  • top of the morn to one an all

  • Prachtig!!!

  • best song ever erin go bragh

  • Paddy, many thanks again. This song and your rendition of it rips my heart out. As the old poem goes, it resembles sadness as the mist resembles the rain. Beautiful.

  • The man's a legend. Best ballad singer ever.

  • great music in this song ,sad wee song too. good singer paddy reilly.

  • what abeutiful song so sad the words

  • paddy reillys a god,lovely song

  • Fair play to you Paddy, the voice has the "nyong" I was in in England of Irish parents, love my Irish & English roots, (makes it a bit of a b******d at the 5 nations tho'!).

  • @patsyod same here my friend

  • The incomparable Paddy Reilly !

    Wonderful voice

  • This should be the official song of the British Royalty. Bastards!

  • @darkoanton5 fuck them

  • OHHH Baby! Let the Free Birds fly...

  • I've an English Mum, a Welsh Father, My Grandfather was Irish......a Mongrel lol but love Scotland and holiday there and Ireland......wer'e all Celt decent........I'm ashamed of the way we neglected Ireland during the famine, but that was then and this is now......lets all remember and be loyal to our country but let us progess from those awful days and unite so it never happens again.

  • Some countries are given a free pass it seems on wrong doing.

  • I do think there are people who won't let the pass lie and like to agitate, we have to move on to make a better world and make sure things like that are never allowed to happen again. Look at the clearances in Scotland and that was their own people who did that to them. All through history there has been wrong doings on all sides, remember it but dont let it fill our hearts with hate.

  • An apology would be all that is needed. I'm half English on my mother's side. But, what's right is right. By the way my other half isn't Irish.

  • The evil people that caused that are long gone darkoanton5 so they arent going to apologise. You only have to read comments on here to see how much hate still seethes. The English no longer go fighting the Scottish, the Scottish no longer come down to Battle the English. We dont go rampaging wanting to battle with the Welsh. The Catholics & Protestants in England, Scotland & Wales all intergrate peacefully........food for thought!

  • They are long gone darkoanton5, so you wont be getting an apology from them. The English, Scottish,& Welsh have all learnt through time and civilisation to live together Catholics & Protestants alike . Somehow theres a minority of the Irish people that havent learnt how to do that yet and they have no respect for their own countrymen. Food for thought perhaps!

  • @1vatersay There is a French saying in Canada from the provice of Quebec. It is Je me souviens. It means I will remember. Never forget the past. Forgive yes. Forget - never. Those Who Forget History Are Doomed to Repeat It

  • Comment removed

  • it doesnt sound as you are

    forgiving anyone anything tho!

I'm the one that said that already to you!

Do you not read constructive criticism!

  • @1vatersay

Did I not say, lets remember and learn

from mistakes . Some real nasty jibes on

    this forum.

  • @1vatersay I never said you said that. Where did I say that? I'm not being nasty. I'm merely stating an opinion.

  • @1vatersay You just want people to forget history when it is convient for your side. Let's say we wiped the slate clean on all wrong doings of the 20th century. Is that fair enough?

  • @darkoanton5

as you say rights right & wrongs wrong,we

cant erase the horrors of he past, just

learn from them. i dont want to argue about

something i wasnt part of. so lets leave it at

that or we'll be here forever xx

  • @1vatersay Yes.

  • This is to rabbithog the coward. I know you are looking to get a reaction and you got one. Many people starved to death in the famine you scumbag. Get a life....

  • you get a life too, but not here in england the country has had enough of you

  • Excuse me Rabbithog you ignorant racist bastard ....im Irish and I can assure Im not stupid .....get a mirror in yours and look in it....HELLO THICKO

  • i bet you are from mayo, or your fathers are

  • My body cold and hungry,in Parkhurst jail I lie,

For the loving of my country,on hunger strike I die,

I have just one last longing,I pray you'll not deny,

Bury me in Mayo, beneath an Irish sky.

    What do have against Mayo?

  • it always amuses how those who hate a race sit around in there mum's basement listening to our music. Get a life.

  • @rabbithog

rabbithog lets not stoop to that

    level, remember wev'e moved on

    and grown more civilised x

  • OHHH Baby, Let the Free Birds Fly.....

  • What a simply beautiful song and wonderful voice, but the video cuts off half way through, volume is exceptional, really strong voice. Go Paddy Reilly!

  • Comment removed

  • Is this about Rupert Murdoch?

  • best irish song ever

  • Your description's not right. Paddy Reilly left The Dubliners in 2005. Great song though.

  • Top Song

  • Brillant song, especially at Celtic park on

    a cold European Night,

    BVB & CELTIC FOR EVER

  • Lovely....very, very nice version, with just the right note of poignancy. I can barely sing this one without bursting into tears.

Thank you for this beautiful rendition.

  • beautiful song and beautifully sung.

  • Dont steal tins of corn.

  • Only if you were starving back in 1845 when there was nothing to feed your little babies, and you had to look at their still, grey faces, gaunt, and lifeless. That's when you risked prison for the sake of your family, that meant the world to you. Patronising aren't you, don't you think !

    Jo Sparkes

    6/1/2009

  • Yes I am aware of that too, I am not so stupid as to not know that there is always a wider picture. But sometimes a song will portray in the only way that music can do, the sadness and pathos that existed for the Irish people during that dark time in their history. I am merely pointing out that I am aware of that time.I am also aware of other times of misery, too many to mention here, are you ? ?, or are you too busy criticising others' observations !

    Jo Sparkes

    Norfolk

    7/1/2009

  • You made a comment on my post not me on you. Maybe you have a problem with "criticising".

Typical Irish response when it comes to the famine.

5.4 plus million die on both sides in the Vietnam war, I bet you did not know that, yet everyone should know or care about the Irish and the famine, typical.

By the way criticising others is also a part of YouTube Joe, if you have a problem with it then set up a club JUST for you and others with the same view.

  • I swear, the toughest, most opinionated people in the world sit in front of a screen.

  • And your where right now? lol

    What a dope.

  • This has nothing to do with Vietnam, Walter !!!

  • How clever you are, it's also nothing to do with Spain, Rupert. lol

  • It can easily be transpoes to the orange groves or Spain during that sad civil war when volunteers from all over came to fight for ideology or perhaps for a better world . Tha republicans had a long wail for victory. Viva comrades!

  • Victory........British soldiers are still their, the North is still part of the UK and the IRA are all on the dole. They laid down their weapons pal.

  • Sorry I meant the Spanish republicans, even there the Basques are waiting to be free. It's all relative and I do understand when you talk about people ending up on the dole after thirty odd years of fighting. It took an age before everyone got round the tables it is inevitable. Look towards Afghanistan what is going to happen there? Regards and best wishes for the new year,

  • It is an inside job anyways... all false flag ops to keep the tyranny going, sad but true.

  • You are a stupid cunt! This song has nothing to do with the fact that Northern Ireland is still occupied. And you spelled THERE wrong!

  • The fact that all have suffered does not diminish the suffering of one. All peoples of all times have been subject to abuse and depredations. Most weave their tales of woe in song and poetry. The Irish have every right to bemoan their misfortune and you have every duty to show forbearance. Move on? Perhaps it would be best. Forget? Never. These are lessons which man has yet to learn. And those who do not wish to hear them, have not learned.

  • you brit sucm bag hope your ma gets ass raped and left too rot in a dark lane some place dirty hun cunt

  • Now now, dont let us have to give you a slap.

  • a great song , not like the vile rubbish you hear at rangers games.those poeple are scum.

  • WOW there are some angry people out there, relax you might live longer LOL

I just adore irish music, and have been listening to it the last week or two. I have become quite addicted to it.Paddy Reilley has the voice of an angel, as has Peggy Sweeney.

  • sex on fire

  • you wish

  • nice one paddy from the heart

  • I love this song. Dont matter who sings it.

  • Factnotfictionpeople

    I agree

  • I am English and enjoy the song whilst being aware of the background. I have lived in SW Ireland and have found the ordinary Irish forgiving and forgetful of the past as we must forget our British past and look towards a good future for our children.

  • whatever

  • The Dropkick Murphys version is alright but it doesn't compare to this.

  • Weejonny

Yer fukin hun bastard Fuk off home ya murdering brit bastard wit ye listening to irish music fur if yar hun !

  • and the same to you ass hole paddy

  • decent version that's traditional. great song, ahh the days of belting it out at rugby matches...

and if you don't like the song at least explain why, otherwise it's just pointless

  • What a bunch of twats - this song is a piece of shit.

  • hey mate you just insulted a whole race of people. this song is about a struggle to survive during the famine and its results. this is probably the single most song that every irish person will know (even more than the national anthem) so go listen to a better version of the song before you say something ignorant like that again.....slán

  • While I have to admit to this song not being my cup of tea (nothing to do with the words or it's meaning, I prefer more upbeat dance music) I have to defend myself by telling you that someone rather drunk person was using my computer and posted the insult above and I know he didn't really mean it because his girlfriend is from Cork.

    Sorry about that.

  • Don't really understand the comments about Aussies being Brit criminals.....haven't you listened to the lyrics? Actually the majority of Aussies are descendants from Irish people who were deemed to be criminals by the English, later followed up by English criminals who were sent there.

  • Go raibh mile maith agat

  • I vow from this time forward NEVER to make another comment on youtube due to the abusive eejits who think they are the kings shit and call everyone down when they make a mistake ..his is so not fucking worth it ..and colummcclelland90 go shite up a stick...

  • haha whatever. your post was away off Australian, Irish... theres no comparasion whatsoever

  • no such tings as australians, they were all brithish criminals.....now suck that boy

  • paddys awesome at this

  • this is one of my favorite songs of all time, hands down. st. john was a talented poet.

  • brilliant man. we got some good songs here in kernow about battling the english too

  • its a great song that binds the Irish and teh heritage

  • Great song, Paddy Reillys a true legend

  • wonderful comment on a draconian oligacharchy has it canged? No ther still a bunch of of inerbred english shits

  • Go chris alexander

  • great song . my old uncle (paddy)r.i.p used to say... their's more fecking songs written about ireland you'ed think its was the only fecking country in the world. to which my father would reply.. "god bless you ireland and the old bog road... go on paddy sing us a song. happy memories!

  • ~ irish and proud ~

  • A song is a song. fucking pisses me off when people make it about the divide between cath's and prod's. This is prolly one of the greatest songs ever written and fucking idots have to smear it with politics. FUCK OFF

  • I was agreeing with you chris, keep the politics out, everybodys had some shit at one time or another, nobody has the sole right for sympathy and the world would be a better place without religion and the one-up-man-ship most of its followers try to get. Surely this song is about the sadness brought on a family by being deported for petty crime? The Lancashire folk songs I mention are taken and enjoyed in their original context and "Ther reyt fettling tackle" as we say up here

  • Seriously lads, yas are English, of course you want to keep the politics out of a song about our fellers fighting against yours. It's a rebel song like the lad below says, how in the fuck can you keep the 'politics out' of it?

  • This song is a rebel song, against the english, so how can it not be political.

One of the nicest songs in the world, and it is a political song, whether you like it or not.

  • You might be surprised, sweetheart

  • I hear ya! We can only do our part by accepting and showing a loving hand or simple gesture towards humanity( yep,we're all the same in that lable).I pray it's making a difference. Idiotic and pointless hate will destroy us.inevitable!.These songs were born of pain, unspeakable sorrow, and insight,in hopes to make a change for the better.

  • This is a song about the famine - and it's Malthusian use to allow as many Irish people die as possible. It is also about transportation (when the English made use of convict slave labour in their empire) - if that's not political i know not what is, it's also about love/loss of country and loss of familly.

  • Good historical song(and I'm English)but spoilt by the political, kick the Brits messages.

The landlord situation happened here.Working class Lancashire where I'm from is a far cry from chocolate box England everybody envisages&its people were cruelly exploited by landowners/mine owners/mill owners who ran the MP's.Plenty of songs about cotton, coal&its hardships. There always has been&always will be "Them who has and them who hasn't" but we didn't have MP's to protect a minority like some did!

  • Great comment mate i'm Irish it's a fucking disgrace what people are saying on here both irish and english what has happened, happened can't change history.

  • It sure is

  • Top version of a fine tune

  • Please take the time to view my slide show of the Irish Famine Memorial that was recently dedicated in Providence, Rhode Island USA. It was just by chance that I found Paddy Reilly's version of "Fields of Anthenry" to use as background music. Search Bobping3. Thanks...Bob

  • nothing quite gets the english going like singing this song at full pelt on the top floor of a bulgarian hotel inhabited mostly be english and sung by a scotsman in a kilt - ha ha !!!

  • Beautiful dark song.

Ireland one day will be one....

  • I love very much this song, and I would like have the entire writing of. Let me know how

  • it was written by an australian called Pete St John

  • what shit are you talking, Pete St John is Irish you Muppet... let me guess... yup an american that knows fuk all

  • OK I made a big fucking mistake (american me)??? fucking hardly boy you couldnt win a contest if you tried I am NO American..

  • it was violence and murder unfortunately that took to get the brits out, talking did'nt work, after 700 years this was the only option. M.

  • the sad truth

  • I love this song

  • fuck off you fucking wanker paddy is a legend

  • fuck off you fucking wanker paddy is a legend

  • Oh come on, guys. There is no need to fight.

Even I, as a german, love this song and don't think of it as an offence to anyone.

  • Opinion polls normaly say whatever the people who commisioned them paid for them to say thats normal..... 5.2 million died in the systematic starvation of a nation. 1845 - 1850 We learn and move on.. the blame game is for fools.. shit...no other song gets my throat like this one!

  • people stop fighting, this is an amazing song which everyone can enjoy

  • away i have been taken for the last 30 years on the 2nd of january, too aunty Marys this is for you but the memories remain mine!!

  • tumalty,--I surrender. How could anyone interpret the lyrics"against the famine and the CROWN,I rebelled ,they ran me down"as being political.

  • Why are people getting all political with their responses to this song. It has nothing to do with politics. Its about someone being deported to Australia after he was caught steeling during the potatoe famin No politics involved

  • because politics, both Irish and English, exacerbated the problems caused by the famine. The Famine could have been absorbed by our population, but the near slavery of English land-owner's, combined with an arm's legnth approach but Irish Upper class, only servered to prmotoe emigration and hardship. Fields of Anthenrye is not directly a politcal statement as The Dubliners were always a strictly neutral bunch.

  • You are evidently neither Irish or no nothing of Irish history. The man was trying to keep his family from starving while food was being exported to England.

  • Look at my surname my family are from Cork
