity.

Andy Warhol is NOT AN ARTIST then? Because, as I'm sure you know, Andy Warhol had a workshop filled with unknown artists...a 'production line' if you will, with him in an executive role to maximise his ARTISTIC output for MONEY. According to you though, he wasn't an artist, because "every single study has shown that money is not conducive to creativity". Idiot.

@solheights Unsubstantiated? There have been many studies (google is your friend) into the motivational effects of money in any creative industry. The conclusion is always that not only does money not provide incentive, it actually functions counter to the creative process when the creator knows that it is a finality. Go read. And yes I know the industry, I have many friends involved in the recording, production and performance of music, including those directly related to this band.

@solheights Whether Andy Warhol was an artist at some point is irrelevant, filling a workshop full of labourers is not an artistic process, and the music industry is utterly, utterly different. So carry on making those assumptions about me, it will only make you look increasingly naive. Anti-reality? That's cute. Of course any artist needs to eat, but your extreme examples aren't sensitive to the reality, you can make money from it all, and piracy is just an expression of the unfairness imposed.

@solheights He covers many of the major studies in a very good talk, so for further detail you can make your own damn effort to find this stuff out once he lists the studies, its all out there. So don't go calling me a child, considering my argument is the only one that is substantiated, and the best you can achieve is inflammatory hot air. @solheights actually maybe it will become about the music again and not just maken money, also i doubt any emerging artist sees money from record sales, every new artist gets raped by the companies and make a majority of their money from doing shows and selling merchandise so get educated and why dont we cut them out and share good music ourselves and maybe get rid of the hannah montanas' along the way

Another point is that stifling new music has the opposite effect you may desire. It creates more Lagy Gagas due to mass populist music being the only business model that can survive piracy.
