OMG this is great! This was one of Buster's favorite films. The 'blank pan' as he called it, is on full display here. Love the little kick to his opponent. Isn't he gorgeous here, and so wonderfully clueless? Love ya, Buster. I hope you're jumping over everything in heaven. And 'mascotofageneration', you're never too young to like this- I discovered Buster when I was in college and have LOVED him ever since. Thanks for posting!!
@suemai1 I discovered Buster Keaton this year on TCM one late night, laughed my ass off, wondered how back then he did some of his film tricks, but just enjoyed the simple, silly skits he did. God bless, him. so sad he had such bad luck in Hollywood after his success in silent films. he deserved better!
@srgreeneyed: um no disrespect and all but how can you be blind and be able to read what that person wrote?. Don't tell me your blind but you could only see words... Idk if your blind or not.. Hopefully not but dude c'mon..
@sdjesshk ... You do realize he has NO facial expression. That's sort of the point and the beauty. He is the ultimate straight man: He does ridiculously amazing stunts/physical comedy with the most stoic of expressions. The man was suffused with lithesome grace, I've never seen anyone entangle themselves in rope with more languid finesse.
Don't get me wrong, I love Chaplin too, but Keaton deserves his dues.
Charlie chaplin is definitely the best comic actor of all time. I love the boxing scene from Charlie Chaplins "CITY LIGHT". Go see it and you will agree with me!!!
@twinsrule1987 Exactly. Unlike the comedy flicks nowadays, being the rude and promptly insulting farces that they are, these silent films never found fault with the audience. When you watch this you don't feel rated or attacked in any twisted ways, no matter who you are. You can just enjoy and have a laugh.
@FlippinBooks: Don't you just want to put him in your pocket and carry him around with you? (Geez, I make the poor guy sound like a teacup poodle lol.)
im only 12 but hell anyone can evenjoy silent movies with people who can do there own stunts witch people would defenatily think twice about doing now
whew!! this is gso great..hoping that this clip can help out on our play..hahahahaha...this clip is just at the same level with charlie chaplin..it's so great.. :D
It's almost amazing how scrawny and tiny he makes himself appear here, yet if you really look at him especially at 4:35, you see how athletic and toned this actor was. His commitment to his art gave him a good body.
In this is is taking some real punches if you watch..My father use to watch this stuff and just sit there with a smile on his face as I would step out of the house with no intrest at all...oh how I wish my father was still here so I could sit next to him and we could enjoy this together..25 years later I am also wishing that I had pursued acting, if only in dramatic plays....instead I am a dumptruck driver..
@BrightGreenDream I think the same thing everytime I watch anything featuring Buster, to me he's the American equivalent of Chaplin in terms of comedy and being director and producer of his films.. I guess Charlie just knew how to get further ahead.
@BrightGreenDream: I seriously feel that Buster Keaton is waay better then Charlie Chaplin.. I have watched some of Charlie Chaplin's work, and it just doesn't seem too live up to Buster Keaton's work? And I only heard about Buster Keaton when we watched one of his films in Drama, for our clowning assessment. I don't see how it is fair O=
@BrightGreenDream I am a devoted Charlie Chaplin fan and although I've heard of Buster Keaton I've never really taken the time to see any of his work. Maybe i was afraid that he was going to be too much like Chaplin. But I L-M-A-O through this entire clip, Buster Keaton is hilarious, I need to see more.MOAR.
@BrightGreenDream It's because Chaplin had a lot of power and artistic freedom in the movie industry. He basically could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. It was the dream of every filmmaker. No one had it. Keaton went through a lot of pain and depression because of the limitations imposed to him by the industry. Today cinema is becoming cheap and accessible. Anyone can make movies, put them on festivals and on YouTube and have a chance to be famous. I think that's great for cinema.
@BrightGreenDream No wonder. This for example just doesn't compare even a little bit to Chaplin's boxing in city lights. Chaplin's is a masterpiece, Keaton's is boring.
No, how can you say that? His tricks are unique, he invented many things. For example, when he jumps on the judges' hands - this scene you can see in many following cartoons and comedies today.
@BrightGreenDream Yes, but that doesn't make me laugh. I don't enjoy it. He just does some good stunts, very good stunts indeed. But it gives me the feeling that he does movies just to do his stunts. He doesn't have the poetic touch and flow that Chaplin's movies have.
@nakmax I like Chaplin, but I prefer Keaton and Lloyd, and Keaton over Lloyd at that. I think this is one of those discussions where reasonable people can disagree. I find a good deal of poetry in The General, for example, and, as far as the stunts go, I like seeing the extreme to which Keaton takes the human body. And what is the great stone face if not poetic? I don't deny Chaplin's skill, but Keaton had a much more anarchic sense of comedy, which I prefer.
@BrightGreenDream - I guess because Chaplin came first and paved the way for Keaton and others. But I think that more people these days (like me) prefer watching Keaton over Chaplin, because Chaplin can get a bit too maudlin for present-day tastes, while Keaton is rarely (maybe never) maudlin.
You're right. Just when Keaton tends toward sentimentality he throws in a curveball like in the film "College" when he ends marrying the girl then there are scenes of them having children, then they appear as cranky old people and then the final tombstones scene. He could be pretty dark as times which I really liked about him. Although "The Cameraman" is pretty sweet for a Keaton film but some of that may have been MGM's idea and not totally Buster's.
@Busterseyes - Agreed about your points. I saw the ending to "College" on TV when I was a boy, and even then I was expecting some sentimental ending. When I saw THAT ending, though, my mouth dropped way open - and I was laughing as well. After my experiences, I still laugh at it, but I recognize the truth behind it. Like you, I appreciate Keaton's honesty. Yeah, that was MGMs doing, not Buster's, for The "Cameraman" By then artisitic control over his films had been taken out of his hands.
@WSenator1 Not quite...the story for "The Cameraman" was his idea. MGM was temporarily smart enough to allow him to edit their script and film it back in Los Angeles (after he begged them enough). It was after this film that they inexplicably denied him any further creative control...fortunately, if "The Cameraman" was the final Keaton film of sorts, then what a heck of a great finale it was. Rest assured that you are watching Keaton, not MGM.
GOOD LORD, that was funny. I love silent comedies: they avoid the pitfalls of their modern counterparts by having NO DIALOGUE, for one...and ferociously talented actors, for another.
brilliant.
