  • OMG! the dialogue is priceless!

  • I love this movie! On page 75 of the book, Wharton has the Lily Bart character say, ""Ah, you are as bad as the other sectarians." she exclaimed; "why do you call your republic a republic? It is a close corporation, and you create arbitrary objections in order to keep people out." She has the Eric Stoltz character reply, "It is not my republic; if it were, I should have a coup d'etat and seat you on the throne." Wharton Knew what most Americans STILL do not know! It happened in 1871.

  • Devastating film. It really illustrates how fragile lives are. Chills me to the bone.

  • I adore this movie almost as much as the book. It's the only movie that has made me cry and cry and cry some more.

  • @emilyautumn6 If you still have the book, look towards the bottom of page 75 to see the exchange in which she has the Eric Stoltz and the Lily Bart characters engage. The book was written in 1905 but copyrighted and published in Am. in 1964. Most Americans STILL don't know that this coup d'etat took place in 1871. Edith clearly was aware of the distinction.

  • I sometimes think about this scene, and in particular, this line, which to me suggests Lily's struggle between the external quality of dignity and the internal quality of rectitude. What's sad is that she's pretty much lost the battle by this point. The interesting thing to me is that the line isn't in the novel (Ch. IX ends with the line about doing credit to her training). Maybe it was in an earlier draft? Can anyone explain its origin?

  • What an awesome scene! I'm going to have to watch the movie again now.

  • excellent movie.....one of my favourites ever...

  • Amazing!

I STILL can't believe Gillian didn't get Oscar nomination for that role. :/

  • @FranceGall4Ever @FranceGall4Ever I know! Such a shame this got snubbed at the Oscars for whatever reason. There were more major releases that were given more support that year, but also Terence Davies has never gotten the recognition as a director that he ought to have, and really, for this movie both him and especially Gillian Anderson (and the rest of the cast, who in fairness give great performances) should've gotten a nod. GA especially. She brought Lily to life.

  • this scene made the movie for me. both of their performances reach their full potential here.

  • At this point in the story, Lily is poor, all her friends have left her, Selden has more or less spurned her, and she has no money. Her only means of support is the woman she is working for. She is fighting for her life, and he is trying to take her away from it. No one, in crisis, can maintain a facade of "cold and unattainable", two words that I would not associate with this situation at all.

  • Yep. At this point in the movie Lily has shed all her facades, all her social masks, and G's interpretation makes it clear.

  • gillian is having her British accent. :P Mann, she's great. As well as Eric too.

  • Ooh one of my favourite scenes! Such a fabulous movie and Gillian and Eric are wonderful.

  • This is my favorite scene in the movie.

  • I love this movie !!! Highly recommended.

  • This was a modern interpretation that was true to the spirit of Wharton's character. Gillian did a fantastic job.

  • To be honest, I didn't think Lily Bart would have barked out her words like Gillian did. She seems a bit too angry, instead of cold and unattainable.

  • @munchkin0518 I agree. I'm reading the book now and GA sounds way harsh, especially considering the time period.

  • @munchkin0518 How would YOU be in her position? Cold and unattainable at THAT point? I think angry.
