What I don't get is WHY people assume that there's anything more than a deep friendship between Mei and Gabu.

Maybe it's the fact that people assume everything Japanese has to have a sexual connotation or influence on the story or design or art style.

It's unlikely enough that a predator would befriend and take care of what is normally only his source of food, but resisting hunger as far as he apparently does to keep his friend at the cost of his own strength is true friendship beyond bounds.

Well...why not? What I don't get is why the term "romantic" instantly ties to "sexual", and is somehow less pure because of that. The way I see it, Mei and Gabu are each other's worlds. Soul mates. That can mean they're deeply close friends, in romantic love, or even both.

If there's anything intimate there...who knows? That's entirely their business/

Eh... Not so much. It's totally far more deep than some romantic comedy or romeo/juliet relationship. It's a true bond, a loving friendship, an adventure between two soul mates, bounded together by the strange yet fated results of several events.

I think it's comparable to Fox and the Hound, only on a much deeper and intimate level. If you've ever had a best friend who you've trusted and loved, regardless of gender, you'll know what I mean.
