While everyone in my high school liked listening to techno and shit, me, a 15 year old girl starting bobbing my head to this song on the radio as everyone was staring at me. xD This song is the fucking shit!! I love Paul McCartney! 20th century music FTW.
LYRICS Someone's knockin' at the door. Somebody's ringin' the bell. Someone's knockin' at the door. Somebody's ririgin' the bell. Do me a favor, Open the door and let 'em in. Sister suzie, brother john, Martin luther, phil and don, Brother michael, auntie gin, Open the door and let 'em in. Someone's knockin' at the door. Somebody's ringin' the bell. Someone's knockin' at the door. Somebody's ringin' the bell. Do me a favor, Open the door and let 'em in
McCartney knew exactly how to wow the American audiences, adding a classic military march complete with piccolo on a single that was released on Americas Bicentennial in 1976.
About 10 minutes ago,I was sitting at my computer when i heard the doorbell ring. I rushed to the door and found no one outside. I then saw a guy dropping someone off at the house next to me. His radio was cranking out this song. I heard the piano begin and slowly fade off as he drove away. Blew my mind. I needed to finish the song:)
My Nana used to sing this to my brother and I when were little kids..We used to come visit her from Canada and we used to fight when we got there who would ring the bell and she would anser..I miss her..Wish she was still here to "open the door":(
Makes you think of the early 70's. RC Cola, Pizza Hut and El Fenix. New hippies with no cause. Tricky Dick, Rumsfeld and Chiney. 16% home loans, Intel hand held football and Atari. Joe Namith had sexy legs and used Noxima because it creamed your face"like a razor wont". Someone got stoned and crashed Lynards Plane. Everyone smoked and mined thier own business.
I was a kid in the late 70s & I remember this being on the radio a lot & it always put a smile on my Mother's face, all songs by Paul, John & of course the Beatles did, great memories, so glad she got me into they're music.
I loved this song the first time I heard it, wayyy back in 1980 or so. I can't be sure because I was so young (about 4). I only heard it on the radio a few times afterward. But then I re-found the Beatles in the late 90's when I had a job and began to have money to buy things. This was one of the songs I realized I'd been looking for for years, along with "Across the Universe", before I ever knew who the Beatles were.

this song gives me goose bumps when i remember my life as a teenager. early summer mornings not a care in the world i would grab my g&s skateboard head out the door and loose my self in the beauty of the day. just hang out until the stars came out throu out the day i would hear this song what a great feeling when i look back. summers will never be the same. thanks paul for the memories
@KrisGarwood i fully agree. Paul must be the most creative song-witer in the world. There are some bands whose style is easy to recognize and is boring after a time.
@00Sulpher music is subjective my friend. no this is not the best song ever, but this song for me brings back great memories of my mom and dad when I was a kid. We would all sing it in the car together..I couldn't have been more than 5-6 years old. That feeling, might not be boner worthy but it invokes a feeling of happiness.
this was one of the main songs me Bobby Nordstrom and his mom (driving) listened to on the radio from state to state in the summer of '76 as we did our 'Civil War vacation' from Chicago to Atlanta, GA
i just relized that the beatles are still wearing their suits and their perfectly fine even though they should have scuba gear to move easly but it shows the power of the beatles over comes laws of physics :)

@CYCOfilms As I recall this was a big hit ...one of Pauls first as a solo and he still does it live. It's easy to think a song is "short on ideas" after it is written. 20/20 hindsight isn't worth much. I would be glad to be this "short on ideas".
The magic of writing a song is to make it sound like it was easy to write and play. Then everyone can relate to it...not just musicians and composers But then again...before it was written...there was no "it"...just dead empty air.
@CYCOfilms That being said....I hear ya...though it did kinda grow on me after awhile. I like how he runs through his memories...saying "let em in". It's a song about looking for inspiration for a song...from your influences...which is pretty clever and seems to have worked. "Phil and Don" are the Everly Bros. of which the Beatles said they were highly influenced by.
I DON'T WRITE ON THESE THINGS VERY OFTEN. THE REASON IS, AFTER I READ ALL THE REMARKS- I GET TURNED OFF. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SONG- KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. IT BRINGS BACK FOND MEMORIES FOR ME AS A CHILD- IF IT DOESN'T FOR YOU- WELL TOO BAD. IS IT THE BEST SONG IN THE WORLD? I DON'T KNOW- IS IT? MAYBE? MAYBE NOT- WHO GIVES A CRAP- YOU EITHER LIKE IT OR YOU DON'T. MOM DIDN'T HANG YOUR PICS ON THE FRIG? SEE A DOCTOR- GROW UP AND FUCK OFF. OPPS SORRY DID I OFFEND? FUCK OFF YA WANKER! U SUCK!
The Phill and Don bits are referring to The Everley Brothers, and the Phill and Don parts are the only lyrics sung with 2 people at the same time which is a homage to The Everley Brothers who are known for their close harmony singing. Just some random trivia that I read in a magazine (:
I remember being at summer camp and this song was one of the songs of that summer. Every time I hear this and ANY Wings for that matter, I think back to those camp days, summers, swimming, hiking, archery and all those things you did at a summer camp. I listen to this and I can smell the grass, the smoke from the hot dog fires and feel that “lounge around” summer heat. The nostalgia almost makes me cry with joy it’s so real. The power of music indeed! :)
@Johnnywhamo Awesome that you should comment on this as i always relate this song to my summers on Wasaga Beach during the 70's this one and 10cc's Not in love
@LEEKYLE99 that's one of songs for me as well Leek, you have great taste in music lol! Wasaga Beach, I spent a lot of teenage long weekends there as well as Sauble beach, good times!!!!
@Johnnywhamo It does the same thing to me with the summer of 75 bike ride 120 miles from our home to camp for 2 weeks at 14 years old(lake barriessa). Meeting girls our age. Boating with a friend we seen there. Great nostalgia like you said. Peace
@Johnnywhamo That's a very beautiful recollection. Yes, music has that incredible power to transport one back to a very special time in life. This song takes me back to the summer of 1976 and being a teenager again.
first time i heard this song me and my friend laughed so hard we cried!!!!!!!!!!!!

bell intro.
I thought it was some kind of store alert - to let the counter person know if

But then I hear that voice and I know it's a new song by Paul McCartney.
There was a radio playing in the store!
What timing!

The magic of writing a song is to make it sound like it was easy to write and play. Then everyone can relate to it...not just musicians and composers But then again...before it was written...there was no "it"...just dead empty air.

@Fireye69 I guess that makes sense, though this will never be one of MY favorites.

U SUCK!

@ironman77725 If you are referring to the solo in the song, it is actually a trombone. :) Stoned, huh?

If you don't miss those times you're just....strange. Such simpler and better (especially the music) times compared to today.

Such a great song. It almost makes me feel as if I'm drunk on the couch...
