  • martin guitars have the best necks on earth

  • maybe the roland cube is not the perfect match, I think we would have been better off with either no amp, or a good acoustic amp. at least my electro-acoustic just doesn't sound right with my solid state electric amp. otherwise I like the guitar very much, thanks for the review.

  • Hi i have a question. does an electric acoustic guitar work if the battery is empty? like the playing will it work? I know the tuner won't work anymore but the guitar itself with chords and stuff will that still work or become really weak? or is the battery strictly for amping your guitar up to something? thank you.

  • @Hollywoodgirl1010 usually these guitars have active pickups, therefore they need the battery to work. not sure about this particular one, but very likely this is the case here too. batteries can do several hours of playing, but usually you have to unplug the guitar to turn them off (some can be switched off on the panel) otherwise they discharge the battery overnight.

  • I got one recently- I took some mahogony stain and put a nice stain on it. martin did not finish these guitars very well but you can do it yourself.

    otherwise a very nice guitar.

  • @nootaramus how difficult was the entire process?

  • should i get this or a electric guitar i just play at home thanks

  • Got a quote today of 400euros for that job, A bit too pricey for me.If I had of added that to my original budget I'd have bought a better guitar.Cheers for the advice though.

  • I bought this model 3 months ago and love the sound. It really does sound great. The only critisism I'd make is the satin finish. The top corner is now "polished" where my arm goes over the guitar and it looks like it is a little grubby. They should have given it a more hardwearing finish.I love it all the same.

  • You could buff the entire guitar at a pro shop to make it all shiny.

  • @pauldec75 ya it does dirty up a little easily.

  • I'm not trying to impress anyone with this crap. This is like a guy walks in to a shop and there's no pretensions whatsoever. The guitar is basically heard as an acoustic but we amplified just for the sake of it. That was the amp that was there. You want a staged performance for free. Sorry.

  • OMG! will you actually strum this guitar! Not to mention, dude why....a Roland Cube?

  • @randommiker cause cubes are awesome

  • @windmilldwellers not on a Martin guitar bro. To respect and clarify on the guitars tone it justified more by mic-ing it up, thats all i was implying ha. I do not think any guitar should be plugged into a amp even a acoustic amp....let alone a Roland. Roland is pass tense now. Roland was....awesome. Their Technology in electric and acoustic guitars have been beat for a few years now. Boss is one example with Roland and COSM. Roland still does GREAT in anything outside of strings. ;)

  • OMG! will actually strum this guitar!

  • I love Martin OM models. The only problem I have is that it seems their quality control is lacking these days. It seems that now, to get a great built guitar by them - you gotta spend over $2000. Gibsons I feel are the same way. Only the vintage Martins and Gibsons to me, are great value. I have a Taylor and love it. Plan on getting a Martin soon though, probably and OM-28 or something around there.

  • i would take a martin over gibson any day...

  • Cons: Because there is no finish on the front, the oil from your arm, where it rests on the guitar soaks into the wood & darkens it. I did not notice it until it was too late. So, you have to wear long sleeves. The neck is too wide for those of us with short fingers. The fretboard is soaking up the oil from fingers & I wash my hands b4 playing. If I was to do it over again, I would spend another $500.00, not because this guitar isn't worth every dollar, but I'm ready for something better.

  • You see, a good solid opinion about a product and not all thumbs up but more good than bad I think. We can learn from each other and make itelligent decisions when it comes to investing in an instrument. People who have a guitar and are very serious don't want to hear truths or opinions that might differ from their own causing fear that they may have been kidding themselves about their instrument's quality. Too bad, live and learn.

  • The guitar is kept in a room with temp @72% & humidity @ 48-52%. I can go days w/o playin, come back & find it in tune, or only needin minor adj & I have it tuned all the way down to C, due to my vocal range. I have not bought an amp, so no comments available on preamp. Great action for the price.

  • I've owned this guitar since Jan2010. Let me tell you 1st the Pros: It sounds better & louder every month. If you learned how to play on a cheap guitar, like I did, you'll love how all you have to do is lay your fingers on the strings to get a true sounding chord.

The tuner in the preamp is accurate. I took it to a shop 4a adj. & they had a $250 tuner that found it in tune after I tuned it with the built in tuner. The guitar holds a tune in a stable environment & the machine heads are excellent

  • Will plugging an acoustic-electric through an electric amp or an effects pedal work? will i still get a good tone?

  • @united016

You can, but it won't be very acoustic.

  • i wonder why you use a thumb pick. with what you're playing it has no use.

  • Occasionally I play lines like a flat picker and I can go back and forth between the styles. I like the sound of the thumb pick with certain guitars as well.

  • @johnhguitar What kind of thumb pick are you using?

  • Herco thumbpicks. They're the same shape as a regular pick. I like the heavy gauge because it stays on your thumb better. I use it when I'm playing a telecaster or a nylon string guitar as well.

    Thanks

  • @dbfydtn maybe he just likes using the thumb pick more than using a flatpick

  • i dont know if you own this guitar.. but i cant choose between this and the takamine ef341sc... what would be your verdict?

  • the 1 in the OMC-1E serial number stands for the ornamentaion or series styling of the guitar.

  • Thanks a bunch, John for all of your reviews, they're great and really helpful!

Much appreciated. I'm thinking of buying a Martin OM-1. Nice guitar for the price point! Take care.

  • wow my guitar collection behind ya... strat martin, les, tele, but no sg....

    good taste!

  • Hey John, thanks for the review. I own this model and it really is a great sounding and playing instrument for the price. Martin did well with this one.

  • Hello, you said the side and back are solid Mahogany, but according to the description on this guitar is Sapele. Please clarify.

  • I just took the guitar off the wall and played it. I didn't read anything about it. If I'm wrong sorry my fault. Still is a nice guitar however.

  • @1mom2james Sapele is African mahogany ;)

  • Hi John is the roland cube 30 that you use is it the electric guitar amp that you review a while back or is different one.

I have the roland cube for a Les paul copy and was wondering if it is possiable to use with a acoustic-electric without buying another amp.

    Thanks in advance

    Rhys

  • I had a taylor 214ce. Hated it. neck too narrow. Also only that ONE sound. Only 1/16 inch wider but made the diff. Martin sounded better and the thin body was much more comfortable to play

  • just bought mine today and im soooo happy, i have been working hard for a month to buy it, and it was worth every minute :)

  • Wow...you suck. This guy can't pick for shit.

  • Yeah? But good enough to earn a living at it. What do you do for work?

  • @johnhguitar

Ignore the troll, you are better than I will ever be :P

  • @johnhguitar Ha!

  • @Hypnotyze wow are you living in this planet. this guy kicks ass at picking. i think he would own u any day.

  • sounds great, what seting are you using on the Roland cube?

  • @wehappyfewmusic Bass at 4 Mid and Treble at 6 in the clean channel.

  • Just bought one last week.... Love it !!....played a lot of Takamines and Taylors.. This baby suited all my needs for tone, loudness and price.

  • @ThatWayneGuy2007 Wayne, what is the clearance from the bottom of the low E string to the top of the 12th fret on your guitar? I bought this guitar about 3 months ago and it seems that the clearance is increasing all the way up the neck. I keep it in a room with a controlled environment of 72 degrees & humidity at 50 %. Trying to bar chords on the 5th fret is almost impossible and forget going any higher. Appreciate a response. Thanks, Ken

  • @UtzChips2009 Take it to a pro to have it set up. Sooner or later all guitars have to be set up.

  • @johnhguitar Sorry, What does setting up a guitar mean? I just started playing guitar.

  • Having the distance between the neck and the strings adjusted. You can have the strings lowered so the guitar is easier to play especially bar chords. The danger of going too low is that the guitar will buzz. You must have an expert do it.

  • @johnhguitar I had a guitar for about 3 years, and I never set it up, should I take it to a music store? I bought it online and it seemed fine.

  • Mercado Livre. Vendedor do Violão Martin OMC-1E - R$ 4.499,00.

    Rodrigo (Americana-SP) - fone: (19) 97536034

  • @rodrigoemke : Olhe o video onde vim parar... Não deixe seu tel pela web aí assim!

  • Vendedor do Mercado Livre. Violão Martin OMC-1E - R$ 4.499,00.

    Rodrigo (Americana-SP) - fone: (19) 97536034

  • That's my guitar :)

  • I've owned this guitar for only 3 months and already the oil from fingers have begun to get embedded in the fretboard in areas.

  • Notch fiter is for feedback elimination AFAIK.

  • i have the dread model...i did a side by side with about 8 other guitars...it was the closest to the hd-28 that i could find...sounded exact to my ear...at half the price...sounded much better to me than similarly priced taylors and guilds and everything else wasnt even close...it gets dirty looking fast, and very hard to clean cuz the satin finish...but the sound is there....that Martin sound is there completely. Buy this guitar.

  • nice playing! respect! :)

I have a Martin OMC-15E, feeding through a Fishman Aura unit which puts back the acoustics that the pickup misses. I like to add a bit of flange and reverb too. please have a listen to 'Haze' my latest instrumental. Martins are great! :)

  • shredding on an acoustic doesn't give you a good idea of the sound..., just sounds like a mess of clicks. How about some finger/flat picking?!?!?

  • is this kind of like the 000CX1e?

  • I don't think so, I believe the 000CX1 has HPL back and sides, this one has solid sapele back and sides and also has a wider neck.

  • is this a good guitar?

  • I have no idea. I have yet to try this one out.

It's similar to the Taylor 314CE I think (also solid sitka/sapele, electronics and a cutaway).

  • Yes but $400.00 les than the 314ce with better sound.(In my opinion) I played both and bought the OMC-1e.

  • It's indeed cheaper, I'm gonna see (listen) for myself how these go against each other. Can you tell me what you found to be the most apparent difference between these two guitars?

  • Comment removed

  • Here is MY observation from having them side by side:

The neck on the OMC-1e is stratabond where the Taylor had a traditional neck.

The finish on OMC-1e is all satin. Taylor is high gloss on top satin back and sides.

My HIGH GLOSS Alvarez shows pick scratches more than a satin finish!!

I feel that I got more adjustment in the OMC-1e electronics + it has a built in tuner.

2 me the tone from the Martin was more crisp and clean=superior.

I thought the Taylor played a little smoother.

  • i recently got this guitar and its beautiful .. the action on my guitar is low through out the whole neck which makes the actual playing really smoooth .. and the sound is amazing acoustic or plugged in .. worth buying! :)

  • what style of playing u were doin in this video?

    spanish?

    u were play really good

  • Just open tuning with no particular style.

  • quick question. what song were u playing in the openning of the video. or were u just playing what came to mind.either or u are seriously talented!

  • and i thought my acoustic was cool its a piece of shit compared to that.how did u get ur guitar to sound like that. i tunes in in drop D and it still does not sound the same at all. i even tryed pluging i into my amp and still nothing

  • I hear I though it sounded so so because of the mic we were using. Thanks for the comment.

  • The back and sides are Sapele not Mahogany but they look similar.

  • OH I'll check that out. Thanks for the heads up.

  • I believe sapele is a type of mahogany.

  • I just did some research and sapele is in the mahogany family.

Definition of "family" is "group with something in common: a group whose members are related in origin, characteristics, or occupation."

  • John: ¿What do you think about the "accion" (high or low) in this guitar?

    Thank for you review.

  • Most mahogony guitars sit in the midrange with some pretty goods highs. A rosewood guitar has more range but these guitars have their own sound that's good for lots of stuff. THANKS!

  • Referring to your question in the vid: I heard in another video at the Frankfurt Musikmesse, that the notch would eleminate feedback-problems at loud playing-situations. I dont know wether thats true... they said so.

  • You always seem to have to adjust the level in order to be heard in the different rooms you play in. If the notch filter can do it instantly that's great. But, usually it takes a bit more than just that. You don't want to sacrifice tone just to prevent feedback. Get the sound of the guitar set the way you like it and turn it up as loud as you can if that's what you need to do. I find the notch can screw with the balanced tone a bit too much adding midrange. Thanks for your interest..

  • Played that little Guiter, fall in love with this little Guitar. It's sounds great for an OM the Electrnic is doing a good job, so that I don't need to replace it. With a little luck next month she is mine, my little precious. ;)

P.S:: I played it with a Fishman Loudbox, and it sounds great. Maybe better than the Roland Box?

  • Do you know if there is a model with taller frets? (no matter what company)

  • You do the research. Every company can make a guitar with bigger frets if you want to order it...

  • sounds sharp, warm, bright, but has alot of background noise/fret noise, but a good guitar I'm sure.

  • brand new strings perhaps?

  • i was told the notch, carves out/gets rid of certain frequencies that are feeding back, so you turn it until the feedback stops while retaining your basic tone.

  • hey man, great review. lots of helpful information. martins are amazingly beautiful guitars.

  • HA.

  • same amp as me :P

  • unless I'm mistaken the neck is made from Stratabond a plywood type wood used for strength and cost and the inlay on this is pretty standard on Martin darkender000

nice post John and thank you for all the post you put up for us

    Paul

  • Yes you are right, my DX1K has a stratabond neck, it's stronger than wood. The inlays are pretty standard.

  • wow those are weird inlays

  • Yeah, they're ugly.. I like the way Alvarez does it. No inlays until the 12th fret.

  • i love the way alvarez necks feel too

  • Yes, Alvarez my favorite company for guitar, no doubt.

  • i kick myself all the time because i used to have one of the very few solid body electrics they made...the "scoop"...was a badass guitar..but i was a beginner and didn't really know what i had, but to be fair i traded it for an ibanez so it's not all bad lol ...i wish i could find a couple of those scoops

  • I had never heard of it until just now, that is awesome. not for you, though, lol.

  • yeah for real, then again i kick myself because i've sold lots of cool guitars, alvarez electric, alvarez 12 string jumbo, alvarez acoustic i was in love with lol...jackson rhoads, dxmg...ahh the list goes on

  • Looks great! I'll be looking into acoustics in the near future. =] and martin's are on the top of my list.

  • do you have tabs for the beginning? it's very peaceful

  • The Notch control is for phasing out a feedback freq. when playing in with an amp....cuz of the sound whole to get rid of the feedback - kinda like a like a phase button - but some use it for a lil more EQ control

  • Yeah....Good to know and thanks for the tip/knowledge....John

  • Would you recommend me getting a Gibson sg standard or the Gibson sg 61 reissue?

  • The best thing would be to try them both out and see for yourself which one you like the most.
