Best version I've found so far. Faithful to the score, AND it actually follows the original lyrics, unlike the version I currently have (performed by the Halle Orchestra in England)
At last I found the version with the complete lyrics, most versions only have the "Slagt ham! Kristenmands søn har dåret Dovregubbens veneste mø! Slagt ham!" part. IMO this is the best one.
I don't know if your description is accurate...the last 4 versions I've just pulled up on youtube all had a choir at the end...now, I'm desperately trying to find a purely orchestral version...which I prefer.
@alternatehistories It was accurate when I uploaded this, two and a half years ago. There was not more than two or three versions up with the original choir and all were in very bad quality. And I dare say you're exaggerating when you say you're "desperately" trying to find an instrumental version; I just searched the title and the second video I checked was instrumental.
To me, this song is made all the more powerful and fierce by the choir in it and the meaning of the lyrics:
Chorus: Slay him! The Christian's son has bewitched
The Mountain King's fairest daughter! x2
Slay him! x4
Chorus: May I hack him on the fingers? May I tug him by the hair? Hu, hey, let me bite him in the haunches! Shall he be boiled into broth and bree to me Shall he roast on a spit or be browned in a stewpan? Ice to your blood!
I'm not sure if this has already been queried but, does anyone have a link to the version without the choir? i don't very much care for the choir just the instrumental masterpiece.
I've been looking for this version since seeing the Golden Sun commercial years ago. To find the choral version, even with lyrics is a stroke of fantasy. <3
I never knew what this music was titled. I've heard it all my life on television and in the movies. I finally heard it identified on a classical music station in the car and came home to search for it online. Thanks! This was beautiful!
@tali3n It's supposed to be like that IN THE BEGINNING!!!! Listen to the whole piece; a great part of what's genius in this piece lies in the constantly growing tension (which is accompanied by the constantly growing volume) that leads up to the climax.
Aaah, so someone else has this version of HotMK! It always sounds weird to me when they play this without the chorus, or the random norwegian(?) lines in the end.
@Nibor7301 I agree. I was brought up with this version and I didn't hear the piece without choir till I was, like, 12. Do you have the same version or just another version with choir? Because if you have this one I am most interested in knowing who the performers are, if you by any chance happen to know that.
@moltoallegro19 Yes, that exact recording. I'd recognise those voices anywhere. Sadly, it's in a CD that contains only a few excerpts from the complete recording, so the only info on performers I can find is:
Gösta Ohlin's Vocal Ensemble
Pro Musica Chamber Choir
Plus a soprano (Barbara Bonney) and mezzo-soprano (Marianne Eklöf) that don't sing in this track.
@Nibor7301 Wow, thanks, really! So many people have asked for who the performers are, but, unfortunatly, I've been unable to answer since the CD I got this from doesn't mention the names of any orchestras or performers. Thank you very much.
Oh.. Thank you for posting the translation ! I tried to get my Norwegian Father-In-Law & his sister to translate it but they couldn't make out the words. As for the shouting man.. maybe someone will fill us in...
Slagt ham! Kristenmands søn har dåret. Dovregubbens veneste mø! (x2) Slagt ham! Slagt ham! (x2) (All the above one more time) Slagt ham! Skal jeg skjære ham i fingren? (Slagt ham!) Rive ham i håret! (Slagt ham!) Hu, hei, la meg bite ham i låret! (Slagt ham!) Skal han lages til sodd og sø? (Slagt ham!) Skal han steikast på spyd eller brunes i gryte?(Slagt ham!) Isvand i blodet!
I am sorry to to say that I actually have no idea who's playing this. I got this track from a collection called "Greatest Hits of the Classics" from Tring International PLC (licenced from Long Island Music CO.) and no names of conductors, orchestras or performers are mentioned:(
Hehe, allright, I'll try to tell you as much as I can: The box contains 4 CD's. The first one includes Ravel's Bolero, Orff's Carmina Burana, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries, Rossini's Wilhelm Tell overture and Vivaldi's "Spring". The second contains Beethoven's moonlight sonata (the first movement), The second mvt of Dvorak's 9th symphony, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Tale of the Kalendar Prince" from Scheherzade, a few exerpts from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake...
... theme and variations from Schubert's "trout quintet", Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", Rimsky'Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and Vivaldi's "Summer". The third is the first mvt of Beethoven's 5th symphony, "Morning" and this track from "Peer Gynt" by Grieg, Glinka Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla, Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky, an exerpt from Beethoven's 9th, Radetzky March by Strauss, the entire Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart and Vivaldi's "Autumn"...
...and the 4th is Pachelbel's Canon, Largo from Händel's "Xerxes", Air on a G string by Bach, Albinoni's famous Adagio in G minor, Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto, exerpts from Holst's "The Planets"; Mars and Jupiter and finally Vivaldi's "Winter". According to the cover the box is a "Tring Production" (Tring International PLC) Licensed from Long Island Music Co LTD. That is all information there is to find on the box, nothing about performers or conductors or anything like that. Hope I helped.
Slay him! The Christian's son has bewitched The Mountain King's fairest daughter! Slay him! Slay him! May I hack him on the fingers? May I tug him by the hair? (The troll-courtiers): Slagt ham! Kristenmands søn har dåret. Dovregubbens veneste mø! Slagt ham! Slagt ham! (a troll-imp): Må jeg skjære ham i fingeren? (another troll-imp): Må jeg rive ham i håret? (a troll-maiden): Hu, hej, lad mig bide ham i låret! (a troll-witch with a ladle): Skal han lages til sod og sø? (another troll-witch, with a butcher knife): Skal han steges på spid eller brunes i gryde? (the Mountain King): Isvand i blodet!
The chorus makes this piece WAY more epic. Sounds like a satanic chant, which suits the evil theme of this piece perfectly. The first time I heard this piece with chorus, since I usually heard it without it, it actually scared me.
It is so much more powerful with the chorus, but hearing this gives me chills no matter what. I am not a fan of classical as a genre, but this is like a rock song to me--it's so intense.
Speaking of rock, I remember seeing a televised Boston Pops concert where Penn and Teller did an escape act on stage. The timing of their escape was such that they were able to accompany the Pops on electric guitars through the part that begins at the crest of the accelerando (circa 2:21 in this recording)
the sound is so low, but the piece is more than wonderful.........it's true, it's better with a choir in it. without a choir is nice but not as beautiful
Thank you/ Merci !
