Had I known then what I know today, I don’t believe I would have permitted, or participated in, the circumcision. It also has occurred to me that we all took a risk allowing my unprofessional hands to execute this task. Fortunately, my son was and is fine, and has a good sex life (as far as I know).

to even suggest that male and female circumcision are remotely alike goes way beyond stupidity. A Male circumcision is comparable with a appendectomy. While tecnically a mutilation, if done for medical reasons it has it's purpose. And if someone really has abandonment issues because of a missing foreskin, he should probably see a shrink. FGM on the other hand changes a girls life. Leaving out the complications and long term issues, the traume alone is enough to last more than a lifetime.

The reality is that just as removing the clitoris or parts thereof, male circumcisions are, also, removing part of the penis. It serves multiple purposes. Removing the foreskin can remove most of the nerve endings that bring sexual pleasure. Western circumcision is less sever than less tribal circumcision which can include splaying which is splitting the penis down its length. Varying amounts of skinning of the penis have been part of male circumcision. Mutilating genitals? NO!

Had I known then what I know today, I don’t believe I would have permitted, or participated in, the circumcision. It also has occurred to me that we all took a risk allowing my unprofessional hands to execute this task. Fortunately, my son was and is fine, and has a good sex life (as far as I know).
