Everything he was saying was a reaction to the overwhelming amount of booing he started to receive from Americans all across arenas in the U.S.A! It was the Americans who changed! Bret never turned his back on them! They turned their backs on him! The American wrestling fans were the ones that made the "heel turn"! Not Bret! I saw the American wrestling fans as the REAL "bad guys".

I agree. I was only a little american kid and I couldn't believe all the commentators started ripping him up and all the tools in the crowd started believing it. They can't think for themselves, much like how they cheer for John Cena now.

There was a promo on raw where Bret just went off and started swearing all over the place and screaming, something he had never done, and that really alienated a lot of his fans. He lost a lot of fans to Austin because he was being put over as the new face with attitude. Bret never really had any good competition in the babyface department until Austin and Michaels.

@cataphracts123 - I know what promo you are talking about and by that point, many American fans were already booing him long before he did that. I think most American wrestling fans just got tired of good guys and wanted to see something different. Many American boys who cheered for wrestlers like Bret as kids were becoming angry teenagers and they were being rebels towards everyone and everything from their youth and wanted to make a statement to the adults that they were not babies anymore.

@Zeeboe Yeah, that's true to some degree, but Bret's appeal still spanned numerous generations from kids to adults. I was still a kid when he did his heel turn, and I was stunned. I stopped watching wrestling for years because of it.

Do you think it could have also been that by then wrestling was growing bigger, and it brought in different kinds of fans, and these newer fans were attracted to the more edgy characters like Austin?

@cataphracts123 - Even though I an an American and Bret did have American fans at that time, it was mostly Americans who started booing him. Almost everyone else around the world still cheered for Bret and booed Stone Cold. I think what you said is true, but also what I said was true as well. Some fans were tired of heros, some fans wanted to be rebels, some fans were just being trendy and maybe there were some new fans like you said that wanted to cheer for an anti-hero instead of a hero.

@Zeeboe Couldn't say that better myself. They wanted more anti-hero's than actual heros. Around the mid 90's, tweaner wrestlers started to become more common. Bret even documented that himself.

@KADG81 He is NOTHING like Bret. Bret can wrestle. Bret had better storylines. Cena has never gotten pops like Bret would get. Cena is the most overrated champion of all time in the WWF (thats right WWF). Bret deserved the accolades he received. Cena is a 5 move Hulk Hogan all over again, but fans got bored of Hogan a long time ago. This is the age of the anti hero - the Stone Cold type. People boo Cena because he is like Justin Bieber - talentless.
