This was back when drivers knew how to race hard but with RESPECT for their fellow competitor. Much of the reason why so many safety precautions now need be taken is because the driver of today would rather wreck someone and win than take 2nd and NOT risk hurting their friend.
Man, I was at this race and had forgotten it's was Schrader's first race win. LOOK at the famous and historic names in that pack. These were the golden days of NASCAR. Nothing contrived, nothing scripted. Many of these teams were ONE car teams and many different makes. It'll never be like that again. I can't even watch NASCAR now. We all know how things are going to turn out. It's so sad this great series has lost touch with what made it great! Sadly, they seem not to care!
I have the ENTIRE race from Introduction, start and finish. I don't know how to upload the race. Can someonone tell how to do it? I would LOVE to show this race to everyone.
@tjazz05 Hey if you ever get this entire race on YouTube will you please let me know? I am a huge Ken Schrader fan and never saw this race! I didn't start watchingt NASCAR till 1990. Thanks!!
Tim Richmond's last full season was 1986. He raced a handful of races in 1987 before retiring due to "pneumonia." What he had in fact was AIDS and he died in August 1989. Ken Schrader's first season with Hendrick was 1988.
It would be better to keep them unrestricted so that the cars don't launch into each other and make every wreck 'The Big One'. The plates make them all bunched up and one slip can cause lots of cars to wreck, and injury can occur there.
These drivers are in NASCAR for a reason: They know how to drive. So let them race full speed.
fox ESPN nobody will ever beet CBS's coverage. other broadcast these days are nothing but a joke. i was watching TNT's nascar coverage the other day and one thing that caught my ming was when a crash happened they were laughing....how can you laugh during a crash? Ken squier will never have done that he would call the crash for the seriousness that it is not laugh as it is a joke thats why Ken squier was the best he knew what and what not to do unlike commentators now (bill weber)
The founding father of NASCAR broadcasting. The man who helped found MRN and bring us flag to flag television racing for the first time in 1979 on that faithful Sunday afternoon in February.
Bob Jenkins is calling IRL races for Versus this year, and I hope they could bring him back to ESPN during their strech of the NASCAR season, and pair him with Dale Jarrett with Dr. Jerry Punch and Jack Arute on pit road, but like everyone said, it would be very hard to find a replacement for Benny Parsons up in the booth.
Could someone repost the video of Ken Schrader in the #90 flipping at Daytona in 1987. It was the raw feed and had Kenny cussing up a storm to the safety officials for their slow response. I bet the PR firm at Little Debbie or the cup team got wind of it and threatened the poster to take it down since it shows Kenny's 'bad' side. Whatever.
Earnhardt gets turned sideways entering turn one on the final lap, and of course doesn't wreck. Earnhardt gets sideways through the tri-oval on the final lap, and of course doesn't wreck. Ned Jarrett is a true gentleman. I know when Ken Squier said "Can he stay on the point? I think that's where he wants to be" Ned's initial thought was, no he's not.

I love watching the old live footage of NASCAR races. I started watching not long after this race, late 1988/early 1989. 'tbk.fameflame.dk' is a phenomenal place for old racing videos.

This was good restrictor plate racing. Not this two uni car tandem crap of today.

I can't look at this finish and not say "Tim Richmond wins the 1988 Talladega 500."

Now wait when did Tim Richmond quit racing. Because that looks like Richmonds car. I alaways thought he "quit'' in 89.

Crap I had pneumonia this last winter and I can relate to Tim. It was quite rough.

This was back when REAL racecar drivers could put on a show! If that would've been today's drivers, they would've all been wadded up in turn 2.

I'm sure he's a good guy but why does Rick WIlson either choke or crash like every single race?

Ugh, the first year of plate racing.

Now its just boring. FOX is great and some of the others are good to. But ESPN is crap. Hope NASCAR gets rid of ESPN after this year.

unless ESPN goes back to the Speedworld format and we get Bob Jenkins in the booth, dr jerry in the pits itd be hard for someone to replace BP though

Yes! Thanks for posting this. Kenny is the nicest guy in NASCAR. I've been a fan of his for 20+ years. (I'm also a Shannon Babb fan!) Dirt rules!

Wow what a finish. Kenny is my favorite driver. Thank you for posting, as this was before my time.

yeah, they had restrictor plates. After 87 they went to the plates.

did the cars have a restrictor plate in this race?
