I love music and I have trouble discerning the difference between metal bands. It's unfortunate but true.
There are some stand out metal bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax and so forth, but this new metal you speak of all sounds the same as what has come before.
Oh and Metallica are a hair metal band IMO just like most from that era.
