Dessay a été une fabuleuse reine de la nuit. En public c'était stupéfiant, y compris quand elle était (très!!) enceinte à AiX En plus, elle a toujours essayé de faire quelque chose dramatiquement de ce court rôle
@mvctecr76 Right it does. I guess I'm a little biased but I liked the production Damrau was involved with in Queen of the Night. Splendid costume and scenery with superb performances. Of course, I'm not trying to take away from Dessay's performance but I HATE the costume they gave her
@ComaLies225 exactly. i mean, there's no denying that Dessay has a great voice, but her stature along with her costume makes the role so much less intimidating. Damrau's performance is terrifying haha, and i also prefer Damrau's voice for this aria. Dessay still does a great job, though.
I think this is just wonderful - both singing and acting. She really plays the emotional blackmail card perfectly here with that fantastic hand gesture at the end. Just great. Thanks for the post.
For sheer acting, Dessay is superb - perhaps better than Damrau (who most consider the definitive Queen of the Night). However, judging by sound alone, my personal favorite is, by far, Luciana Serra. You can see one of her performances here, and it's well worth it.
This is by far the best version I have ever heard. Her voice makes it sound so effortless, she portrays the torment and the madness to perfection. Fabulous!
I think Diana Damrau's is better in every single way. If you disagree, I'd like to know why, because if this version is actually better than I'm really missing something, and I don't want to be out of the loop.
@jaketaz They are both unique... Diana Damrau's performance is more appropriate and her interpretation is more 'demonic' which does represent the aria. This one on the other hand is excellent but not as evil as it should be...
Everything is beautiful, her voice is clear, and the actress and performance are good. However, Her clothes is too cute, wiht this light blue, like a little girl, but the stars on the crown and on the collar is nice.
@ademonprotectsher - First of all, this is not a song. This is an aria. I have worked with many coloraturas throughout the years who have chosen to pull back the d minor coloratura section. I have also worked with others who like to show off by taking the triplets faster. Having coached at Juilliard, there's nothing wrong with her singing except the high F's are thin. This aria is far too often sung in a total frenzy (yeah, characterization) but with no room for stylistic interpretation.
@cowsrkewl1 i was just thinking the same thing. my girlfriend sings opera, and shes great. but man when you're close to her while shes singing...feels like being stabbed in the head
Unlike most people here, I prefer this over Damrau. Damrau seems to struggle to reach the high notes, while Dessay seems to sing them effortlessly. I'm no expert, but Dessay wins for me.
@malialou - I'm with you, my friend. Damrau, besides being a friend, does the best job I've ever heard. Ironically, and despite the fact Sills was my hero, did the worst Queen I've ever worked with in my life. She hated the role and the role hated her.
She would sing this so much better if she would stop contorting her body when singing....there are ways to emote without distorting tonal quality. Look up Diana Damrau.
Fantstic! So good to hear a proper Coleratura with the natural landing on each note. This piece of opera is tried by so many who see it as the 'New York marathon' when it should be a walk in the park, the opening of a can of pepsi, the familiar taste of a cheese sandwich. It should be natural and not forced. This lady did it good for me. And - I applaud her. x x x
Her dress, or costume, could have been more impressive... I like Damrau's dress (the dark one, NOT the green one!:)) This dress just doesn't bring out the... Queen of the Night. Wonderful voice, though!:D
I love her voice! but you can tell she is not German. She pronounces and stresses words and phrases oddly in her acting;) but i do love this preformance!
I bet the staging was made by nursery school teacher... Uh no wait a minute, sorry... My statement was an offense to all the nursery school teachers who do far better than this with their three year old little performers.... No wonder why according to some of you, Nathalie does not manage to portray the Queen... paper leaves colored my pupils doesn't help!
@jd7x7jd Actually I must admit that the childish staging quite fits the "leitmotiv" of the Flute wich takes place in a kind of fantasy world. Still, I believe in my humble opinion that the staging is very poor especially the lights that do not enhance the terrifying atmosphere! This being said, i totally respect your taste!
This is not the Queen that I expect when you say Queen of the night... Nataile is a great voice maybe the best, but I think she is not very succesfull in the characterisation of this role
@ElphabaEmerald182 That ridiculous head/neck gear doesn't help does it!? I don't quite understand why they've dressed the Queen of the Night up like Iolanthe, the fairy queen!
Ca doit etre dur ... Surtout en mimant bien les sentiments , j'ai regarder les autres elles n'en font pas autant ! et elle , c'est parfait T___T ( je n'ai que 16 ans ) VIVE LE CLASSIQUE =DDD
such a horrible disguise for der Köningen.... and it's clearly not the very characterisation and realisation for this role... I prefer Damrau's she expresses it in a very more accurate way.
For all the folks out there that need a translation ;) Google helped a great deal. The vengeance of Hell boils in my heart, Death and despair flame around me! If Sarastro does not through you feel the pain of death, Then you will be my daughter nevermore. Disowned may you be forever, Abandoned may you be forever, Destroyed be forever All the bonds of nature, If not through you Sarastro becomes pale! (as in death) Hear, Gods of Revenge, hear a mother's oath!
Wow! No other singer demonstrates how the character is torn between the desire to murder Sarastro and love for her daughter. You can see her in the grips of her psychosis knowing that what she is asking will traumatize her daughter but can not escape the rage she feels.
In every other performance of this the melody and the meaning of the words seem to contradict each other. This is the only version where the singer shows how the tune is meant to depict the characters conflicted emotional state.
@MIndMattersMost I agree. While I like the Damrau performance for its art direction (you have to admit, the Queen's costume for that performance is pretty snazzy), this has a more human quality to it that is easier to identify with.
@MIndMattersMost agree agree agree agree agree. Absolutely. To put it in more crudely, she's gone off on one. But she does it in tune. Amazing. Wish my rants were so eliquent.
Her acting is splendid, better than Damrau's in my opinion, and I'm very impressed that she can sing so flawlessly even as she's acting and walking around like she is.
@Billythachikk You have no idea how much I also enjoyed this performance. You may have gotten goosebumps but I also got them on top of a tingling in my entire brain.
I have to say that I prefer Damrau, as I think she portrays the emotion better. She's meant to be pissed - Dessay seems too sad. Both have fantastic voices though.
Also, something I noticed regarding Natalie's is her ability to sustain a whole phrase without the need to take a breathe. The phrases flow better compared to Diana.
Diana Damrau does have a bigger voice and her costume in the Royal Opera performance was better..I hate that wobbly collar thing Natalie is wearing..I do LOVE Natalie's gorgeous, free voice though!! she seems so kind and good after Dambrau's acting....she is like a sweet and tender queen of the night...Dambrau is much more agressive to my mind. But Dambrau is better to me.
She should sing it with more vengeance. Those who said that Dessay is not professional enough should understand that Dessay is French and perhaps, she did not interpret it accurately for the aria is in German. (Damrau is German and she definitely should sing this better for she should be able to interpret this aria better.) Anyway, both singers are good!
Pas mal mais on sent que c'est peut être un peu trop virtuose pour elle. Menfin ca reste bien mieux que la reine de la nuit pathétique servie hier soir à Lausanne.
It´s such a surprise to hear the difference from her speaking voice to her opera one. It seems they belonge to a diferent person!. she sounds so great. Very impresive. Thnaks for posting
diana damrau sing this song with ease.... unlike dessay, i THINK she's not.... especially on her staccatos... this should be sung in your coloruta soprano or stratospheric one.... but this is not...
Diana Damrau's costume was outstanding but in comparison Natalie was just so much more creepy as the queen should be, and when she hits the high notes she sounds like a song bird. This is defnatley my favorite version of the piece.
brilliant, ready made sense of the phrasing and different portions of the aria, doing it this way!S he's actually experiencing the emotions as if it was the first time
To me, this version makes the most sense dramatically. The Queen SHOULD be conflicted. Natalie actually shows the conflict and the anguish over the thought of forasaking her daughter. The coloratura becomes an expression of her torment and not simply an "ornament" to the piece (which is the way most coloraturas sing this). Brava!
I'm not so sure, at that syage she's gone completely mad and i am not convince she has enough wits left to be conflicted! she really is into this murdering of Zarastro and nothing else matters any more!

Wäre ja ok, wenn sie nicht die ganze Arie verzappeln würde. Wirkt auch etwas angestrengt. Da gibt es schon bessere Interpretationen.

She sings this very well I think. Yes it does look like she's struggling but I like her voice a lot!

@Gossi93PBoy Yeah I agree; even Diana Damrau's out fit is far better.

I'm not a fan of this, this song is to "big" for her, I see her struggling as some parts...good effort.

Pas mal mais on sent que c'est peut être un peu trop virtuose pour elle. Menfin ca reste bien mieux que la reine de la nuit pathétique servie hier soir à Lausanne.

diana damrau sing this song with ease.... unlike dessay, i THINK she's not.... especially on her staccatos... this should be sung in your coloruta soprano or stratospheric one.... but this is not...

Diana Damrau's costume was outstanding but in comparison Natalie was just so much more creepy as the queen should be, and when she hits the high notes she sounds like a song bird. This is defnatley my favorite version of the piece.

she failed to sing this well during her staccato routines.... diana damrau is better....

brilliant, ready made sense of the phrasing and different portions of the aria, doing it this way!S he's actually experiencing the emotions as if it was the first time

I expected much more from Natalie, vocally and dramatically.

you try and do better!

I would, but I'm not a singer nor do that for living. She is a singer and a great one. Thats why I expected way much more.

Brava!

@coloratura518
I'm not so sure, at that syage she's gone completely mad and i am not convince she has enough wits left to be conflicted! she really is into this murdering of Zarastro and nothing else matters any more!
