@StreamFeverNZ A knife is only good if you are in the same physical condition as the criminal. A person with a few years on them may have a difficult time defending themselves against a teenager bent on mayhem.

Different guns for different situations. I like a carbine like an AK for my at-home gun because I don't have to lug it around all the time. A shotgun with a shorter barrel is also a great option (I just know the AK better at this point).
Obviously they're not practical for trips to the mall, though.

You see, you guys are funny. Think about this - Everyone says "We need guns to defend ourselves." Now, if handguns were illegal full stop then the bad guys can't get one as easy also. Sure a shotgun would be great if someone breaks into your place > but what if that person just bought a BIGGER gun. It's a never ending circle with you gun nuts. I live in Australia and we very rarely have shootings - America has them everyday. Just some food for thought.
Making firearms of any type illegal only prevents law abiding citizens from owning them for self defense. Drunk drivers, knives, and blunt force weapons kill more people than firearms every year.
To buy a gun, all you need to do is fill out some paper work and demonstrate proper firearm safety.
If you want to buy a gun to conceal on your person legally, then depending if it is even possible (depends on your local Sheriff/PD), you need to take a CCW class and receive a certificate. And then buy an approved firearm to carry.
The waiting period for your license to arrive can be a bitch, though.

But my argument for handguns in the home for defense is simple.. Handguns are very easy to keep secure AND readily available for quick access.
I havent found a safe way to keep my shotgun withing arms reach and loaded while also keeping it safe from my children.
Where the handgun is easily safely stored while being loaded.
I have heard people say the handgun is for getting to their shotgun/rifle for home defense.
