  • I watched this movie as an 11-12 year old. I'd love to watch it again and when my children watch an adaptation of The Secret Garden on the screen, I wish they could have the chance to see this version. Perhaps this was the first o'Brien movie I ever saw.

  • which reminds me kathryn played a really small role in this movie!

  • i cant believe margaret was close 2 being alice in disneys alice! her voice is just creepy! thank goodness 4 kathryn beaumont the real voice of alice!

  • The garden scenes were originally in color, just like the Wizard of Oz. they were not colorized.

  • The crying, screaming angry boy, her cousin was played by Dean Stockwell- better known as Al from Quantum Leap. Here he is just 12 years young!

  • i didnt know M.O.B did this, or rather i have forgotten, never seen it. i was introduced to this story by the hallmark hall of fame television version.

  • I had to turn the volume down during the screaming part! I was afraid my father was going to hear and become alarmed. ^^

  • WHERE DO I FIND THE TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES

  • why is this version so hard to find?

  • filmed in mono or black and white if you will, BUT when it comes to the garden in bloom its colourised film so the effect is fantastic

  • and still the best version

  • I LOVE this movie; such a great actress at such a young age.

  • Thanks TCM, I now have this Movie on DVD. : )

  • @2point6x4 Yay! It really needs an official DVD release, doesn't it? It's definitely a classic.

  • @storyjan I agree, If they released this Movie on official DVD I would buy it. : )

  • Set your VCRs and DVRs! On Aug. 15, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is featuring Margaret O'Brien movies all day as part of their Summer Under the Stars series. They will be airing the following movies: Dr. Gillespie’s Criminal Case, Music for Millions, Tenth Avenue Angel, Her First Romance, Journey for Margaret, Canterville Ghost, Meet Me in St. Louis, Little Women, Secret Garden, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, Bad Bascomb, Heller in Pink Tights, and Big City.

  • @storyjan You are very simply a wonderful person for letting us all know that TCM will be airing the great Secret Garden...Only afew weeks ago I checked through their site and there was no mention of it...So thankyou. X

  • @looselywired No problem! Since hardly any of Margaret's starring movies are available on DVD, I thought fans would appreciate a heads up. I've been waiting forever to see Big City :)

  • this film has the mystrey and suspense of the original book. I have loved it since seeing it on TV in the 1960s

  • Best version ever! There had always been some extra magic here with the black and white colour theme...Thanks for posting it. I am still searching for this...

  • WOW! What a great post! I need this film. It's an all time favorite,

  • Brian Roper (Dickon) was actually around 18/19 years when this was filmed; He looked like 12 or 14 years old here.

  • THE SECRET GARDEN is such a poignant story; all the three versions that I have seen have moved me to tears.

M O'Brien was such a lovely little girl, with such a sweet sad voice and eyes.

  • That girl at the beginning is annoying hahah I just wanna say "Well whoop de doo and ladee dah for you!"

  • this is the best one ever!!

  • I like the 1993 version much better, sorry to say... it's more magical and powerful,, but the actors are great. especially Margaret O'Brien!

  • yep..i feel the same way. The 1993 version was indeed magical

  • too bad, it is all a sound stage. They didn't use a lot of outdoor scenes in those days which is a pity since there would have been hundreds of beautiful gardens to choose from in ENGLAND.

  • No way, guys. The 1993 version is not better, not to mention that the soundtrack doesn't even come close to this one.

  • OMG dickon's face is freakin' scary!!! he looks like a bloody puppet!!!

  • omg the screaming contest scene was amazing. I bet the actors lost their voice doing that.

  • I just adore this movie. I particularly love Margaret O'Brien. My favorite movie is Meet Me In Saint Louis. I once met Jadrien Steele when he was six years old. He went hiking with the Brownie/Girl scout troop I lead. He starred in the 1987 version of The Secret Garden.

  • if you like the secret garden, check my videos, they are all about this wonderful film (the 1993 edition), and i sing winter light. Thank you!

  • I have to say, the 1993 version is better. More magical, but Margaret O'Brien did well in this!

  • The 1993 version is better, Mary seems too angry all the time.

  • I don't quite know if I like this interprtation of Mary, at leas tnot in the begining she seemed even more cruel and sour than she really was in the book. Considering I don't recall her saying 'I'll tear out your gizzard!" at uh anytime...lol.

  • she´s ok. I mean she acts very good. And I like her because I have a similar personality as Mary.

  • Well im telling my age here, but i saw this when it first came out. A very good movie.

  • Dickon's face looks really scary... and I agree, it is a lot like wizard of oz with the technicolor effect... the music is also similar - a little scary.. but margaret was a strong child actress for her time

  • where can i see the whole thing?

  • Turner Classic movies has right to it check their schedule it come on in early morning hours sometime

  • Lame! the 1993 version is sooo way better than this one. Its more touching and magical. this one has too many anger scenes.

  • i think i like 93 secret garden better it is awsome and also its just like wizard of oz how when they go into the garden its color like when dorothy goes into oz its color

  • no her most memorable performance was in meet me in st. louis but this could be her 2nd memorable

  • does any1 see the resemblance of collin & nick jonas?

  • dicken looks like christian slater

  • and he is great at the tantrum scene I am too lol

  • lol true lol I love my best friend he plays colin in our play

  • Where i can see this movie?? or where i can dowland it?? i think Colin is cute..=)..is like a baby...

  • holy crap i would hate to have to clean that mess up from that tantrum I am in the secret garden play now and I play mary that tantrum sene was great we really worked hard on it lol

  • that boy needs anger management. man, they made some weird movies in 40's...

  • this movie looks kinda scary! lol

  • god! a tantrum from a 13-year-old. that's original. of course, dean was playing a ten-year-old.

  • i used to have tantrums like colin when i was a kid.

  • The actor who played Dickon (Brian Roper) was 20 years old at the time of the release. Margaret and Dean were still children (12 and 13).

  • whoa how many years did it take to release it after they made it?

  • i think they made and released it all in the same year, maybe filmed a little in the end of 1948.

  • then...dickon was 20 when they made this??

  • actually he was 19, but close enough. the film was released in april of 1949 and his birthday was in august (1929).

  • God...he looks around like 15

  • yeah, that's true. not everyone looks their age. if he were alive today, he'd be 79.

  • i'm sorry, but i think she overdid it. don't agree with me if you don't feel the same way.

  • I just watched this on TCM! She's so freaking good!! (maybe except for the English accent at some parts...) Thanks for uploading this!

  • TCM 3-21-08 Friday:

10:45 PM Secret Garden, The (1949) An orphaned girl changes the lives of those she encounters at a remote estate. Cast: Margaret O'Brien, Herbert Marshall, Dean Stockwell. Dir: Fred M. Wilcox. BW-92 mins, TV-G, CC, DVS

  • Oh my lord, that's Al from QUantum Leao (colin) he's been in the business for all this time! He was amazing even as a kid!

  • i used to love this movie.

    ♥

  • A great reason why no one should ever colorize the old classic movies. My mom said people were astonished when the garden was shown in color. She was in the theater when this movie was shown.

  • Oh this movie was and still is a true classic and Margaret O'Brien is wonderful.

    Thank you storyjan.

  • omg it's so awesome when Margaret O'Brien and the guy who played Colin did the screaming scene :)

  • colin is played by dean stockwell. they are both in their seventies now.

  • i think it's kind of funny.

  • Caught the film on TCM earlier this month. Very good, Margaret O Brien is fantastic and so is Dean Stockwell. Beautiful film!

  • Thanks, storyjan :D

  • I've been trying to find this film for quite a while, so it's great to see these clips. Maragart O'Brien and Dean Stockwell are so good and I hope I can find the rest of the film soon.

  • Keep checking the Turner Classic Movies web site. You can have them send you an email the next time the movie airs. Oddly enough, this movie is usually popular during the holiday season.
