  • It was not sung by both sides; not by the traitors: "let us die to make men free" it says.

  • I like when he said a person does not have to be rich to own a song

  • why does he strum his guitar on the fretboard and not on the sound hole? i've noticed he does it all the time...

  • Oh Christ, I totally got chills listening to this.

  • This is, and always was, a yankee blue belly song. Never sang by CSA soldiers or militia!!

  • @TheBuster31 correct CSA #1 we did not loose we gave up :::

  • This song wasn`t sung by both sides.

  • @pelinallat If Johnny Cash says they did then they DID.

  • WOW!!

  • who had to be THAT GUY who disliked this? really?

  • @Nateh918 ever heard of osama bin laden?

  • @Nateh918 Jews dislike this because God refers to them as his bad grapes

(Isaiah 5:7) For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

Try reading the whole chapter or better yet the the Bible!

  • If any Human Really does go Straight to Heaven It would have Been Mr.Cash

  • @Gegamel76 hey look a troll

  • the oine yank that watched this didnt like it... this is amazing

  • The American civil war is still the deadliest war in US history 612000 dead. A prelude to the massacres of WW1.I wonder why Europeans didn't see it coming and marched out with medals shining.

  • @Durendal33 Europe had the Crimean War, the Franco-Prussian War and many colonial wars to base their decisions on. The problem was both sides thought they HAD learned from these conflicts, but they were the wrong things

  • @thebigJM92 Still a shame we lost a great singer like Johnny Cash

  • @Durendal33 Definitely

  • i always think of proud yank when i hear this song but now look at the usa there broke and have the black jesus runing things wat the fuck happen man wtf happen

  • Here's the thing. There's just no way any Confederate who ever fought in the ACW was singing this song as they marched home. LOL

  • musicians used to be able to sing religious songs in public?? he'd be thrown in jail for singing this today. (not completely joking, either). beautiful song. great performance. :)

  • @a35intheShade Amen! The Statler Brothers did so as late as 2002!

  • see you in heaven johnny reb

See you in hell billy yank

  • @GrandNagusRom Amen brother

  • What asshole dont like this?

  • @Luckisaor maybe it's a Vogon: tatatataaa... no....

  • @Luckisaor Some mexican

  • @SoCalBuck42 There was actually mexicans in the civil war too. On both sides Yankees and Confederates...Mexico actually saved our asses from the french...The French were trying to invade the U.S. through northern mexico while the U.S. was weak due to the civil war. Thats why we observe Cinco de Mayo, obviously you didn't know that....if your saying some mexican disliked it. Next time get your Intel right with your cheesy remarks.

  • @Chon12490 The french weren't invading us and the Mexicans didn't stop them. Napoleon put Maximilian, in Mexico as an attempt to control the area. He'd wanted to get a foothold in the New World again. Obviously, putting this puppet leader in charge of Mexico was in direct defiance of the Monroe Doctrine. He only got away with it because the US was involved in the Civil War. We eventually helped the Mexicans kick the French out of Mexico. Just saying. But he's just bein a dumbass racist

  • Johnny Cash, Legend.

  • I don't know why, but when he pulls his guitar behind his back at 1:38, the strap looks like a bandolier or baldric, which makes him look a bit more like a minuteman. It's as if to say that he is willing to be a soldier for his God- his guitar and music as his rifle. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I can't help but think that even perhaps these subtle movements, and his marching at 3:15 makes this song all the more beautiful and meaningful, whether it was intentional or not.

  • @Sramaram

No, I don't think your reading too much into it. I mean to me, I can clearly invision him back in those days. Your right about the 1:38 mark it's almost chilling how close it looks like that.

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • I went to school when this song was allowed and proudly sung!!! Todays generations do not realize what has been lost in todays public education system

  • @czar4freedom You went to school? Oh wow.

  • @Dibbleg1 You're being a cunt.

  • @oranjeleeuwen1 I find it offensive for people to patronize my generation. I truely hope that you get a thesarus for Christmas because your language is very rude. June Carter would back hand you.

  • @Dibbleg1 Oh no! Not a backhand! how the hell is anyone patronizing your generation? and I'm sorry for I offended you. You're being a vagina. Better?

  • @oranjeleeuwen1 You very polite. Thats better. I like vagina.

  • @Dibbleg1 I'm surprised.

  • @oranjeleeuwen1 Your a very intelligent human being too. God bless you.

  • @Dibbleg1 haha I'm an A student so I thank you for the compliment.

  • @oranjeleeuwen1 Your very welcome. Now go pull your bottom lip over your head and swallow.

  • @Dibbleg1 You're really funny! That may have been one of the stupidest things used as an insult that I've heard in a while.

  • Amazing performance from JR - almost like a character from the Bible - it's been said before and his charisma & legend seems to grow over time. Walk the Line R.I.P.

  • 0 dislike what now!

  • Everyone who loves Johnny Cash...has a big heart!

  • Absolutely amazing! Very patriotic and heartfelt.

  • OMG I miss Johnny and good old musical TV shows like his!!!!!

  • Awesome song, sung by a stellar man.

  • his voice always moving, even after so many years

  • great song, great singer, great message.

    Big G

  • johnny cash there will be never another.

  • I'm pretty sure it was mostly the north that sung this.

  • @GrandNagusRom

Unless we're fighting aliens, of course.

  • I had no idea this existed.... thank you so much

  • @GrandNagusRom Amen

  • @GrandNagusRom Black people who were no longer slaves were winners.

  • @Hermey7777 YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!!! thanks for posting that comment

  • Stupidest war ever, and this makes me depressed.

  • Am I right in saying that the Civil War in America killed more than all subsequent wars combined?

  • @MZophiel no i dont think so, i think WW2 was teh worst and killed 50 million i think

  • @patriciacarrasco I meant American troops (from both sides). Sorry was a bit drunk when I wrote that and wasn't very clear.

  • @MZophiel American troops, yes, no other war had more American casualties then the Civil War

  • @MZophiel The civil war casualties, exceed loss of Americans in all its other wars combined, from the Revolution through Vietnam.

  • Like all Cash songs - he gives his all !

  • Sadly the Man In Black would not be allowed by law to sing this song to our troops to were he still with us. Even Chaplains can no longer by law mention the word "God" in their words to U.S. servicemen today. :(

  • Slavery was completely BARBARIC and INHUMANE but I do wonder if we could have resolved the the slavery issue like all the other western nations without killing 1/4th of our population. Many other nations at that time paid the slave-holders for their slaves and banned slavery without war.

  • @wtmj100 The problem was the South would not accept anything and were ready to go to war.

  • @GrandNagusRom I'll tell you who won the war, the United States won the war, because we are still one united nation. IF not there would be both a United States of American and Confederate States of America

  • Thanks for posting this... and thanks for the warning - my timbers were shivered. Fabulous video.

  • For some reason this makes me want to play fallout 3

  • Well this 'song' is in the Ancient & Modern Hymnbook used by the Anglican Church - it has beautiful words - and I loved it so much that 41 years ago it was sung at my wedding. I can say that unlike many wedding hymns nearly all the congregation knew the words by heart and it was sung with gusto.... Oh and I'm not American - live over the pond in the grand UK.

  • my mom loves this song

  • Johnny Cash is the voice of American music!!!!!

  • With deep sincerity and down to earth attitude.

    A very moving performance.

  • over 600,000 dead to free the slaves and keep us united.

  • @darylasmith Nothing to do with the slaves research history

and get it right half of those folks that died were Irish Decent.

  • When the great Johnny Cash presents this grand old song it becomes more than a song, it is a story taking place in front of us all and we begin to feel the heart beat of a Nation divided while these brave souls place themselves into the line of fire. Place themselves into the line of our Nations history.

  • @CrackaStoleMyBoat As much as I agree with your sentiment, I'm afraid this isn't the forum for it.

  • Southerners were mislead by their leaders. Kind of like our country now. Its easy to believe something when its all you have ever been taught. People put too much faith in man instead of god and that is our first mistake.

  • i dont dislike the confederate states of america because they used slaves(although i don't condone slavery), i dislike them because they were traitors to my great country

  • @kingoftheworld656564 its good slavery isnt the reason cause there were 4 confederat slave states and 2 union slave states so your own "great" country was as bad

  • @sexywpgboy im aware. everyone thinks the war was about slavery but it really was about taxes and states rights. i just think that the southern states should have taken a different approach to solving the problem rather then seceeding

  • so beautiful yep the staler bros;,,,./.

  • Johnny Cash does this like nobody else can , My brother Jack is working on this for a show song . Thanks again and keep'em comm'in !!!! Don :)

  • Like The legend said, it was sang by both sides, so you yanks can't take credit for it all. thank you much!

  • @ksmith8446 Umm...Yeah they can. It was written by a Yankee gal. In Washington, DC. The, not as popular, southern version was so poorly written that its popularity never took off. I have a book with it written in it, but I've never heard it sung by anyone except myself; and don't expect my youtube video anytime soon!

  • This song has all ways made me Proud to be an American . I all ways think of Abe Lincoln,,,, TY sooooooooooooo much for posting 5*****

  • "It's Ray Smith here :) And I can assure you Tony and I are English born and bred"

    I'm confused.

  • super
