Wow - 42,000 views! Thanks everybody! I just added some links to diagrams in the video details so you don't have to go hunting around the web for this info
This is about the best demo I've ever seen to demo pickups. You're playing is great. The sound quality is clear and understandable. The camera clearly shows your every move as you switch between settings. Thanks for such a great demo. Duncan should use this on their website and ever other person doing a demo on YouTube should learn from your video!!!
@mjt11860: It's open G (D bass) DGDGBD - @SayNOtoFluorideLEGIT: no mods on the Fender Champ. Old Stock Sylvania power tube, JJ preamp tubes. I think the pots on this guitar are all 500k, the amp's pots are stock.
Do you have a wiring diagram for doing four push-pulls? The Duncan site only has plans for two push pulls in a four pot guitar, and I've got two extra Pulls lying around...
@L2112Lif Look into the triple shot mounting ring with built in switches. you will get more pickup combinations with them. p-rail/p90/series humbucker/parallel humbucker - and in the middle position you can combo neck p-90 bridge rails and so forth. worth the money and get the most out of these pickups.
Hi I know by this time you have sold the guitar already but would you still remember the wiring and could you pm the wiring diagram on all 3 demos pls? thanks in advance
Hi I know by this time you have sold the guitar already but would you still remember the wiring and could you pm the wiring diagram pls? thanks in advance
Hey man, this is really a nice demo. You also have a great slide picking style.
I'm a true "Joe Barden" fan, I already have 2 guitars equiped with "Joe Barden" PUs and home made (deranged) wiring, one has 2 Two-Tones humbuckers, the other 3 Strat PUs.
I don't usually pay a lot of attention to PU demos but I got to your demo after listening to a guy playing on a Godin Icon model equiped with P-Rails, and these PUs really impress me.
I once had an old SG Special 64' with 2 P90s, and I really loved the sound of these PUs.
But now, this combination is really hot stuff, like having a P90 and a humbucker all in one.
I'm scratching my head, see if I'm going to get myself a nice guitar "base" to set these PUs on ...
Hi Lyon, I just odered a Custom Build Tele with two P-Rails! Your sound is fantastic and your playing even better!
Back here in Germany there are but a few guitar players that do that style, and I'd love to learn that. Can you give a list of recommended listening? Whats the general name of that style?
Buy It Now is no longer available after the first bid. Bidding is open and the guitar will now go to the highest bidder. Auction ends Sunday July 4th. Good luck!
No - actually I installed these switches before they came up with that product. They control the phase and series/parallel options while the P-Rails are controlled by the push-pull pots.
how hard would it be to put these on a les paul without the coil switching pots, so how hard would it be to make a normal non-coil tapping guitar work with these pickups? how much money?
Do you think it would be a good tone to wire the neck pup with the same orientation as the bridge pup? compensating the wiring to match (and suit), of course...
Thanks for the kind words everybody! I am thinking of selling this guitar and I am sending out feelers to see what kind of interest there is. (Email me if you have an offer). The wiring could be put back to the way it was, but those pickup selector switches weren't that reliable, so I put them on 4 push pulls. This sacrificed the individual control of each coil so now it's both P90s/both parallel/both series/both rails. But nearly all the same tones are available.
This video is basically the gold standard for tone-test videos on YouTube. 90% of gear demos are just distorted crap where the tone is unrecognizable. Thank you!
Thanks for the nice words everybody! I've been making pedals under the moniker station audio. You can find me on facebook. Or search for my Sparkle Punch tube boost pedal on YouTube or eBay.
You think that with the use of 2 push pull pots I could access the 4 p-rails sounds (series hum, parallel hum, p-90 , single rail) AND split a different humbucker as well ?
love those tones ... lotsa versatility ... but i gotta say, man ... you got tone to the bone in your fingers ... very soulful chops/phrasing ... for other folks reading this, the seymour duncan triple shot pickup rings would let those tones come out in another way instead of push/pulls
Dude your playing has inspired me to learn how to play side guitar, no bullshit man, your a hell of a player! Im getting these put in my esp viper, and am ditching my emg 81's, I want my guitar to sound luike a guitar again, and you proved that it can happen! Thanks so much man, and email me, id dig to chat about some custom pedals!
Thanks for all the positive comments! Lately I've been making guitar effects pedals. Go to facebook, search for Station Audio and become a fan! I make fuzz pedals, overdrive pedals, boosters, tremolo, vibrato, delay, you name it. Keep an eye out for a demo of my new Leslie rotating speaker simulator.
Thanks man! glad you like it. most of my gigs have been for the clarinet, I haven't been been playing out on guitar much so I'm glad you like it. Oh and to twiz: I did wire the selector backwards - so I would have the bridge controls closer to my right hand. I have since reversed it since I play with a volume pedal most of the time anyway.
Very cool idea - kudos for experimenting. I guess you probably get less stratty quack and more tele twang in that rail/middle position. I'll have to try that out.
Great slide playing, I have the same pickups but I reversed the pickups so the Rails are on the outside and what a difference in sound. More clarity with the Rails and you can get an almost Tele sound with both pickups.
Doode, you must be a CooderHolic like me! Our Playing is very simular. I have told some of my students to watch these ids just to hear great playing. Your technique is awesome and tones are right on the mark.
Thanks to everybody for their interest and compliments. Check out the forums at the seymour duncan website. You can find plenty of information regarding the wiring I used. For my circuit I pieced together parts of different diagrams I found around the site.
If you want 4 push/pulls you could put the phase and series settings on 2 switches and the pickup selector on the other two. The only downside is that you have to select each pickup the same way at all times (both P90, both rail, etc.)
Wow!! That was an awesome demo with the slide and the out of phase setting is a great mod. I didn't see that in the Seymour Duncan website. These pickups can do any tone :)
Not sure if my first post made it. Sounds awesome, lyon! Is your wiring configuration included in the Seymour packaging of the pickups? (I just purchased a set --- being shipped as we speak). If your wiring (of all four pots being push-pull) is not included in packaging, would you be willing to send me a diagram of your wiring set-up? Also, it almost looks like you have a 3-way toggle under your bridge pickup --- is that what I'm seeing? Cheers, Papa John.
Nice demo - every single one of those settings sounded great. Particularly dig how the higher output from the series mode adds a little grit to your amp.
I really don't like this kind of music but you are really playing good. Respect to the skill. You get more attention then pickups:)
