To her, this song is about feeling safe and content with someone. Listen to her voice. It's fragile. She's singing about being vulnerable to someone.
With the original, it's different. It's about shielding the one you love from the worst of you.
The two versions sound so different because the ideas behind them are so different.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs made a brave and risky move covering this song. It is so n incredibly powerful when Bjork sings it. However I respect that Karren has made it relevant to herself, put her own spin on a beautiful story. I think if they had used the same power as Bjork people would still hate it because lets face it only Bjork can do Bjork, but Karen has done a good job and an obvious connection to the song which led her to sing it as her own. hmm. while i like both YYY and bjork, somehow this doesn't quite work. hyperballad has so much energy and disturbing undertones that don't come through in this version at all.
I kind of like the acoustic arrangement they came up with, good performance. Hyperballad, being such an electronic song, is near impossible to arrange on acoustic and keep the substance of the notes, i know because i tried years ago and failed miserably! Ended up making an original arrangement like they did here, its less stripped down, but by no means spectacular.
This cover is very, surreal, like she is singing this while she is doing it, like she is up early in the morning, still kinda groggy, but still able to see and say how she feels.
i really like the way this sounds, the original from bjork was really good too, but this sounds different like it wasnt from bjork and i llike that, karen put a unique song and sang it the way she wanted to :)

I'm a huge Bjork fan and I thought this was pretty awesome.
Much like Bjork, Karen O's voice is def. not for everyone but I 'get' it and I totally dig it.

that's what people don't seem to get about a cover. it's just that. a cover. they're not trying to recreate the original, they're taking the song and singing it from their hearts, making it their own. that's what a cover is. so maybe this isn't like the original, but it's still beautiful.

I love it! but don't see it as a cover. Just see it as a different song with coincidentally the same lyrics. :D A lot of the hating will disappear.

I really like it. I love Bjork's version and I won't forget the emotion it stirred in me when I first heard it. The YYY's put their spin on it, and you can definitely feel the YYY's... it's just a strange juxtaposition of musical monoliths.
Still... Respect. To be the YYY's, and know Bjork as I'm sure they do, and try this with a small set and pull it off like this. Damn.

You're all stupid. I like both, I just think as an artist, Bjork has had more time in the business. I don't think YYYs are bad, I just don't think they're as influential as Bjork. I still really love this cover, the YYYs, and Bjork. They didn't ruin this song, it's called interpretation and it's lovely. This is a form of flattery towards Bjork.

Thank you hoodempire. You're a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Here's a guy with a YouTube page who has uploaded no original content. It's mostly Hip-hop songs playing over a single picture. And he's watching YYY's videos when he doesn't like YYY's. hoodempire = not very smart.
