Interesting... I think overall, as a Martial Art, judo seems to have a slight advantage that they do both stand-up (tachiwaza) and mat-work (newaza) techniques. Jiujitsu is more based on mat-work. It seemed that even after the first time of not succeeding, Gracie went for the same move, which shows me a lack of technique- of course, I don't know what he could do, because Toshida dominates in throwing techniques. Bjj is a pussy way to fight. Stand up as use kicking and punching techniques. Gracie techniques are pussy because he doesn't know how to fight, so he wrestles as an alternative. On streets, ya use both gung fu or judo or whatever but not in competition come on, it's pussy not skill.

@valgorlin I do not think that these two martial arts are superior to others. I studied Judo for 20 years and 4 Kyokushin. From what I saw and learned, I can only say that every martial art has its strengths and weaknesses: the Kyokushin blows stronger and leads to development of strength and endurance. Judo mentally and physically prepare for the fighter to counter every move of the opponent. Using them together gives a nearly perfect mix.
I watched this match as it was happening on tv. you cant see it in the video but right before the referee jumped in. You can see royce's neck on his right side completly clear. there was no way this choke was going to choke out anyone. much less then royce gracie. I have been training in bjj for about a year and all of my friends was getting excited when the choke was reached and I showed them look at his neck it is not covered. and then the refee jumped in. on my tv royce gracie jumped up.

Truth, the Gracies are kind of douchey in general. They generally don't show respect to opponents and behave as if they came up with 100% of the moves that exist in BJJ, often disrespecting other martials arts (from which they took techniques of course).

When you do the Ezequiel choke the way Yoshida did with his leg extended out far, but more importantly in the line of his throat he had all of his weight on Royce's throat. Yoshida executed this technique beautifully.

I practiced Judo por 3 years in Mexico and even made it to practice in Japan´s Kodokan .During that time, Mr. Risei Kano was the school´s director. It is a beautiful sport , art or science whatever you might call it. Judo was invented by Jigoro Kano, his father, who exctracted it from Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Both sports are great and these two warriors we¨ve watched are real representatives of them for they are both the best. Congratulations!!

@specialforces69 Judo was taken from Japanese Ju-Jitsu heck before it was Judo it was called Kano Ju-Jitsu hence the reason when Maeda came to Brazil it was still called JJ. Second, yes, Judo evolved from JJJ and incorporated several new techniques but 90% of Judo was part of original JJJ (several schools). All Kano did was took his knowledge of JJJ (he studies in several schools), removed stuff that didn't work and incorporated other JJJ schools into his "Kodokan".

@specialforces69 No, you're wrong again, D'arce choke is a modern name of an old technique (e.g. Kimura is actually ude-garame in Judo/JJJ) but the actual technique name for D'arce Choke in Japanese Ju-Jitsu or Judo is called "gyaku kata-gatame jime" and has been used by Judo legends and ground specialist like Tsunetane Oda in late 1800's even before BJJ was invented, same with Anaconda choke (which is a variation of gyaku kata-gatame jime). Please learn more about JJJ / Judo.
@specialforces69 Yes, some elements are missing in JJJ but triangle chokes, omoplatas (or in Ju-Jitsu/Judo it's called sankaku ashi garame), reverse triangles were all in JJJ. Judo came from JJJ and EVERYTHING you've mentioned except rubber guard was originally inside Kodokan Judo when it was invented by Kano. Hence, Kano took these moves from JJJ. Google examples of Fusen ryu, Tenjin Shinyō-ryū, these JJJ schools teach ground fighting, which was used in Judo and then BJJ & Sambo.

@valgorlin I do not think that these two martial arts are superior to others. I studied Judo for 20 years and 4 Kyokushin. From what I saw and learned, I can only say that every martial art has its strengths and weaknesses: the Kyokushin blows stronger and leads to development of strength and endurance. Judo mentally and physically prepare for the fighter to counter every move of the opponent. Using them together gives a nearly perfect mix.

I watched this match as it was happening on tv. you cant see it in the video but right before the referee jumped in. You can see royce's neck on his right side completly clear. there was no way this choke was going to choke out anyone. much less then royce gracie. I have been training in bjj for about a year and all of my friends was getting excited when the choke was reached and I showed them look at his neck it is not covered. and then the refee jumped in. on my tv royce gracie jumped up.

I started in Judo but I think that most people forget the Gracies/Machado's JJ is a "version" of Japanese forms.The Japanese/Chinese/Indians were doing it centuries before hand. Much respect for Gracie Jiu Jitsu but that family has some of the biggest sore losers around sports. Ok theoretically even if you didn't get choked out, resting your hands on his knees wouldn't have helped you escape. The Gracies have done this strategy before, they think that if you can go in and out of consciousness that it shouldn't be a loss.

It's a wraparound sleeve choke starting from behind the neck, and really common in judo as an alternative to the can-opener.

I practiced Judo por 3 years in Mexico and even made it to practice in Japan´s Kodokan .During that time, Mr. Risei Kano was the school´s director. It is a beautiful sport , art or science whatever you might call it. Judo was invented by Jigoro Kano, his father, who exctracted it from Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Both sports are great and these two warriors we¨ve watched are real representatives of them for they are both the best. Congratulations!!

En la actualidad tengo 53 años, no practico Judo desde los 20 , era un deporte que amaba , y aun lo amo pero ya no practico debido a mi trabajo (y a la edad). Con nostalgia, ocasionalmente observo competencias en la Tv y Youtube. No se si haya escuelas en el norte, aqui en La Paz ya cerro la unica que habia en la cual practicaba, mis tecnicas preferidas eran tai otoshi y sasae tsurikomi ashi. Saludos a Chiapas.

@specialforces69 Judo was taken from Japanese Ju-Jitsu heck before it was Judo it was called Kano Ju-Jitsu hence the reason when Maeda came to Brazil it was still called JJ. Second, yes, Judo evolved from JJJ and incorporated several new techniques but 90% of Judo was part of original JJJ (several schools). All Kano did was took his knowledge of JJJ (he studies in several schools), removed stuff that didn't work and incorporated other JJJ schools into his "Kodokan".

@specialforces69 No, you're wrong again, D'arce choke is a modern name of an old technique (e.g. Kimura is actually ude-garame in Judo/JJJ) but the actual technique name for D'arce Choke in Japanese Ju-Jitsu or Judo is called "gyaku kata-gatame jime" and has been used by Judo legends and ground specialist like Tsunetane Oda in late 1800's even before BJJ was invented, same with Anaconda choke (which is a variation of gyaku kata-gatame jime). Please learn more about JJJ / Judo.

@specialforces69 Yes, some elements are missing in JJJ but triangle chokes, omoplatas (or in Ju-Jitsu/Judo it's called sankaku ashi garame), reverse triangles were all in JJJ. Judo came from JJJ and EVERYTHING you've mentioned except rubber guard was originally inside Kodokan Judo when it was invented by Kano. Hence, Kano took these moves from JJJ. Google examples of Fusen ryu, Tenjin Shinyō-ryū, these JJJ schools teach ground fighting, which was used in Judo and then BJJ & Sambo.
