interesting that the red car at the start features in the brochure....the lady passenger has a beehive hairstyle, although how could it manage to stay intact!
they sold a version of this here in America, called the Austin America. i believe the only body style available to us Americans was a 2 door. it's a shame all but a handful of these were junked out, though they do come up for sale every now and then on eBay. i kinda want one of them now.
What they should have done with Ado16 in 1973 is give it the front end of the Austin Apache - and yes, given us the saloon version too - that was really smart, and let it live on for a couple of years more until they'd sorted the Allegro out - then launched that in '75.
My dad had two of those, a '63 green one followed by a '71 lime coloured one. The second one was the first cat I ever drove and I passed my test in it in '77. Loved it!!
I have a 73 in Bronze Yellow and i drive it everywhere. It took me,my son and a trailer full of camping gear from Cornwall to Yorkshire and all around the north last year. 2000 miles in 10 days and home again with no trouble. It got lots of attention from everyone. They were truly great cars. Build quality was actually good. It was the design that was flawed as it had several rust traps. Hade these been corrected early on, many more would have survived. Issigonis said no!
Yeah build quality was not the best but neither were Vivas or Anglias - the 1100/1300 were actually very succesful but the failure of BL lay in their appalling attempts to replace the car. Never liked 'em myself but they were definitely the right car for many many buyers.....
it was! The best selling car for all of the 60s apart from the one year it took for people to realise the new Cortina was all fur coat and no knickers... so then they bought an 1100
THe 1100 was one of history's few cars that was replaced by a car that was worse in almost every way. The Allegro was uglier (almost universal opinion), slower, less economical, and smaller inside. It wasn't screwed together any better either. Wonderful!
i own and drive a 71 austin 1100 in bright tartan red! fantastic car! gets as much attention as a ferrari! better looking than the mini new or old! a true british icon that never gets its due praise!
Better looking than the new BINI, but stop talking rubbish. The 1100 came after the Mini and owed it's technology to that, plus the Pininfarina styling meant it looked old fashioned by the 1970's, where as the Mini never really dated because it never really got styled and was the first truly classless car.
Great Video. I liked the Italian footage. I kept expecting Michael Caine to pop up with a Bedford bus..."Nah, we make our getaway in three Austin 1100s..." I bet some of those in the video that got rough treatment suffered from engine shudder problems when the clutch was let in after! Strange in one of the later scenes - the white LHD parks between a Mini and another 1100, yet the 'other' 1100 appears to be a later facelift model with the wider grille...so is this a promotional film?
I doubt Michael Caine would have though, because Paddy Hopkirk won the Monte in a Mini Cooper S and that was the car Mick Jagger and all The Beatles were driving at the time.
great vid 2 thumbs up :-)). the 1100 was a very progressive car in the 60-ies and the hydralastic suspention was a great development from BMC. shame to see what happens to BMC/BMH/BLMC and at last BL. britains cars once rule the whole world and commonwealth and now? only names who are gone with the wind, such a shame :-((
Anglias and Mark 1 Cortinas were crap then, and worse now. I can't think of anything worse than a 105E frankly. The 1100/1300 still drives like a relatively modern car, particularly the later 1300 with a servo. Light steering and gearchange, very good ride, plenty of torque.
I had one of these, a 1964 model but probably a late 63 asit had the cranked gear shift and no synchro on first, lovely car in deep connaught green. It did not have any rust problems either but I did have the subframe and radius arms replaced, the later was a weak point with earlier version as they allowed water ingress with knackered the bearing.
I had an 1100 I must say the engine was really good but the heel board went which was a common fault along with the subframe. my mate and I took the back seat out cut through the body to get to the heel board then welded it up from inside the car needless to say today that would never pass an MOT. But fond memories of this car with hydrolastic suspension it also had a smmoth ride.
what a great credit to the video this tune is! love 1100`s to bits!, got my beautiful red 71 model on road this year!, still only 51,000 miles on it! great car! get attention all time! agree that fords are rubbish! capri`s etc pah! a real piece of trouble 1100`s easy to fix!, the secret is dry storage against rust!
You can keep your cart sprung, council estate chariot, furry dice working class Ford rubbish - this was a great car. Sophisticated and delicate, before the unions ruined everything. A great Issigonis design.
My first car in 1986 was a 1972 Vanden Plas Princess 1300, which I sold in the Summer of 87. What a great car it was, them picnic tables were great for all sorts of things#.#
does anyone remember the '70s public information film warning of the dangers of mixing cross plys and radials? an 1100 got rolled over in that I think
Some of the test shots, especially at 1:02 were filmed at MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association), just North of Nuneaton.

And how many cortinas had front wings continually requiring repairs?
What about the nasty 90's incarnation of the Escort that well literally fell to pieces around you?
We'll leave it there.... although how about the ignition keys that wear like no-ones business, then leave you stranded?
