Ty Cobb" was originally titled "Hot Rod Death Toll", but the lyrics reminded Shepherd of the infamous baseball player Ty Cobb. He holds the all-time career batting record (.367), but he is also well-known for his womanizing, alcoholism and racism.
America should have placed Ty Cobbs at the folda gap at the Berlin wall.
When the Soviets came in, Ty Cobbs would intimidate the fuck out of them just so he can steal third with a slide. All the while screaming, "Fuck you and your Communism" as he continued to terrorize the USSR.
Ty Cobb hated every race, including most of his own. The face that he hated blacks is totally irrelevant. You do realize almost all of Africa is completely racist still to this day don't you?
i wish they would make a whole punk album like this. because this is so awesome. on every major label album there is only one punk song in each album :(
Im black and im a baseball and Soundgarden fan and YES Ty Cobb was a racist becuz he had money and political influence but I loved his style of play and he was a badass motherfucker and nobody fucked with him and for the record Ty Cobb didnt like anybody
@shawn3975 I dream of the day when people are judged by their character and not the color of their skin But as long as there are people like you in this world that aint gonna happen Just stating that i like Ty Cobbs style of play and even though he was a mean spirited man I am a fan, and with him it wasnt about just race HE DIDNT LIKE PEOPLE AT ALL and this song suits his attitude towards ALL people baseball fans and Soundgarden fans agreed with my comment deal with it
@Sn4pDr4gon Ok, giving you the benefit of the doubt, sorry I over-reacted my bad. Next time someone calls me a bitch for no reason I'll just think about this song, or a plumber, and laugh it off, which is down with me, this is by far the best song SG ever made. Peace brah
Hahahaha! Yeah..super sorry. I didn't mean to offend you by that. I just thought you were a die-hard baseball fan like myself. That was the only reason I commented the way I did. Plus, I forgot the obligatory smiley...so all the "bad" rests on me. Peace out my good man.
@Sn4pDr4gon Right on, and I'm a baseball fan too. Go Cardinals biatch :) Rose was awesome but he played over 500 more games and surpassed Cobb by only 65 hits. I feel TyC would still have the hits record if he played on the fake turf, even with less games. His career batting average was unreal.
I completely agree. Even though "Charlie Hustle" was awesome...no doubts...with that quickened turf my best guess would have been another 200 - 300 hits...and I think that is being conservative. I'm actually a Twins fan from Minnesota - Sorry about that whole 1987 thing :) - but have been a Cardinals supporter ever since that series. The Cards have done two amazing things..1.) The majority of the championships they won they took from the Yankees dynasty era..and 2.)....cont
....they have won 100 + games in a season 8 TIMES. Two monumental feats for any ball club. Not to mention they are usually always a contender (except for the very lean times in the early 90's and one spot in the 1970's). The Cardinals management and farm club are just as solid as the Twins in those respects if not way more so given the history. (The twins being a small market team able to win 2 championships and be a playoff staple for the last 6 years or so).
@Sn4pDr4gon Lol too weird! I've been a lifelong Card fan but Twins are my AL team. I used to be a big Puckett and Gagne fan. Yeah I was on the temper tantrum side of 87, but it was a great series and I was young and irritable. I like Gardenhire, and often vision him wearing birds and a bat on his chest when LaRussa decides to go. :) Wont happen but I think RG and Leyland are arguably the two best managers. You're right Cards are Twins win cheap and primarily inhouse, that's another......
@Sn4pDr4gon .....reason I pull for the Twins in the AL still, they do it the anti-Yankee way, and still compete most every year. But man it's getting harder and harder to win like that. Cardinals are finding out right now with AP, it sucks. Anyhow good luck this year, I'll be following both Central divisions, like usual.
I imagine, at the beginning of the song, an old southern plantation with a Colonel Sanders lookin dude sitting out on his porch smoking a pipe in his rocking chair and some hick guy with a banjo sitting on the steps playing. Then when the ROCK hits, ya see a close-up profile of ole' Sanders, and a combat boot kicks him in the side of the head. Then, there they are, Soundgarden, and then shit starts blowing up. And the banjo guy, released from his obligation as a cliche, starts to play with them.

But Cobb was a product of his generation, Georgia like Mississippi and Alabama were some of the most dangerous places for blacks.
@mfbinc where is there evidence that he didn't think blacks should have the same freedom as whites? he built a whole neighborhood for low income minorities so that they didn't live in squalor. there was a book written by a negro league player in which he talks of an aging, pleasant cobb giving him advice on how to make it to the pros. using "nigger" is not racism, just prejudice.
@mfbinc Good points... But "Nigger" is racist. Racism is an outright offensive statement/act aimed at a certian culture/ethnicity, whereas prejudice is making wrong assumptions (following stereotypes) based on their culture/ethnicity. "Nigger" isn't an assumption...

Ty Cobb was a player during the deadball era that holds a batting average higher then anyone else (even higher then people with the advantage of new rules, aluminum bats, and balls actually being replaced). He pretty much kicked ass at baseball, but was also kind of an asshole.
If you think Ty Cobb was an asshole you should see Rogers Hornsby who was Cobb's usual opponent in the triple crown race... Rogers Hornsby was an active member of the KKK
@havee3333333 Didn't know that about Hornsby, looked it up and it's apparently true. Some sports writers even said he was as mean if not meaner than Cobb.
Oh well, all these guys lived and died before my time. The worst I've had to deal with when it comes to my more recent baseball heroes is finding out they'd been on steroids for years, Palmeiro, especially, he'd was my favorite for years. (Still not sure what to believe about Puckett, that one SI article made him sound horrible :-( ).

There's a difference between proud of race, and spitting in the hands of black players. That was Cobb.

sorry if im clueless but what is this?

(Still not sure what to believe about Puckett, that one SI article made him sound horrible :-( ).

my friend and i were so happy to hear chris play this song at one of his shows over the summer.

This song is just bleeding with energy. And I love the hillbilly theme. That's something Soundgarden usually did, they'd give their songs themes.
