The best there ever was! Justice always prevailed...well in all but one episode in the half hour b&W days. Chester's fault, of course! Over 660 episodes which makes it the longest running drama of any kind EVER!!
Eu adorava ver esse filme, só que tinha era que espiar por trás da porta, era muito pequena e mamae nao deixava ver porque passava de noite. Mas eu sim via rssssssss. Muito bom!
This "schmaltzy" version of the theme, 'arbutus', is similar to the one heard at the end of the radio show in its later years, as George Walsh announced, "'GUNSMOKE', produced and directed in Hollywood by Norman MacDonnell, stars William Conrad as Matt Dillon, U.S. Marshal..". That was perfect for its time- the "grittier" version used at the end of the later TV shows was perfect in its own way...
Gunsmoke was great show in the middle years, but toward the last, Matt wasn't on much. That made all the difference. I don't know why he was hardly on. I guess he just wanted to work an hour or two a week, which is fine. But it took the heart out of the show I think.
Hello robinxyz101, I'm glad you like my video. I made another Gunsmoke video and have a picture of Burt Reynolds (Quint) on it. As for "Thad" I didn't use him because I really never thought about it. On this video I used the actors/actresses that I am familiar with. I am so used to seeing these guys on TVLand every day that I never think about the other characters. Someone kept asking about Burt and Dennis Weaver so I made a shorter video and added them. Thanks for stopping by. It's aprreciated!
Hi, Paula. This musical slide presentation in homage to "Gunsmoke" is simply great. I'd really appreciate it if you would visit my YouTube site and comment on my contributions to "Gunsmoke" (ergo "Theme From 'Gunsmoke'" and "Gunsmoke's Dodge City"). Very touching tribute to the cast of "Gunsmoke" at the end of this video. Again, wonderful version. Cordially, John
Hello Again John, Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you like my video. I will gladly visit your site and look at your videos. Thank you for taking time to watch my video and to leave a message. It's greatly appreciated! :o)
The show originally wanted John Wayne for the part of Matt Dillon but he didn't want to commit to a weekly series and instead suggested James Arness for the role. The rest as they say is history.
Hi iluvbenjoe there are many sites where you can view old tv shows with or even without downloading. These sites have their own embedded players allowing you to view a show without using up more memory by downloading.just google "free tv" and try some out.
Hello gerryups, I don't know if there is a website where you can download free westerns. Does anyone out there know of a website like this? Thanks in advance for your help! :o)
I love to go nostalgia hunting on you tube. Thanks for posting a great one. Where did you find the version with the guitar melody interlude. Here's a bit of trivia, did you know that William Conrad played "Marshal Dillon" on radio before it was a television show?
Hello tspoonhunter, I'm glad you like my video. Thank you for taking time to and to leave a message. It's greatly appreciated!! :o) I this version of the song from a website that has all kinds of tv theme songs that you can download for free. I love this version as it is soft and easy lsitening. :o)
I will be 56 years old and I still enjoy the westerns. At least they are back on TV every and we can buy a few DVD's. Thanks for a great job and bringing back some great memories.
Interesting to compare this later, schmaltzy version of gunsmoke with the rather grittier looking B&W version of 1962, which concentrated on the thing we wanted to see - gunplay, duelling on Main Street. I think this kind of sanitising of the western paved the way for the brutality of the spaghetti western, Peckinpah etc. What do other viewers think?
Hi Steacy783. I made this video with the characters/actors I am familiar with. I have never seen an episode with Burt or Dennis as they were on before my time. I bearly remember this show as I was only 8 when it went off the air, but thanks to the TVLAND channel showing reruns I get to enjoy the show. They have only aired the episodes with "Tad" and "Newly". And with Buck Taylor being my favorite, naturally I used "Newly" and not "Tad" in my video. :o)
I do like Burt and Dennis. I loved Burt in "Smokey and the Bandit" and I loved Dennis when he played the detective named McCloud. I am serioulsy considering doing another Gunsmoke video with Burt and Dennis in it. I will have to see if I can find some good pictures of them as their GS characters. :o)
Dennis was Matts first deputy and Burt I believe was a black smith. We really are talking black and white days. Likely the first season!!! Good hunting !!!
forever one of the greatest westerns....nothing like this anymore...nothing comes close...i will never forget this coming on at night in chicago when i was a kid.....just great memories
The show was 'Branded'. It starred Chuck Connors and ran for two seasons (I think) back in the late 60's. One of the last 30 minute westerns I do believe.
It was called "Branded", with Chuck Conners. I believe it was from 1963. Hope it helps. He was "branded" because they thought he had betrayed the cavalry, so they kicked him out. Of course, this is the same guy who did "Rifleman" you can watch the clip, right here on YouTube.
im trying 2 find the music that they play in western movies when people r going 2 go into a gun fight. there was 1 called Western Theme but its not on youtube anymore and i cant find it anywhere. does anybody no wat im talking about? if u do please tell me where i can find it
Hello BLOSSOMANDDECAY. Wow! You are very lucky to have Buck in the family!! He is one of my favorite actors and recently I had the previlage to get an autographed picture from him. I will treasure it always. Thanks for taking time to watch the video and to leave a comment. It's greatly appreciated!! :o)

I wish TVLand would do a special tribute to both these actors and give them a special award for lifetime achievement.

It's Gunsmoke Trail done on MGM records in the 50's?? Was it done by afellow named Carson Robinson? or am I out to lunch on this one?
Hello QWZXM. I'm sorry but I don't know the name of the song or who composed it. I got this song from a website that has all kinds of tv theme show songs. It doesn't give any information about the song. It just gives the name. This file was named "Gunsmoke Theme Song--CD version". Sorry I can't help you. CALLING ALL GUNSMOKE FANS...can anyone answer QWZXM's question? Thanks in advance for your help! :o)
Hi garfieldspen. Thanks for taking time to watch my video. No, I don't think I have seen "The Deadly Innocent". Or maybe I have and didn't know what the title was. Care to tell me about the episode? :o)
Oh, sorry!... Anyway: Festus befriends a mentally ill young man who, whenever he sees an animal being harmed - even in hunting for survival - he attacks the person in rage. Then, when the marshall/doc try to put the boy in an asylum, Festus runs away with him to protect him. However, when it comes time for Festus to hunt for food, havoc ensues... Sorry for telling that so poorly: ^_^
Oh you did fine! I have seen that episode...well, only part of it. That's why I wasn't sure by just seeing the name of the title. I got in on the part where Festus runs away with the boy and tries to protect him. It was a good episode. :o)
yeah....it seemed like they made Newly a deputy before a gunsmith (the show didn't show him working much as a gunsmith)...Michael Landon's a great actor! Newly to me is like the Kenny Chesney of Gunsmoke..lol..Did you ever see the episode with Harrison Ford? He was GREAT in it!
No, I've not seen the episode with Harrison Ford. I really don't watch Gunsmoke much. When it comes on, if Buck Taylor (Newly) isn't on the episode then I don't watch it. I only like the episodes that he is on. :o)
I like Bonanza but I wouldn't classify myself as a 'big fan'. I love Lorne Greene (Ben Cartwright) but I love Michael Landon (Joe Cartwright) better. My all-time favorite show is Little House on the Prairie. Michael Landon is my #1 all-time favorite actor. From the time I first saw him on LHOTP he captured my heart and he will always be my #1 favorite until the day I die. In my book, no one will ever take his place. :o)
I never cared for John Wayne. He might have been an okay actor but he never made it on my 'favorite' list. I like James Arness but he never made it very high on my 'favorite' list.
Matt and Festus down....Newly just wasn't quite the rough, bold cowboy type that Matt and Festus were. I think they should've made Newly a bartender instead of a deputy, he fit that part better..
Actually, Newly was a gunsmith and they made him a partime deputy. I like Matt and Festus but , in my book, Newly s much better than either one. Much cuter too!
Hi ejane4. I'm glad you like the video. This is one of my favorite theme songs too. I really like this version as it is soft and soothing. Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts. :o)
Great video! Newly is my favorite character, even though he isn't in the show as much as some of the others. After that is Matt, but they are all good. The casting for this show was perfect and the actors did such a great job. I'm glad I'm able to watch on tv, and I will probably end up buying it on DVD. Thanks for the terrific vid :)
Hi nickygirl1978! I'm glad you like the video. Newly is also my favorite. Buck Taylor is very cute and I enjoy the episodes that he is on. I hope you are able to get the DVD's. They are very good. :o)

I heard that CBS wanted to cancel Gunsmoke a few years earlier than when
it actually happened but the wife of one of
the bigwigs at CBS was a fan of the show
and had enough pull with her husband to keep it going for a few years longer.

I work in a university library that has a good collection of various pop culture
items and one that crossed my desk today was a 1950s era episode script for "Gunsmoke" I believe the episode was
titled "Kitty's missing". Where it came from I'm not sure but obviously used by
someone connected with the show possibly one of the actors.

Rex Koury's theme is almost the same version used in the later years of the original radio series....

yeah....it seemed like they made Newly a deputy before a gunsmith (the show didn't show him working much as a gunsmith)...Michael Landon's a great actor! Newly to me is like the Kenny Chesney of Gunsmoke..lol..Did you ever see the episode with Harrison Ford? He was GREAT in it!
ekgr212 4 years ago
No, I've not seen the episode with Harrison Ford. I really don't watch Gunsmoke much. When it comes on, if Buck Taylor (Newly) isn't on the episode then I don't watch it. I only like the episodes that he is on. :o)

my bad! i just realized you were a big Bonanza fan!lol Didn't dawn on me your username was for Ben C!
ekgr212 4 years ago
I like Bonanza but I wouldn't classify myself as a 'big fan'. I love Lorne Greene (Ben Cartwright) but I love Michael Landon (Joe Cartwright) better. My all-time favorite show is Little House on the Prairie. Michael Landon is my #1 all-time favorite actor. From the time I first saw him on LHOTP he captured my heart and he will always be my #1 favorite until the day I die. In my book, no one will ever take his place. :o)

PS....James Arness is 10X John Wayne in my book! Forget Bonanza, Gunsmoke is best!
ekgr212 4 years ago
I never cared for John Wayne. He might have been an okay actor but he never made it on my 'favorite' list. I like James Arness but he never made it very high on my 'favorite' list.

Matt and Festus down....Newly just wasn't quite the rough, bold cowboy type that Matt and Festus were. I think they should've made Newly a bartender instead of a deputy, he fit that part better..
ekgr212 4 years ago
Actually, Newly was a gunsmith and they made him a partime deputy. I like Matt and Festus but , in my book, Newly s much better than either one. Much cuter too!

The only remaining members of the orginal cast is Matt and Newly. So this video was very memberable and fitting.
