@eier Simply put, I guess I would say that a 4 year old knows right from wrong, whereas a schizophrenic (at least from my understanding of the disease) might not. Then again, I really fear mental illness because of that exact reason- we really do not understand it, medically or as a society. @eier Of course not, thats ridiculous. The problem with illnesses like schizophrenia is that they are essentially untreatable, and it is pretty much impossible to say someone is "cured." Even with the right medication, the illness is volatile, and often medication needs change over time (not to mention many patients refusing to take their meds once they believe they have been "cured"- such is the case with my gf's mom). Thus, I dont see how he could ever be "cured" and released into the public

@eier Simply put, I guess I would say that a 4 year old knows right from wrong, whereas a schizophrenic (at least from my understanding of the disease) might not. Then again, I really fear mental illness because of that exact reason- we really do not understand it, medically or as a society. My girlfriends mother has a form of schizophrenia, and sometimes she is fine, and other times she threatens her neighbors because she believes they are trying to kill her in her sleep. @eier Of course not, thats ridiculous. The problem with illnesses like schizophrenia is that they are essentially untreatable, and it is pretty much impossible to say someone is "cured." Even with the right medication, the illness is volatile, and often medication needs change over time (not to mention many patients refusing to take their meds once they believe they have been "cured"- such is the case with my gf's mom). Thus, I dont see how he could ever be "cured" and released into the public

@eier read my post again. I am aware he can get out. The point is, he is not supposed to get out until he is deemed to be "better" but it isnt really possible to be "better" from schizophrenia. Therefor, he should remain in that institution for the rest of his life, hopefully. Security is definitely a priority in state-run institutions for the criminally insane- at least here in America. He wont be escaping, but hopefully he will be correctly diagnosed and given some type of treatment.

This inevitably leads to perfectly sane people (often rich ones) pleading insanity (with the help of highly successful, unscrupulous lawyers) and getting away with their crimes. While that isn't the case here, the man was clearly competent enough to board the bus and act normal until deciding to FUCKING DECAPITATE SOMEONE.
