Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5 first,to sample with 'Superrappin'. Thats 1979, and EPMD is 1987. But you can argue that EPMD did it better with the sample, bringing the deep funk back in to it. Flash use of the sample is kinda vague and trebley, considering the sound of the original. But funky never the less.

At 4:28 that horn riff - very similar to a riff in Donald Byrd's - Change (Makes You Wanna Hustle). Except Byrd uses synth strings instead of a horn section. I assume Byrd probably copied Thomas and not the other way around.
