I think the words 'State' is used deliberately to imply that the countries in Europe ought to be nothing more than states in the great Socialist Nation of Europe.

Because if Barroso and his ilk have their way, that's where we will eventually end up, already being members of the EU, the individual countries have given up much of their national sovereignty.

With the Lisbon Treaty in effect, a senator in an american state would have more power than the elected leader of a European Nation.

A country simply is all of that, but doesn't need to have a monopoly on violence (i.e. its own army). Therefore it can be perfectly said that the UK is a state and a country, however Scotland is just a country (dependent) but not a state
