Wrex can be killed in the first game, you know. So can Ashley or Kaidan, that's why we're not gonna find them in any Mass Effect 2 trailers or promos but Wrex and Kaidan/Ashely will be returning if they weren't killed, same with any other notable character in the first game.

you need to upgrade your stats, in the squad section in the pause menu. I can't remember which attribute you have to upgrade but go on each one and it should describe what it does in the corner. When u've upgraded the correct attribute enough you should be able to wear heavy armour.

Some or all? If it's some, then it's probably Krogan armor and not human armor. If it's all, then you're not the soldier class, only soldiers can wear heavy armor.
