it wasnt that scary...i dont watch much horror flicks..but i think the story wasn't that solid....i liked it for the scares thats ol...i wish it could have been more thrilling
the film was ok but dissapointing i wasnt scared. but i had seen the play in london and i got a sleepless night after the play it was that scary u need to watch the play
I have the exact same opinion as you. His acting could have been better, and it got better towards the ending. The only difference that we have is that I jumped at pretty much every jump scare. Because i'm a puss like that.
i think that this movie was just a movie made to scare people because is no real plot other than danial ratclife is being haunted and if thats what they were going for then i think they did a pretty good and the acting was hard to judge because there wasnt musch to judge it on
yeah no kidding there was only so many levels...you were expecting 2 or 3 levels but I wanted 7 or perhaps an eighth level. 10 levels would have be neat...
@PrettyMuchIt The scare that got you was the same one that got everyone in the cinema when I saw it, but my friend made it funny by being so scared that he screamed "FUCKING COCK!" and punched the air as if it to punch her. But, personally I think that it is one of the scariest films I've seen in a while and it is now up there as one of my favourite horror films along with Scream 2, Halloween H20 and Scream. It was good to see a film that relied on real scares rather than gore and murderers.
I think the people who like it don't watch that many horror movies so they cant see the cliched manner of the film. Having said that i enjoyed the movie and it did make me jump on a more than 1 occasions.
I'm excited to see this and like you said, i wanna see how Daniel does outside of HP...but...i'm seeing this with someone i'm pretty close to who i was meant to be getting with last year...hopefully...i wont be watching the film *wink-wink* ojoj
Come to England and see the stage production, I think you'll love it. They try and set it up as a story within a story and it is cleverly done. I really recommend you try and visit at some point and see for yourself :)
I saw this last night and enjoyed it which is good for me because I usually hate horror films. The film was definitely more creepy than scary which I appreciated because most horror films these days over indulge in gore which is not scary. As regards to Daniel Radcliffe, I thought he did a great job I liked how he kept his character subtle and reserved, it made him more mysterious which was great for this film.
You say that you thought this movie was ok while the ending was great, me on the other hand thought the overall movie was fantastic but the ending sucked big time. I won't say what it is because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but what can I say? It's just a matter of opinion. The only other thing I didn't like where the kids who sat behind me in the theater who would never shut the fuck up, very annoying and very disrespectful to the people who were watching. All I have to say!
i feel i expected too much of this movie. i was initially very dissapinted, but the more i think about it, the more i realize its better then alot of the other garbage that passes for horror right now. and i have to say that although i was expecting the plot to be more complicated, it was based on an old novel, so i cant really blame them. gotta disagree about Radcliffe. i admit to HATEING him in hp, and i was very pleasently surprised by his acting in this it was much more subtle and believable
The rocking chair is the one that REEALLY got me. There were some others that I wasn't expecting. I wish the acting was a little better, I thought there would be more emotion for Daniel's character, but er I guess not.
@PrettyMuchIt good one(sarcasm). everyone gets hate comments so dont get all worked up about it. it makes me want to make fun of you and your video more. just sayin
I COMPLETELY agree! I actually found this movie funny because they tried WAY too hard to make it scary. I went with 23 of my friends and they jumped at every jump-scare, which surprised me because I only jumped twice. They keep saying that it's the scariest movie ever, which annoys me. This movie wouldn't be popular without Radcliffe, which is the freaking reason we saw it in the first place.
You can't expect too much from horror movies. Your lucky if you get one plot twist. Usually you don't watch a horror film for the plot, you watch it to shit you pants ^_^ but on the other hand, this movie seems to have a decent amount of substance for a horror movie.
I agree with you on everything. the movie was ok and I kept waiting for a plot twist as well.. never happened. and idk if it's just me....but it felt as if Daniel R. barely spoke throughout the whole movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The beginning build reminded me of Insidious and how they will focus on certain objects. It led, me anyway, to anticipate something and always gave me a chill even if nothing happened. And when it did, there was a payoff. However, I do agree that many parts of this movie were very predictable. For instance, when Arthur puts his hand up on the glass, then the woman's face appears, my friend and I weren't affected at al
The reason why I think this movie wasn't AS scary as you would hope it would be is because.. the guy's from Harry Potter. They probably didn't want to make an 18+ rated movie thus dropping to a 14+ rate to attract the younger but larger HP lover audience.
Aw man, I expected much from this movie. I just came home from watching it and, you're absolutely correct- I thought it did lack in the 'scaring' part since there were several CHEAP scares. They weren't even that effective since it was obvious, with the slow suspense, that something was about to pop up! & I agree, that one dude he was mostly with seemed guilty about something :P The visuals and the spooky house, costumes, etc was decent though.
I enjoyed the movie, I usually agree with you but for this one I dont think I can. I went with two other friends and we were all freaked. I do have one thing to agree with you though, I thought there were going to be more levels to it as well, so that was sort of a let down. Also this movie is based on a play, so maybe that is a reason why Daniel chose to be apart of it.
I actually really liked this movie. I was expecting more too. I didnt think it was scary but I thought it was kind of interesting. I went to go see it with my friends and they think it was so terrifying she cried a little. I couldnt help but to just laugh at her. Also some parts I couldnt take his acting seriously to where he just reminded me of Harry Potter. Later on it just wore off. I would go see it again!
I haven't seen the movie, but I love Dan Radcliffe. It sort of worries me that he's signed up for another scary movie as well as this one. He definitely needs to get more challenging roles in order for people to take him more seriously and also partake in a wider variety of film genres rather than the horror/creepy films.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. I thought the scares were actually very very creepy, except for the stupid jump ones with the bird. I wont be sleeping well tonight!
I think daniel did great. during the movie you were not thinking harry potter is in this movie so that realy was good for me. there was 1 cheap scare. the bird, but other than that daniel was great the women in black was frikin scary, ther was a good plot and it was just a great movie over all
Haha, well her scream scared the crap out of me, but I am quite a whimp... For me I really liked this movie, and it really creeped me out. Maybe it's just me. I thought Dan's acting was good, he played his part well; although I agree that he did look too young to be a father of a four year old. The old school scary movie feel that it had made it scary for me because you knew when something was going to pop up or appear (which freaked me out). And honestly, I liked the simplicity of it all.
I want to watch it this tuesday and I hope it it goes well, because other movie reviewers sait it was good. This movie compared to Paranormal is way better from the trailers ive seen so far. I hated paranormal, ridiculous plots, and cheap jump scares.
I think you have to remember that this film is base on the book and the book doesn't really have any levels to it either. I read it really quickly because I wanted to get to the scary bits. They didn't come, but I think that if a read it again I could appreciate it more because I know more about the background of whats happening.
Yeah, it was a standard ghost story, but I don't really a problem with that. I went into without seeing a trailor or having any idea what it was really about, so I didn't have the problem of going into it expecting a complex (twisty) plot.
PS I think it should have ended with The Woman In Black being put to rest by the fact that Arthur is willing to die for his son, saying that she is haunting everyone because her sister let the kid drown to save herself.
I just have to say that I've seen the play and the play is fantastic. In order to move this story to film they had to cut out the lawyer and actor (the actor acts out the lawyer's story in the play) dynamic, which really makes it interesting and give the "twist" at the end that you might be looking for Erik. If you ever get a chance to see this play you will definitely enjoy it and be wowed.
*SPOILER* I hated the ending. I mean, why did they have to go to heaven and reunite with the mother. It should have ended with them getting hit by the train and the Woman in Black evilly grinning at their bodies.
@InsaneBurger Well, in a sense, she was seen on the other side of the train hissing, which is as evil as it gets.I honestly liked the ending, but it would have been cool if the mom was actually the woman in black in disguise at the end.
@JDM408 Yes but horror movies should leave you feeling terrible to make the viewer feel that horror is never dead. Not like "Yay! We reunite with the family and we live happily ever after!"
I'd be interested to hear your opinion of the original 1989 BBC film version of "The Woman in Black." A lot of people (myself included) have been scared s***less by this film (especially since I saw it as a child). It may be a disappointment seeing the very simply shot, zero special effects version, but it may also be a good alternative to this CG laden version. But if you ever get to see the stage version - specifically the London version - THAT's where the true scared are.
@XRigomortisX No no, it's being marketed as a horror 100%. The current ads boast "Do not see it alone" and they're trying to attract teens that want to be scared.
Honestly, I thought this was a great Horror Movie, and one of the best I've seen in a while.
I don't go to a ton of horror movies while they're in theaters, so bear with me.
Unlike a lot of horror movies these days, it doesn't turn back into modern horror movie gore-trash the way that many do. At the same time, it doesn't have an amazingly stupid twist, the way that others do. While it was stereotypical and unsurprising, they made me jump at all the scares, without scarring me for life. 4/5
Well I did enjoy the movie myself, you did bring up a good point when you said that Daniel should have picked a better script and whatnot but frankly I wasn't really disappointed. I am a Harry Potter fan as well as Daniel's but I was satisfied that I enjoyed this film :)
The only thing i didnt like was the ending because nothing changed from how the movie began and Radcliff's character didnt accomplish anything. Other than that, i thought it was a decent movie.
I actually really liked this movie. Mind you, I get scared easily. I am not tough at horror movies so I screamed A LOT. I fell for those "cheap scares." I really did like this movie. I thought his acting was good especially considering the type of movie this is. It's a horror film. It's not a drama. I mean, I never expect good acting from horror movies because I haven't seen one where the acting was important to me. I don't really watch that many horror movies, but I'd recommend it to a friend.
I actually really liked this movie. Now I'm not saying this is one of the best horror films I've ever seen but I thought the actors did a good job, especially Daniel Radcliffe, the overall atmosphere was creepy, and the storyline wasn't too complicated and it was a basic straightforward ghost story. I do wish there had been more and I think we all had high expectations that couldn't be met but for what I got I was happy about.
Yea what you are saying is correct that he should have picked up a more unique role if we are considering his previous role of HARRY POTTER , but if we look at the fact that he didnt choose a similar kind of role as before then maybe we can say he did justice to the movie so lets not criticse him for his first atempt after HP . As for the movie it didnt scare me coz half of the things were common like other horror flicks .
it was fun to watch though. through out a lot of the movie i was thinking just pull out your wand and everything will be okay! it was pretty entertaining.
And honestly! if you should know. I was supprised I didn't see him as harry potter throughout the movie. I thought I was going to just because I loved the harry potter movies a lot. I did see his as HP when his voice got high. I really liked it though!
There is a part I don't understand AT ALL, and no one has commented on it besides me. But I got the feeling that Jannet killed herself before her son died. Because the three of them are in front of the house and Jannet is in the window in the picture. The part that confused me is that she was writing notes to her sister about how angry she was that her son didn't get a proper service. Was Jannet writing these notes after she died?
Your full.of.SHIT this movie was.good your just hating making it a big.deal when it really isn't he did good and I never even seen a harry potter movie at i didn't know that was him till the end of the movie my wife told me.I was like Wtf? So shut.up bro it was good
I admit The women in Black was an average horror movie but it wasnt so bad acting wise , i mean daniel redcliff did a nice job after doing HARRY POTTER over an over again , it was kind of refreshing to see him in something different and that too a horror movie , it's not something people would have expected him to do next . At least he is trying to be a versatile actor !!!
@Tyala100 Agreed, I thought he was fine. But JUST fine isn't a good thing when you're trying to get past playing a character as iconic as Harry Potter. Definitely should have picked a more unique role, I think.
It was ok and i don't even like horror movies and my friend thought i be scared the whole thing when she was the one acting like that and i was like -_- except some parts but the ending killed it for me idk why tho.
i really liked it, the for me they really didn't ruin the women for me after the showed her face. Overall a descent horror movie and it so much fun in a crowded theater.
There are always going to be "horror cliches" in every scary movie, I mean there are only so many things they can come up with to scare people. I do agree that seeing her face kinda ruined it because I liked not knowing how exactly how her face looked under the veil
@ecofriendlyhippie That's not true, I've seen scary movies that aren't cliched. Also yes, I'd rather keep the face in my imagination rather than seeing it.
WARNING SPOILERS k so I Just watched it and i loved it overall i liked it the ending was happy and sad at the same time because well he died but he at least he gets to see his wife along with his son. What made me jump was when it shows the women in black hanging herself because it was the first time we saw her upclose as well as when the women in black went to the room to go to her sons dead body. Dat shit creeped me out
Yes, some of the scares were cliche but they were still VERY effective. This is the scariest movie i've seen since The Ring so I honestly have no clue what scares you Eric. I'm curious what it is about Paranormal Activity that scares or intrigues you more than this.
@PrettyMuchIt Interesting, I loved Insidious as well. The Woman in Black reached my expectations and even exceeded them..it's all just opinion though I guess.
I think the problem is Dan gave the movie such high expectations that it had to be perfect. So I read the book last week do my expectations would be in the right place. The book is freaky as hell if u have imagination. Seeing movie tonight. Sounds like the end changed from the book a lot though.
The Woman In Black was originally a performance in theater's, the story is based completely on the performance, so this is the reason for the reception as the full appreciation for a good performance is lost through cinema in this occasion.
@PrettyMuchIt I was just about to look for comments from you about chronicle. But now I have one! I want to get a few more reviews from my favorite reviewers until I see chronicle.
I liked it. I figured that he would've uncovered something sinister behind the Woman, but there wasn't... By the way, I don't think there were many jump-scares in this film, because I think of jump-scares as ACTUAL jump-scares, not seeing somebody in the background. This movie really made me look close though, I think about half-way in, if you look in the background you can see her just straight up STARE at Daniel. I do agree with the whole, "not a good choice for his first post HP film" though.
I hate movies that force scares for the viewer. That is why i absolutely hated paranormal activity 3. But i hear the movie got generally favorable reviews so i think i will watch it
I think twists are so overused, every time you go into a thriller movie you can't be expecting a twist. If you're the whole movie waiting for the twist you're not really getting the effect of the twist.
Its fair to comment on the movie as a whole, however, you seem to forget that the Movie was derived from a play. It's not supposed to be a movie, any transition from theatre to screen will undoubtedly make it forgettable. The story is about 30 years old, how can it be revolutionary? but yeah the acting didnt do the source material justice, when ive seen it in the theatre, its been way better than that.
I watched one of your reviews and then watched the movie you reviewed. And it was awesome. But you said it was bad. So I'm still going to see it no matter what tomorrow night.. You also mix it up too much."I like it, but it sucks, but I like it, But It's directed well, but I don't like it...."
@xDockmanx Well of course, this is just my opinion. I certainly hope you don't think I'm suggesting my opinion is fact, everyone's going to have their own opinion.
I met the director James Watkins today and he definitely seemed to think he'd made the best and most original horror film of all time from the way he discussed it. -.-
Not every movie an actor does is going to be great. Sure, it might not have been a wise choice, but he is extremely typecast right now and I'm sure he wanted to branch out and maybe do something that wasn't so serious. Anyway, great review Eric thanks again.
Without seeing the film I know for a fact the theatre/stage production is far better! The stage one was amazing and so scary! So don't think the film is up to standard compared to that! It's a shame the woman in black isnt shown in America because I think people would agree that the film isn't needed! :)
That poster is almost identical to the layout of the poster for the flick "Stir of Echoes" starring Kevin Bacon which also is about a ghost tormenting a man.
@PrettyMuchIt Ditto!! I loved it so much it was the first movie I saw more than one time in the theater, I saw it 4 times, it may not be THAT great but it is awesome nevertheless. Do you agree about the poster looking similar? Look it up on IMDB and tell me what you think.
well, I guess it's not the same to translate a book into a movie, when it was done into a play too. also, screenplays change from page to the actual movie, and that doesn't really depends on actors. either way, Radcliffe did December Boys in between HP movies and it wasn't a big thing either, although I personally liked it... still, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie :) thanks for the review. will come back after I've seen it and watched the spoiler section.
it wasnt that scary...i dont watch much horror flicks..but i think the story wasn't that solid....i liked it for the scares thats ol...i wish it could have been more thrilling

Yeah, it was a standard ghost story, but I don't really a problem with that. I went into without seeing a trailor or having any idea what it was really about, so I didn't have the problem of going into it expecting a complex (twisty) plot.
PS I think it should have ended with The Woman In Black being put to rest by the fact that Arthur is willing to die for his son, saying that she is haunting everyone because her sister let the kid drown to save herself.
fanpire715 2 weeks ago
Also the ending is horrible. They really "Hollywood"ed it and is absolutely nothing like the play ending.
Mrsdean1087 2 weeks ago
I just have to say that I've seen the play and the play is fantastic. In order to move this story to film they had to cut out the lawyer and actor (the actor acts out the lawyer's story in the play) dynamic, which really makes it interesting and give the "twist" at the end that you might be looking for Erik. If you ever get a chance to see this play you will definitely enjoy it and be wowed.
Mrsdean1087 2 weeks ago
*SPOILER* I hated the ending. I mean, why did they have to go to heaven and reunite with the mother. It should have ended with them getting hit by the train and the Woman in Black evilly grinning at their bodies.
InsaneBurger 2 weeks ago
@InsaneBurger Well, in a sense, she was seen on the other side of the train hissing, which is as evil as it gets.I honestly liked the ending, but it would have been cool if the mom was actually the woman in black in disguise at the end.
JDM408 2 weeks ago
@JDM408 Yes but horror movies should leave you feeling terrible to make the viewer feel that horror is never dead. Not like "Yay! We reunite with the family and we live happily ever after!"
InsaneBurger 2 weeks ago
I'd be interested to hear your opinion of the original 1989 BBC film version of "The Woman in Black." A lot of people (myself included) have been scared s***less by this film (especially since I saw it as a child). It may be a disappointment seeing the very simply shot, zero special effects version, but it may also be a good alternative to this CG laden version. But if you ever get to see the stage version - specifically the London version - THAT's where the true scared are.
ScottPietrangelo 2 weeks ago
@ScottPietrangelo I agree a hundred percent! The London performance was great
Mrsdean1087 2 weeks ago
Well this wasnt not labeled as horror it was more of drama
XRigomortisX 2 weeks ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@XRigomortisX No no, it's being marketed as a horror 100%. The current ads boast "Do not see it alone" and they're trying to attract teens that want to be scared.
PrettyMuchIt 2 weeks ago 5
The only reason why they didn't go with the murder plot( which would be awesome) is that is is off a book

You know Voldemort was the bad guy in this movie.
narutochibi456 2 weeks ago

PsycheAnimus 2 weeks ago
The only thing i didnt like was the ending because nothing changed from how the movie began and Radcliff's character didnt accomplish anything. Other than that, i thought it was a decent movie.

I actually really liked this movie. Mind you, I get scared easily. I am not tough at horror movies so I screamed A LOT. I fell for those "cheap scares." I really did like this movie. I thought his acting was good especially considering the type of movie this is. It's a horror film. It's not a drama. I mean, I never expect good acting from horror movies because I haven't seen one where the acting was important to me. I don't really watch that many horror movies, but I'd recommend it to a friend.
khcodesrikurawks 2 weeks ago

Tyala100 2 weeks ago
it was fun to watch though. through out a lot of the movie i was thinking just pull out your wand and everything will be okay! it was pretty entertaining.

I admit The women in Black was an average horror movie but it wasnt so bad acting wise , i mean daniel redcliff did a nice job after doing HARRY POTTER over an over again , it was kind of refreshing to see him in something different and that too a horror movie , it's not something people would have expected him to do next . At least he is trying to be a versatile actor !!!
Tyala100 2 weeks ago 2
@Tyala100 Agreed, I thought he was fine. But JUST fine isn't a good thing when you're trying to get past playing a character as iconic as Harry Potter. Definitely should have picked a more unique role, I think.

There are always going to be "horror cliches" in every scary movie, I mean there are only so many things they can come up with to scare people. I do agree that seeing her face kinda ruined it because I liked not knowing how exactly how her face looked under the veil

Dat shit creeped me out
hijazzer10 2 weeks ago
Yes, some of the scares were cliche but they were still VERY effective. This is the scariest movie i've seen since The Ring so I honestly have no clue what scares you Eric. I'm curious what it is about Paranormal Activity that scares or intrigues you more than this.

The Woman In Black was originally a performance in theater's, the story is based completely on the performance, so this is the reason for the reception as the full appreciation for a good performance is lost through cinema in this occasion.

I think twists are so overused, every time you go into a thriller movie you can't be expecting a twist. If you're the whole movie waiting for the twist you're not really getting the effect of the twist.

PrettyMuchIt 2 weeks ago 2
Its fair to comment on the movie as a whole, however, you seem to forget that the Movie was derived from a play. It's not supposed to be a movie, any transition from theatre to screen will undoubtedly make it forgettable. The story is about 30 years old, how can it be revolutionary? but yeah the acting didnt do the source material justice, when ive seen it in the theatre, its been way better than that.

Without seeing the film I know for a fact the theatre/stage production is far better! The stage one was amazing and so scary! So don't think the film is up to standard compared to that! well, I guess it's not the same to translate a book into a movie, when it was done into a play too. also, screenplays change from page to the actual movie, and that doesn't really depends on actors. either way, Radcliffe did December Boys in between HP movies and it wasn't a big thing either, although I personally liked it... still, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie :) thanks for the review. will come back after I've seen it and watched the spoiler section.
