We have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 (1%) API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs/Injection and tank clean and rustfree!
@wepner Very true, automatics are extremely boring, BUT, we are not talking about excitement on shifting, we are talking about the speed at which an automatic shifts. It will shift a lot faster then you will shift your manual. And besides, doing a quarter mile as fast as he did, your not really worried how much fun shifting is, when going for 0-60 in a few quick seconds.
@Goldenn16 are you saying an automatic will speed up the car? because as scary as it is to say, my dad talked to the head guy ATI when he was destroying jerico transmissions on the regular and they told him that it wouldn't speed up the car or help at all, they told him to stick with a manual
@wepner No I am not saying it will "speed up" your car, it just how fast it shifts. Some people can not shift the standard transmission as fast as an automatic transmission. When your car gets to X amount of rev's as fast as it does when running 8s, 9s, 10s, etc... it makes it easier and a lot quicker on shifting when you don't have to clutch then shift unclutch then go repeat. Unless we are talking about a Semi-Auto where you can shift with out a clutch at all. But yah. You understand my point.
@Goldenn16 Its not really a matter up speeding up a car with an automatic, you can get damn good times with a straight shift, automaitcs are just more consistent
@BlackLS1TA i've heard that my whole life. but with 40 years of experience he does pretty good at being consistent. i've seen him keep it within .03 of a second in 7 runs. so i don't really think that it's an issue.. does it seem it?
@wepner If you're not a bad driver, and you have LOADS of experiencs with the car and shifting it, then you'll be good and hitting that same shift rpm everytime. It's just that an automatic is controlled with a computer, it eliminates alot of human variables.
@wepner You just answered your own question, any normal person will not be consistent, where as 40 years of experience as a racer you get consistency. You can have anything with experience. And even with experience there is always a chance of a miss-shift and you cant say that its never happened cause it happens to everyone every now and then. Automatics are just more common in drag racings, cause they are more reliable there is no room for error unless the tranny falls out
well, my dad shuts the engine off at the finish line and acctually checks the plugs at the end of the track from time to time. and the car used to be a superstock motor that you could of spit on and the cylinder wall would of collapsed. so the less time running it the better. thus... shut it off as soon as he could.
So let me get this straight, after the run, the engine's shut off(throttle plates closed/mechanical fuel pump no longer pumping OR electric fuel pump turned off), driver's foot's off the throttle, and the engine's STILL sucking fuel? -only if the choke is CLOSED!
racers shut the engine off after a run so they can 'read' the plugs.-tow the racecar back to the pits and pull the plugs off.
Never understood why people followed the fad of shut the engine off just after the lights? Stilli sucking fuel into the engine and washing down the rings. Hell even Pro Mods quit doing it.
Wepner, don't be cocerned with stupid coments, I've seen your dad's car in action at New England Dragway in Epping NH at MOPAR show sometime in the 90's. I' a great lover of 70-71 dusters. that car is BADD. I've got it somewhere on VHS. When I find it, I'll up oad it. It will show start line to time. I think at the time it was running 10.06, wheels up out of the hole. I can't believe it's still around and I did not know he was the original owner. I did know it was a factory Duster340 4 spd car
Rev limiters are meant to save your engine if you miss-shift, snap an axle, driveshaft, trans, or u-joint. manual transmissions are fun to drive, but autos are the best way to go if they are built right.
rev limiters dont protect any of those.... miss-shift and the engine will over-rev right past the rev limiter, pall... mechanical over-rev is pretty much unavoidable if you get into a situation where it gets into gear and the wheels are going too fast.
Well he has raced this car since new in 1970. He did have to use the clutch and he did have to figure put how to build a strong motor over the years. He made the horsepower himself. The car does run 9.30s 9.40s.
It isn't like the old days when you actually had to use a clutch and didn't have rev limiters. BAck then you had to build your own stuff. You couldn't just go out and buy 11 second or 9 second motors...
its still the same, just with better parts and electronics so you don't destroy all your hard work, because of a missed shift, etc and get left with a pile of parts and no money to rebuild it all.
isn't strange that this is fun for me too to see how fast you can go k but it does not last long like 13 seconds for me ya i got a slow car moneys tight you know well my pint is i wish it could last longer we strive to go faster but wish it could be a longer joy ride lol
Cool video

The car ran a 1/4 mile string of bests last year, 9.16, 9.12, 9.08 and another 9.08
wepner 6 days ago
It's not a hurst shifter, it's a Long shifter. The car now has a lenco in it, got lots of incar camera videos of that one on here too
wepner 6 days ago
The run took under 6 seconds because its at a n 1/8 mile track that I said was closer than all the 1/4 mile tracks,
wepner 6 days ago
I said WE used a clutch with no rev limiter. I didn't say they didn't make rev limiters. Just to clarify.

When you get under 10's or so, Automatic is the way to go. There just downright faster at shifting then a Manual.
