....they have won 100 + games in a season 8 TIMES. Two monumental feats for any ball club. Not to mention they are usually always a contender (except for the very lean times in the early 90's and one spot in the 1970's). The Cardinals management and farm club are just as solid as the Twins in those respects if not way more so given the history. (The twins being a small market team able to win 2 championships and be a playoff staple for the last 6 years or so).

Yeah I was on the temper tantrum side of 87, but it was a great series and I was young and irritable. I like Gardenhire, and often vision him wearing birds and a bat on his chest when LaRussa decides to go. :) Wont happen but I think RG and Leyland are arguably the two best managers. You're right Cards are Twins win cheap and primarily inhouse, that's another......

Although Ty Cobb was indeed a racist (as were the vast majority of rural whites born in Georgia in 1888), more than anything he was just a nasty MF to people of all races.

He was well known in baseball for sharpening his spikes before games in order to slash the hell out of opposing players who tried to tag him out. One of the most famous pictures of Cobb shows him leaping in the air to plant his spikes right in the crotch of the catcher.

Therefore the song fits him perfectly.

Ty Cobb was a player during the deadball era that holds a batting average higher then anyone else (even higher then people with the advantage of new rules, aluminum bats, and balls actually being replaced). He pretty much kicked ass at baseball, but was also kind of an asshole.
