You only have to lower his AP by a slight amount. Like heartachecure, all you really have to do is ignore him for a few weeks, or maybe a season. Giving him red grass isn't the ONLY way to activate this, though that is a way to activate it because he hates the item.

I've played this game through quite a few times, and I know that all you have to do is ignore him for a while or give him an item he hates. :/ This event can be triggered with all bachelors, and the only way to trigger it is NOT just by giving them red grass. There are several things you can do. :/
