You therefore should have NOT referenced a "rally," or dismissed assassinations. the history may be benign, but guns have no place at Presidential event(an event where the sitting President will be). It presents a danger to the President . How is the secret service supposed to know if its someone carrying it to protect himself or to protest for his 2nd amendment rights, or a would-be assassin? The courts would like people to think that the 2nd amendment is about hunting but the reality is that it is to protect the citizens from others and particularly the government. The government is supposed to protect us from violent people and invasion yet it is becoming invasive in what they are doing. I may not wish to carry a firearm myself, but I do support the rights of those who wish to. It's their decision whether or not to have one, and as long as they can be tracked, I don't have a problem with someone having one as long as it's not concealed.

We don't shoot someone because they oppose our views; we shoot someone who would take our Liberty. You would beat up someone because they disagreed with you... we would not.
This is for those who don't understand the concept of defense. We don't shoot to kill, although it happens, we shoot to stop the threat. If whoever we shoot keeps coming at us... we shoot them again and again until they stop coming at us... then we stop. If they die... not my problem... they should have stopped coming at me. Nothing wrong with carrying a gun where needed, but I dont think one needs it at a Presidential function. To me it smacks of an attempt of intimidation to those who disagree with you. Who's free then?
Let me see if you can understand this.... how many presidents were shot or shot at? A total of nine. Now how many people have carried weapons at presidential events? From George Washington to at least Howard Taft, people were allowed to carry weapons at all times... and that includes at Presidential events. Lets say that there were 10 events per presidency, and 100 armed people at each event.. that is 27,000 people carrying guns. That's 1/1000th of 1%. And that is significant how?
Carrying a gun and a sign saying that you are going to water the tree of liberty with the blood of tyrants to a political meeting is an attempt at intimidation.

You therefore should have NOT referenced a "rally," or dismissed assassinations. Matthews was trying to point out the assassinations and your point would have still been well made had you framed your argument in the context he chose.

What I'm trying to say is that I think you'll perhaps be more effective if you're willing to redo and maybe redo again to be come up with phrases, expressions, witticisms and other things to which people will go, "Wow. the history may be benign, but guns have no place at Presidential event(an event where the sitting President will be). It presents a danger to the President . How is the secret service supposed to know if its someone carrying it to protect himself or to protest for his 2nd amendment rights, or a would-be assassin? The courts would like people to think that the 2nd amendment is about hunting but the reality is that it is to protect the citizens from others and particularly the government. The government is supposed to protect us from violent people and invasion yet it is becoming invasive in what they are doing. I may not wish to carry a firearm myself, but I do support the rights of those who wish to. It's their decision whether or not to have one, and as long as they can be tracked, I don't have a problem with someone having one as long as it's not concealed.
Yeah, I'm a liberal (generally), but I don't have a problem personally with people possessing firearms that aren't concealed. It's a deterrent and a defensive tool when used properly and we shouldn't take away someone's rights to it.

Also, I would get away from "intent" as actions are the only thing that should be prosecutable.

Imagine a school that was not a government indoctrination center. Imagine a school where the teachers were not afraid to punish children when they got out of line. You need to start backing the government out of every aspect of our lives and begin to notice what would happen. Do I support banning guns on school grounds? Only if a PRIVATE school does it because property rights must always be respected. Take the federal government out of the picture and you would likely not have a Columbine.

However I have to ask, with remarks made about Obama being assassinated in the months since the election, and the tension all over the US if this was a wise decision. Too me its asking for trouble. Bringing a weapon to any event where there is bound to be high tensions and possible violence is asking for some one to get killed. Now, just making some assumptions based on the number of speeches by each president, and even if they only gave five public speeches a year, that would be around 700 public speeches. Now lets guess that at each public speech, there were 85 armed men, that's 59,500 armed men that attended speeches. During that time, four were shot. That's 5 nines.

If anyone wanted to harm the president there is no gun law that could stop them. People should really use some common sense. I have never had to use my gun before but having it has squashed a couple of situations. I would bet that most people going nuts over this have not been around responsible gun carrying people before. Let me see if you can understand this.... how many presidents were shot or shot at? A total of nine. Now how many people have carried weapons at presidential events? From George Washington to at least Howard Taft, people were allowed to carry weapons at all times... and that includes at Presidential events. Lets say that there were 10 events per presidency, and 100 armed people at each event.. that is 27,000 people carrying guns. That's 1/1000th of 1%. And that is significant how?

Amen, I grew up around recon marines just home from Nam. The "weapons" I was taught to look for are things like long sticks(pikes)short sticks(kobatons)socks(choke cords)shoe strings(choke cords&handcuffs)saplings&green limbs(springs for traps&whips that cut)sharp sticks for stabbing. Do thay want us to pave everything and go naked arming only the elite(power corupts)
