The most popular ventriloquist figures have wide mouths so instead of following your own lip line you could take the mouth all the way out almost to the cheek lines. Also you could add dimples to your cheeks. When I paint a figure I add a blended berry red to the cheeks, tip of the nose, chin and the front of the neck. Lastly an obvious wig would make you look more like a figure.
