Lionel 31960 Polar Express Set from TRAINZ.COM

I saw this at a Bargain Store for 57.99. The store have alot of damaged boxes items for sale cheap. So the Polar Express box wasn't all that bad. Is that a good deal $57.99? The set comes also with a shiny bell. Is that from Lionel or other maker?

The whistle on mine doesn't sound like that. It's just really loud.

I have this one too, and fixed the wheezing whistle by spreading the tender body slightly away from the frame with a dime!...Seems the little fan can't get enough air the way it's made.

Too bad they don't put the old metal whistle in these tenders. That one sounds like an old guy wheezing. Nice layout.

The reason it sounds like that is too much use.

The real reason they sound like this is the motor that is used in them. I have this same set and it sounds just the same. The can motor revs too high easily with the voltage needed to operate this heavy train. If you use less track voltage it will sound normal.

Lionel needs to install a resistor to slow down the can motor. Will work . I will do it do mine after experimenting with different ones. The origional lionel whistles actually run at 2 speeds through the transformer. Best Jim
