The every day person was also a lot more religious at the time, not to mention the fact that the cathedrals were that of their own religion. Also, if you were to go back to the 16th & 17th Centuries you'd see the same conflict between Catholics & Protestants.

Most of us are post religion you see, so we are pretty put off by any superstitious holy-rollers. But we wouldn't be so put off by something that's been a part of our culture for hundreds of years. Thing is it seems most, if not all Muslims in the US, have become Americanised, because Americans enforce national identity and patriotism a lot more on their citizens than we do, whereas the UK has become almost void of its own identity and has practically open boarders for fanatics to live here, hence our Muslim population still lives as if it's "back home".
