  • I first started hearing these and finding out what they were here in Washington last summer, it was beautiful! Ours tend to make a much longer, deeper pitched diving sound though. Truly neat to hear.

  • Wonderful sound always hear it here in Washington;)

  • Thanks! Living in Nebraska, these birds are pretty common. Lovely birds, and their call always gives me a Spring/Summer feeling! Never have heard of the booming, but I recall that there were periods in June when they would swoop down towards the front lawn when certain insects were hatching. Quite the sight!!!:)

  • I really appreciate this video. I wish I'd seen one within 3 feet of the ground! I embedded it in my blog post about nighthawks "GardeningwithBinoculars"

  • Living in Toronto I finally know what bird is making that call every night. Thanks!

  • We hear these in our neighborhood in Southern Wisconsin on late summer evenings. I have always maintained they were nighthawks and people looked at me like I was nuts. Thanks for confirming what I heard, but for some reason don't see!

  • I had never seen these birds before but on 9-3 I saw them in the field across the street must have been 20 or more in the flock as they continued to soar across the field and this continued all late afternoon. Great video , thanks for sharing

  • Watched a flock of 30+ Common Night Hawks last evening, as they flew along the shoreline of the Ottawa River, near Pembroke, Ontario. Lovely to see such large numbers, as I haven't seen them in several years!

  • WTF? I thought Nighthawks sounded more like a whip-poor-will, but more drawn out?

  • I grew up in Montreal listening to these birds as I waited to fall asleep, I haven't heard one for many years. Thanks for the lovely memory. I now live in the Laurentians in Quebec, where whippoorwills were once common. Also gone. Nostalgia trip

  • Wow I'm so glad you posted this great piece of info. I was camping this last 4th of july weekend and had my first encounter with 3 of them. Tuolumne county forrest ca. I had never heard of; or had seen a Nighthawk before. I was startled. I thought my dog was going to be leward away from camp, following them. LOL any way thank you!

  • this bird has chased me over 20 times i thought it is a rabid bat because it only comes out at night

  • THANK YOU!!! We purchased a cabin in southern Colorado a few years ago and noticed these birds. The area of our cabin has a decent bear population, and the first time we heard this, we thought that it was indeed a bear. My husband noticed the sound occurred when these birds dove, we put two and two together We jokingly call them Bear Birds. Had never seen one before. BUT, tonight, here at our everyday house in Denver area, there was one circling around. Been here 16 years, 1st sighting.

  • This is a nice channel! always looking for it!

  • We had 9 of these awesome birds flying around over my house this week. What a sight.

  • I always wondered what caused that noise...I hear it just about every night in the summer.

  • I hope I see some this summer.

  • I love siting out in the evenings watching them swoop and dive eating bugs but they stat up so high I cant get a good look at them I thought they were bats at first. thanks for the vidieo

  • One of the pleasures of living in Baker Cityin Eastern Oregon is the strong population of common nighthawks that return each year to this valley. They can be seen over Geisrer-Pollman park from early July until September as they hunt along the Powder river and search for flying insects. Many summer evenings I will be serenaded by the peeent peent of four or five nighthawks flying low over the canopy of trees. Some do nest I am sure on the many flat roofs of old victorian stores along Main Street

  • Now, how hard is it to make a version sans blah blah, with just the bird?

  • @froellig I likethe way they're doing it. I mean they're giving information about the bird and sharing their experiences.

  • I love the sound of these birds. Especially late on Summer nights. I live in Pittsburgh and they are very common in my area. I had one circleing the house from around 12:30 am till 1:30 am one night. Definately my favorite bird!!!

  • I read somewhere that nighthawks aren't as common as they used to be. Years ago they would fly above residential area of the small town I lived in. Now you don't see them very often anymore.

  • I've heard that whirring sound as I've sat outside in the evening. They will fly right by me just a foot away. They never come down low like that during the day.

  • This is, amazing! For a second, some of those sound like something that sped away faster than you could hear it.

  • Cute bird

  • Thank you so much for this! I live in northwestern Oregon and although I knew the nighthawks and their call I did not know that the "boom" was coming from them too. That sound has been driving me crazy for years not knowing what was making it. Where I live the sound is very loud because of the acoustical nature of the place- you wouldn't believe the ideas I came up with for the origin of the sound! Seems really silly not to have understood that it came from the nighthawks now! Thanks again!

  • @k9nething @grammisan @giveandlive @conifergreen @cazortz Thank you all for the great comments. Am glad you enjoyed the video!

  • One of the things that I liked about living in Eastern Oregon was watching and hearing the sounds of the nighthawks. Now I live in Western Oregon where there are no nighthawks. Summer just doesn't seem the same without them.

  • After hearing the calls and seeing the shape here of the nighthawk, I am 90% sure these are the fellows I have seen at dusk while I was working for a week in the "southwest". I think it was either Nashville or Memphis. I do remember it was after sunset and they kept going in concentric circles above the light poles.

  • I have lived in a forested area for the last 5 years and there are nighthawks here too. I have heard that booming sound since I was first here and was stumped to what it was. Earlier this year I was talking to some people that came through here and that subject came up and they told me that they had heard it was nighthawks making that sound, Now this video finally confirms it. Thanks Greg!

  • I was once in Starkville, Mississippi, on the University of Mississippi campus, and...I think I may have approached a nest too closely--I think there was a nest on the gravel roof of a 1-story building. At any rate, one of these nighthawks swooped very close (within 1 meter) to my head and I must say, at this distance, the sound is quite terrifying and startling.
