  • Hi rounder....

    this is a great arrangement..

I have also learned the green onions you did on the Yamaha, a year or so back by carefully watching your vid.

Once I was able to do the walking base line with the right hand, i learned it fairly quickly.

Would you say that this version of BEW should be roughly the same difficulty level?

  • Hi tangoaplha

    Thanks!

This version of Baby Elephant Walk has a more difficult left hand (e.g. with anticipation before some bars), compared to my Yamaha Green Onions version.

But, and this is a very important 'but' :-) Since you have learned/ingrained one left hand bass line pattern, you will also have "learned how to learn". This means that your learning curve will be faster for the next walking bass line pattern, if it's not totally more difficult. So go for it!

  • Henry would approve, I'm sure.

Thanks for an excellent performance/arrangement.... and so MUCH information on how it was done. (Very generous of spirit.)

  • Thanks effyleven!

Good to hear that you also like my additional text. I provide extra text for my videos in case it might be of help regarding sound settings, drawbar registrations, etc.

  • Holy crap! I must become like you!!

  • Hi Wimpy Fruit

    Thanks!

Start by learning the boogie woogie left hand bass line, until it is totally ingrained and you hardly have to think about it.

Then start adding the right hand. Phrase after phrase. But always keep the left hand in control.

The left hand is the Boss in jazz organ.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Search the internet and you will soon discover that rounder2u is the only person in existence with one of these organs.

  • Hi mrslig

    Is that so?

Maybe it is because of me scaring away prospective customers :-)

  • Also, how about some Manzarek?

  • Hi SkynyrdKidd

The legendary Ray Manzarek? Well, there is already a truckload on my shortlist, and only so much time...

And I will also admit that I'm mostly into soul jazz right now, e.g. 'Alligator Bogaloo', my soul jazz take on 'Mas Que Nada' and that ever present Blues :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Hey Rounder,

Your videos are awesome, I could spend hours watching them, and have done it in fact. You have a very distinctive tone when you play, that is very fun to listen to, and I've never heard you miss a note.

    Keep it up.

  • Hi SkynyrdKidd

    Many thanks!

Spent hours watching my videos?! You are a brave man!

No plan of stopping tickling those ivories just yet :-)

    Keep swinging,

  • Totally amazes me how your left hand can keep going and going and the right hand doing different stuff! It blows my mind!

  • Hi gregory

The independent left hand is a 'trademark' of boogie woogie and jazz organ. Here is how you make it happen:

    1) Practice only the actual left hand bass line, until it is totally ingrained and you hardly even think about the left hand. No right hand at all. Use a metronome.

    2) Start adding very simple right hand stuff while keeping the left hand going.

    3) Gradually add more advanced right hand stuff.

It takes a lot of time but it is not at all impossible.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u After many years of lessons, I came to the conclusion that I'm just not 'designed' to play the piano! My brain just can't make my left hand do something different from my right!

  • Hi gregory

I believe you can! But maybe you have to start from the very beginning in order to sort all out :-)

    Try this:

    1) Play one single quarter note all the time for 15 min with your left hand. Metronome at 100BPM. Dull, I know, but do it anyway. It's for ingraining.

    2) Keep that left hand going, and add the samt note one octave higher with your right hand.

    3) Keep the same left, but start to add variations with your right, like eight notes.

    4) Gradually evolve.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • 22 Peoples dont like this song :(

  • Hi MegaEriccool

Yes, you are right, but I look at it this way: I'm surprised, delighted and thankful that so many people seem to like this song :-)

You see, it took quite some time before I did this little arrangement as I didn't see the song fit for organ. I saw it as a piano or orchestra piece.

  • This, along with Maple Leaf Rag and Yakety Sax make up the greatest slapstick songs known to man, Great work! Maybe you could do either of those in another video...

  • Thanks Echoparticle!

Chet Atkins live version of Yakety Axe, easily found here at YouTube is a masterpiece. I also like Maple Leaf Rag. If I find a way doing them justice on the organ I might give them a try. Time will tell.

Actually it took quite some time before I put my grubby hands on this baby elephant as I didn't see the song fit for organ. I saw it as a piano or orchestra piece.

    Keep swinging,

  • @rounder2u It made me laugh and giggle last night. All that smooth fingering and it was a purely percussive move that 'looks' like anyone can do that struck me.

Are you still making videos? I play with a guy that is thinking of getting a Nord and he was wondering what the Leslie effect sounded like when varying speeds .Maybe you already have one posted like that? Nice collection of videos none the less.

  • Hi skriddler

Anyone can do that move, it's only the triplet timing that might be a bit tricky.

I'm still now and then uploading at YouTube. I uploaded a bossa nova - 'Mas Que Nada' - just yesterday. Bossa novas also have percussive moves.

Actually I like non-tonal keyboard 'thumps', chord slides from upper to lower, and percussive effects in general at the organ.

In my videos I use the Leslie with different speeds, but I have no specific 'Leslie demo' uploaded.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u

    >>Anyone can do that move, it's only the triplet timing that might be a bit tricky.

Dont be so modest, that is much tougher to pull off correctly than you lead on.

    >>I'm still now and then uploading at YouTube.

Aaahh wow , yea just noticed the date,

    >>In my videos I use the Leslie with different speeds, but I have no specific 'Leslie demo' uploaded.

Yea, he's looking for something where they lean heavy on the Leslie speed in an almost over playing fashion. Foot switch?

  • Hi skriddler

If your friend is playing organ the 'Jimmy Smith style' by walking the bass with his left hand, I would suggest a foot switch if he is leaning heavy on frequent switching between slow/fast/stop Leslie positions. The reason is, as you already know, that the left hand is occupied by walking the bass, so it's cumbersome to control the Leslie by hand.

Otherwise, for 'regular' Leslie use the standard half-moon switch (as I'm using) is fine.

  • hey man ever tried hooking this thing up with some piano sounds too? the organ sounds great, but does it work with adding some piano through the midi?

  • Hi MyLifeChanger

The C1/C2 works great as a MIDI controller. You can easily do that, e.g. for piano sounds. I havn't done it myself but search for

'Nord C1 used as a controller for Boesendorfer software piano' by the YouTuber 'kw231263'

and you will hear the results.

  • did someone else find this song in a video with some really fat people walking XD

  • 1:18-1:28 HOLY COW!

  • Thanks xinesi!

You like that fast tremolo? I call it machine gun tremolo :-)

This is how you do it:

Start with the middle finger, then the thumb, then the middle finger, then the thumb, etc. Play slowly when you are learning the technique. Keep your hand as relaxed and still as possible. Practice this only a few seconds every time and max a few minutes in total every day. If you practice this technique too much you will very soon need to rest from it for a few days.

    Keep swinging,

  • Hi SebastianSevenInMay

You think that sounds better :-)

Good to hear that you like this version of this oldie. I have a long time liked the song myself, but been reluctant to play it on the jazz organ, as I didn't knew if I could do the song justice. At the keys it's normally a piano piece. Finally I did my jazz organ version of the song.

  • Hi, could I please have a copy of your Green Onion Guide. This tune was a huge Top 20 Hit at about the time I left school. It is something I have always wanted to play. • nice song and well performed, really great. are clavia going to produce nordpiano with real hammer action, like kawai RM3 or yamaha GT.2. that would be killer with clavia best in business sound

  • Hi casioPX500L

    Thanks!

Well, the main purpose of this Nord C1 organ is to be a copycat clonewheel of the best organ there is: the unsurpassed Hammond B-3/C-3. This means that the Nord C1 (and C2) has a waterfall, fast trigger, two manual 61 keys keyboard aiming for around the same action as the B-3/C-3.

The Nord Stage, I believe, has weighted hammer action.

  • Hi undertow

The computer and internet is an extension and amplification of our own nervous system. That's why it is cumbersome to be without it.

    Thanks for your compliments!

I'm not more talented than other people, and I'm no natural at all. You see, the 'secret' of improving is instead simple: Practicing! The recipe is to first listen and analyze, and then practice hard. Practice many hours a day if possible.

    Inspiration comes through perspiration :-)

    Keep swinging,

  • Yes it us amazing and I find the older I get the more I depend on it,my computer went down and it took me a couple of months to replace it and everyday I found myself needing the Internet from mundane to important questions.

  • Hi undertow

Your computer gone for a couple of months... What a horror story!

Well, this opinion of mine might be a telltale sign of how deep down the computer rabbit hole I've gone...

I probably need a long forced undeserved break :-)

  • Very nice. My mom had this on an album or a 45 when I was very young,I'm now 52 and I the songs title just ran through my mind and I couldn't remember how it went!! But thanks to you and Google I had a real treat of hearing it again. Thank you.

  • Thanks undertow!

Great little story! And isn't it quite amazing that we now, on the spur of the moment, thanks to internet, actually mostly and in the blink of an eye, find what we are looking for: a song, a part of a show, a definition of an idiom, translations, etc.

  • Can you please do a tutorial? I really want to learn this song :)

  • Hi flamingtarantula

I will not do a tutorial for Baby Elephant Walk, sorry. But I hope that my overhead cam perspective makes it possible for you to see what I'm playing.

This is how you start learning the song:

1 The left hand is the Boss! First learn the left hand boogie woogie pattern. Play only the left hand until you can play it without looking.

2 Memorize bit by bit of the right hand melody.

3 Start to play the right hand with your left hand.

    4 Practice hard.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • I didn't know Nord has so nicely sounding tonewheel organ simulation

  • Hi redbull

Isn't it great that we now finally have a few really good sounding B-3/C-3 clonewheels and/or simulators to choose from!

Clavia is indeed in the top short list together with a select few other producers with their Nord C1 (not produced anymore) and the successor Nord C2.

  • I love watching you tap the keys with your fist, and it sounds like a little baby elephant. So cute! You are very talented!

Oh, I just read another comment. "Hammond pops." I was entertained and I learned something! YIPPEE!

  • Thanks PlacentaPudding!

Glad to hear you like the way I use those taps. They have became a way of expression. In the beginning I had to focus hard to even hit one little tap where I wanted to hit it regarding the rhythmic timing. It was really like learning something totally new. I could play a song that I knew well, but as soon as I wanted to add a tap as a rhytmic fill-in it all collapsed :-)

In my 'Venus Rolling Rock' I also tap the upper manual, with a sharp sound.

  • Hi lotsacomplaints

Glad to hear you like it. Thanks!

Hatari was quite popular, I believe, and the song is still played e.g. for school concerts and in lots of other venues. I recently learned that Baby Elephant Walk was used in a TV ad for a telco in Germany. I think it's called Ladebalken Werbung. This song is, it seems, an evergreen.

    Keep swinging,

  • why are you piunding the keys with your fist

at no point in the song does it do that

  • Hi Greg

Non-tonal keyboard 'thumps', or sometimes called Hammond 'pops' is common in jazz organ. It is a tool for rhythm. Small rhytmic fill-ins.

They are often played by the fingertips, or sometimes, like I do here, with the knuckles.

If you are interested, you can check out my 'Riff Stapler Blues', for a bit more eleborate use of these keyboards 'thumps' .

No! I play guitar... really badly!

I just really like your playing style, and, I guess, the air of mystery that surrounds your YouTube posts! Who is Rounder?!!! Will we ever know?!!!

    Keira

  • Hi Keira

General concepts of riffs and especially groove applies to all instruments. So maybe you'll find a riff here and there suitable for your guitar :-)

Who Rounder is, and even what his main instrument is, is of utter unimportance :-) What he is trying to achieve is simply showing his little journey with the keys, and maybe at the same time be of some small help for others, by showing fingerings, sound settings, Q&A, etc.

All the best, and keep swinging Keira,

  • Hi TierheimBerlin

You are asking how I do to control my two hands?

In short I do like this:

    1) I learn the left hand, and play only the left hand until it is fully ingrained and I don't have to concentrate on the left hand while playing.

    2) Then I start adding the right hand figures, and play together with the left hand.

Rule number one in jazz organ:

The left hand is the Boss.

  • Thanks lesourn!

Really great to hear that I have inspired you to play my arrangement of the song :-)

I hope the overhead view shows my fingering clearly as an addition to the sound, but in case you get stuck somewhere or have other questions, send me a message. Include the exact timestamp (e.g. 1:44) if the question is about a certain phrase or technique.

If your Korg has a fast trigger action, the long 'machine gun' tremolo starting at 1:20 will work fine.

  • Thanks Bob!

I started doing what I call keyboard 'thumps' as a rhythmic device, and gradually they have become almost second nature when I play. I hardly think of them now. They are kind of a rhythm fill in that I do both in set pieces and during improvisations.

    Keep swinging,

  • Do you gace a guide for the bass line, or for that matter, any of the parts of this song?

  • Hi nathk

I have no other guide or sheets than this video, sorry, for this song. I play it by ear.

I hope, though, that my overhead camcorder perspective will make it easier to see my fingerings. I also hope that the left hand is clearly visible. I have, in addition, all details about sound settings under the 'more info' field.

If you get stuck you can write me the exact timestamp (e.g. 1m29s) and I will try to explain what I'm playing at that moment.

    Sounds cooler i guess

  • Thanks haraldinho!

Higher? You mean the frequency range of the melody. Like transposing it e.g. a fifth?

Well, maybe, but I feel the tone of the melody, with this 888000000 registration, is loosing a bit of it's 'body' if played higher.
