Its all about 2.03 when the kid screams loooooooool. Me and my friends pretty much died laughing in the cinema during this film. That and when Pagoda stabbed Royal with the pocket knife shouting "You sunnavaBITCH!"
Man, we really pissed off the wannabe middle class crowd that night, kinda feel bad now. One of my friends thought the movie was boring and went off half way through to watch Ali G showing in another room LOL
ends with my favorite line of the movie. i love how wes anderson was able to take a scene like this, completely depressing with obviously no comedic value, but turn it around and bring back the feel of the film. with that one, short, interaction between dudley and margot you know that there is still fun to be had in a deeply serious moment such as this.
The one thing I don't get... Why does he say "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow", then there's a jump cut, but still in the same sequence, and he tries to kill himself right then?
Why say "tomorrow"? Does the jump cut represent a time change within the sequence, meaning that he said he'd kill himself tomorrow, thought about it for a sec, and then just decided not to wait? 'Cuz that's the only way I can think to explain it.
@AYoungWoman I think you're on the right track. To me, he says it because he has barely begun to contemplate it, then, there's a flash of him, still with his beard and long hair, which might represent his past catching up to him. He therefore decides to do it then and there.
this is why Wes Anderson is a brilliant director, you watch this amazing character try to kill himself with an amazing song by a guy who did 'kill himself' underneath it and its shocking and sad and beautiful, and yet i still laugh at Dudley's face when he walks in. A beautiful mix of comedy and tragedy, very well performed. Excellent film.
According to Wes Anderson, the quote "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow" is from the film Le feu follet, which heavily influenced The Royal Tenenbaums.
You know, I wanted to feel bad for Luke Wilson during this scene. But then I remembered his character Casey Kelso from Thats 70's Show and I couldn't get him out of my head
@robotchicken47 the actor who plays dudley (stephen lea sheppard) is in freaks and geeks, but he's not martin starr. he plays Harris! <3 freaks and geeks.
the saddest song i have ever heard in my life (and i've heard them all) and the saddest scene i have ever watched (and i've seen them all.) definitely a masterpiece that only someone like wes anderson could have created. thank you wes, for your genius. you always combine perfect music with perfect footage.
@jenzeppelin you have seen every movie and heard every song? i am going to then assume that you are 300 years old, and you have never slept or left the house. that's some wild stuff.
Elliot Smith definitely sets the mood with his unique sound, but everything about this scene simply works too well; and Luke Wilson is without question an under-appreciated actor.
elliott was suppose to make a closing track for the movie along with this one, but he ran off and stabbed himself in the heart twice... 'another odd thing to notice.
1st - The Royal Tenenbaums came out in 2001. Elliott Smith passed away in 2003. His death obviously had nothing to do with his involvement. He had enough time to do so if he so pleased.
2nd - It was an track for the movie, not necessarily the closing track.
3rd - "Elliott Smith" is not a band but a solo artist who used a band when needed lol.
@Victoria79239, i dont want to post a spoil, just watch the movie. its favorite movie ever, also elliott smith is my favorite band. you can't go wrong, ehh? ;)
to the contrary english is extremely hard and is actually one of the hardest languages to learn to those who don't have it as their native language, and befitting might be a better choice. ironic would have some more insightful meaning (like if Luke wilsons character had died from heroin like elliot smith)
@MetalicB0x Elliot Smith did not die from heroin. He argued with his girlfriend, and stabbed himself in the chest with 2 knives, and still lived. It wasn't until his girlfriend pulled out his knives that he finally died later in the hospital. I find your comment kind of insulting towards Elliott, regardless if he was a drug addict or not.
Hmm IMO when he actually said that "I am going to kill myself tomorrow was meaningless,as he was shaving after along time and was sure going to miss his beard (focus on the flashback it starts from the scene where he has his beard) then he sees the flashback of sad hurting events and actually cuts himself. "
I laugh my ass off every time I watch this scene. I've found it to be the most darkly humorous scene in film history. It's all so random and surreal. Trimming his bushy beard all the way to a rough stubble, announcing he's going to kill himself tomorrow then does it right there, and then the cherry on top, the look on that goofy kid's face when he discovers Owen Wilson. Wes Anderson is a genius.
I hate when you're reading someone's comment, and it's going along fine, and you're agreeing with them, and then at the end you realize it was all just to plug some goddam song they recorded and posted on their channel. If you agree, check out the folk songs me and my sister recorded and posted on our channel!

@cgmsdh I read it more of that he literally spends more than a day in the bathroom, what we're viewing is essentially a montage of this 24-48 hour breakdown. Everyone has their own interpretation though!
@cgmsdh Not quite. In the commentary on the DVD, Wes said he basically copied this scene from a foreign movie he saw where I guy said "I am going to kill myself tomorrow." Kind of weird how it actually makes the scene work even though it doesn't make any sense.
@cgmsdh Wes Anderson in the commentary said that it was actually a mistake, there is no deep meaning behind him saying that. It was a mistake in the scene that people made sense of themselves.
@cgmsdh The line actually comes from a french film from 1963 called "Le feu follet" or "The Fire Within", which according to Wes Anderson on the audio commentary influenced the movie.

I'm sorry to ruin a near-perfect scene, but why does he say that he's going to kill himself tomorrow and then attempts then and there?? Over than that, a great scene.

This is my favorite movie I have seen at least 50 times and I know there is people out there who have seen it more , I like this a lot I can really relate to this scene
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't understand.. He was to much of a little bitch to handle life so he decided to cut himself? Why are you people praising somebody that's such a little bitch. And all he did was fucking stand in a mirrior, shave, and cut himself. There is nothing deep, emotional, ironic, or cynical about it. How could you even consider that acting?
@whiteboie79 you should try watching the actual movie so you can sound like you actually know what you're talking about. Everyone's talking about his performance across the entire movie not just this scene
@whiteboie79 He was a talented and successful celebrity who was brought to his knees by the most mundane of things that everybody experiences at least one. It's forbidden and difficult and impossible. That's what's emotional about it.
There's nothing poetic or romantic about suicide, stil, Anderson captures it in exactly this way - well, it's kinda ironic, maybe cynical, but still it's a thing of beauty...
i love the way Anderson made Chas and his kids wear sport outfit, as if he was trying to make them be Richie (practicing all day) +the fact they always wear the same color as their dad - Chas way to make sure they stay on "his teams" (unlike his father).
god this fits. i've fantasized about it, but I never plan on making anything of it. And its not beautiful. it hurts people around that individual. again, it really does exemplify the emotions of it by the fact that there was nothing to it. he just does it without making a scene.

How could you even consider that acting?
whiteboie79 7 months ago
@whiteboie79 you should try watching the actual movie so you can sound like you actually know what you're talking about. Everyone's talking about his performance across the entire movie not just this scene
aakzeman 7 months ago
@whiteboie79 no, you clearly don't understand.

This scene and the one in RULES OF ATTRACTION are the best suicide scenes Ive ever seen..

Am I the only one who noticed that they didn't wipe the shaving cream off of his face?

i love the way Anderson made Chas and his kids wear sport outfit, as if he was trying to make them be Richie (practicing all day) +the fact they always wear the same color as their dad - Chas way to make sure they stay on "his teams" (unlike his father).

Everybody wants to be Ritchie and he just wants them to be happy.
i always wonder though what's worst, to have a margo in your world or to don't have a Margo at all.
