  • AWESOME!!!

  • OMG this was EXTREMELY helpful ! :)

  • Love your videos but have a question I can't find the answer to. I am writting an APA formatted essay and I do have some subheadings in my essay. Do I triple space or double space before the heading? Also are the headings suppose to be centered on the line or are they suppose to be flush left and underlined? Not sure as I have seen examples of both done so wanted to verify with you before I finished this essay.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • @dusty41497 --->> Everything in an APA style paper is double spaced only unless you have been told differently by your instructor. So remove that third blank line. On subtitles, there are various levels, each of which looks different. If you are using Level 1 headings, they are centered, capitalized like titles, and boldfaced--just like in the videos. For a more complex use of subtitles, you should Google "APA subtitles" and get them sorted out. Best of luck!

  • Thanks for shedding light!

  • Thanks very much! I've used MLA for my entire college career until now. You just kept me from spending an anxious weekend waiting to get to the writing lab!

  • @druno82 ---->> YVW. For your reference citations, try the Bedford Bibliographer (I have a YouTube tutorial on it). For in-text citations, it's always (Author, year) with a comma between. If there is no author, use shortened version of source title punctuated normally.

  • @mynaps01 BOMBS AWAY! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your good words.

  • I wish you could post a similar video on teaching people how to set up a paper using APA style using Open Office instead of Microsoft Word.

  • This is awesome!

  • @CCguhl ---->> Thanks!

  • This is great!! It's VERY helpful to my community college students--thank you!

  • Is this video copyrighted? If so, I would like permission to use it in my class.

  • @notanignoramus --->> It is free to embed and share in any way you wish. Just click on Share button below the video. Good luck with APA!

  • APA editing and proofreading services offered here. Just copy this link and paste it in the youtube browser. Very affordable prices for professional editing.

  • This guy sounds like Jeff Bridges man!

  • Thank you for the great explanation!

  • If you are writing an apa style essay but the only citations you have are from personal communications is it necessary to add a reference page?

  • @proudlatina1985 -- a reference page is not necessary. personal communications are cited only in the text of your paper.

  • I'd post a screen shot, but the comment thing won't let me.

  • no, when you get to the references, after typing the word references and going back to the 'align left' then you select paragraph from the ribbon menu and there's a hanging indent option. takes care of that section that needs a hanging indent.

  • Cat --->> Seems that there are multiple ways to create indentations for references. My recommendation is not to use any of them. Instead, let a citation machine like Bedford Bibliographer do it for you it.

  • @peakdavid you still have to tweak it and it costs money to use it? unless i am mistaken

  • @peakdavid Am not real sure how Bedford works, but what i've seen is some kind of pay ment is required? pls correct me if i'm wrong. Long story short, regardless of how we set the hanging indent, may i have permission to use your video in my APA presentations to nursing students? please and thank you in advance.

  • @NTCat7 Yes, by all means, you can use the video in any way that you wish. The Bedford Citation machine is free and is the only citation machine I am aware of that provides 100% accurate APA referencecitations. I have a YouTube tutorial on it: youtube.com/watch?v=7xQA_6X8gfc The Bedford actual creates a Word document of references that students can download and add to their paper.

  • @peakdavid Thank you so much, she said as she scurried off to invesigate the Bedford

  • I've been teaching APA for 25 years now and this video is AMAZING!!!!!!!

One question, why don't you give directions for a hanging indent on the references? it would be so much easier that moving that tab arrow every time. Thanks for doing this

  • @NTCat7 ---->>> Thanks for the good words. You asked: :why don't you give directions for a hanging indent on the references? " Do you mean using the tab key for each reference?

  • @peakdavid no, if you use the paragraph tab from the ribbon, there's an option for a 'hanging indent; under indents and spacing, 'indentation'

can't seem to post a screen shot to this, it would make it clearer

  • I could not have written my paper without this, thank you so much

  • @ProvesYouWrong --->>> Very nice of you to stop by and say that. Appreciate your words. You are most welcome.

  • @luvGod765 --- Am not aware of a 7th edition of APA, although the MLA style guide is currently in its 7th edition.

  • I have word 2010 and this was very true to the environment as well, I had no problem following it. Thank you so much for this little video!

  • @Ishkiia --- > Thanks for watching. Am working on a 2010 version. But, like you said, not much difference.

  • THANKYOU! God, the amount of Jibberish on Apa Format is ridiculous! Especially when it comes to Formatting Word 2010. Bleh.... THANKS A Million!

  • Thanks for the reminder! Need to do a Word 2010 version.

  • I noticed you did not add the date, class, or instructors name to the title page, is this something that is new with the 6th edition? Thank you for a great video, and by the way, my instructor shared your link in her welcome email! Way to go!

  • Sham-->you should put on your title page exactly what your teacher requires. The title page in this vid has only those three items in the info block (full title, name, school affiliation) because that's what APA 6th has, but a teacher can always override that.

  • I noticed you did not add the date, class, or instructors name to the title page, is this something that is new with the 6th edition? Thank you for a great video, and by the way, my instructor shared your link in her welcome email! Way to go!

  • Another discrepancy occurs towards the end of your awesome video.

In the reference list section, you included the word "The" in the journal name. It is my understanding this word is omitted in a reference list citation. Also, you end by showing the url of a journal's homepage, but the formatting must be removed (i.e., no underline, black) and preceded by "Retrieved from" (see APA 7.01 #3). Finally, students must check pagination - only include the issue number if the journal paginates by issue.

  • @dmazingo --> Thanks for your comments. In a publication title, "The" is retained if that word is a part of an official title, e.g., The New York Times. In the screen recording, you are correct: I should have shown the hyperlink being removed and "Retrieved from" being added. Hopefully will have more time on the next one.

  • NO NO NO, you do NOT remove the hypertext link

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you

  • THANK YOU!

  • Hi david , i was wondering if you have one of these videos for doing the same thing in microsoft office 2010 , Ive found this video so helpful when i had my last laptop wwith word 2007 on it , but now ive had to reformat and buy a new code for 2010 office , is there anyway you could point me in the right direction when formating in APA 6th ed , for word 2010 ? Thanks again.

  • Hi, rip--just sent this message as a reply to your PM. Yes, was hoping to do APA for Word 2010 this weekend or next week. Stay tuned. If you're a subscriber, I'll send out a broadcast.

  • Is this the most recent format? I see that the other comments are not that old but my teacher told me to find the most recent.

  • night--yes, 6th edition, 2nd printing is the latest.

  • My online instructor advised for us to use this video for instruction on APA formatting. You did a great job, and I greatly appreciate your information. Thanks!!

  • Thanks, bram. Best of luck in your classes.

  • Awesome!! Thank you very much!

  • @MegaLemonFish >> You're welcome. Good luck with your writing!

  • Love it! My school is using it

  • Cool!

  • Wow! Great video. I just started taking an online college course and they had a link to your video. I am going to subscribe to your videos! You make it so clear! Thanks!

  • -- > @bigdad1211 <-- Thanks, bigdad. Good luck with your course and let me know however I can help!

  • I am following this to a T, but my page numbers are cooperating. It starts with #3 instead of #2 on second page like it should. Any ideas?

  • @xTBGxGaming what version of Word are you using? Something hinky is going on. If I were you, I'd copy and paste my text to a Notepad or Text document, open up a new Word document, and start over from the beginning of the video. Title page is #1, abstract page is #1, first body page is #3. Also, download and use this template: peakwriting period com back slash aiu back slash APATemplate period docx

  • @peakdavid

I understand that you are using Microsoft Office Word 2007. Your video really helped me for my upcoming papers. Ok now , I'm not clear about how do I get a copy of the text in your video to paste it on a document for reference?

  • @100hm43700 ---->> You want to cite the video in your references? If that's the case, just Google: APA 6th edition in-text citation YouTube video. Use the format shown in the example. Good luck!

  • @peakdavid

Thanks David, I was trying to format my paper based on your instructions on the video. I was able to do it by pausing the video then switch to a 2007 Word Doc and it worked ! Your tips have real helped me to prepare

  • Good stuff. However, what if I can't find some of these settings on the version of Word that I have? :\

  • @littleroom333 -- What version of Word do you have and which settings can't you find? If you have Word 97, there is not a "line before/after paragraph" but that's the only one I know of. The others can be found.

  • Great video and sexy voice :)

  • if you only knew haha

  • You seriously saved my life! (and my grade) Thanks so much!

  • @alymtz89 -- Whew! Glad you're OK. Death by APA can be pretty gruesome.

  • Thank you very much!!! Excellent video!

  • @malipinto17 -- You are very welcome! Let me know anything else you'd like to see.

  • Thank you David. I guess I need to subscribe to the PeakDavid Channel. You are the best adjunct I have ever had!

    Cynthia Chandler, EDT, National University

  • @drcsistekchandler -- Hey, Cynthia. Thank you for those wonderful words. Also thanks for the wonderful opportunity you've given me to do something I love.

  • Great video. Thanks for posting!

  • Thank you! Very helpul.

  • nice references

  • Very informative and HELPFUL and to the point. Thanks for posting.

  • peakdavid - I really liked this presentation. Just have a question...what about the date of the paper? Not necessary?

  • @dendeca100 -- The video presents guidelines from the book, APA 6th Ed. 2nd printing. But teachers, departments, schools, publications can alter and add to those guidelines as they wish. So anyone receiving your work can request that you put on a date or make some other alteration to the basic guidelines. Hope that helps!

  • @dendeca100 Nope. Dates are not required in APA, oddly enough.

  • Exremely helpful video! Thank you for posting this!

  • This is EXCELLENT. I am recommending it to all of my graduate students. Thank you for this very helpful instructional video. Dr. Cox

  • @ghcapnc -- Thanks for the good words, Dr. Cox, and the recommendations. The video can also be embedded on any html page for your students.

  • Thank you.(=

  • @pearandtoast -- G'day. You're welcome and thanks for watching!

  • Great source of help.

  • @torres427 -- Great to hear!

  • What program are you using to make this video, if you don't mind sharing. . .?

  • @violonycello -- not at all. Screen recording was done with Camtasia Studio.

  • @ peakdavid: Thank you so much for the upload. I need a favor. I have to cite (in APA format) your youtube video for a presentation that i am making. May i know your name so that i can put that as the author, or you wouldn't mind if i simply use peakdavid? Thanks in advance^^

  • @tzr1791 -- David Taylor, the creator. But don't forget to also use my user name as the poster of the video.

  • @peakdavid Thank you very much^^ *runs off to do the citation*:)

  • I came.

  • @bomberfun1 -- me too.

  • May God Bless you for this, it can't get any clearer. I'm going to post this on my facebook page for everyone to tune in who's struggling with APA writing style like I was.

  • @ystrick7 --that's great to hear! And thank you for the blessings. I thank God everyday for the life I've been given and will take all the prayer and blessings I can get!

  • Great video! I'm going to share with our students! Thanks so much for putting this together! ;-)

  • @rfisher2861 --hey, thanks for the good words and thanks for sharing. If you see anything else on the channel you can use, be sure to help yourself!

  • I'd recognize that voice any where

  • LOLZ. Me too.

  • Glad it worked for you jenjen.

  • I'm using older version of Word (2003). When I go to to the next page and type in the header again (without the running head word), the running head word in the first page is gone. Is this ok? Does is really disappear when you go to the next page?

  • WOW!!! MANY THANKS.

  • You are very welcome! Let me know however I can help.

  • @peakdavid -Much appreciated.

  • Please, Do I need to write an abstract in Literature review in new APA 6th edition format

  • @tayorsnr81 -- Whether or not you need an abstract for a literature review would depend on what your professor and assignment require. Contact your teacher and ask this exact question. The answer also may be on your assignment directions. If you can't get a firm answer, do an abstract to be safe. You can always say that "APA made me do it." 8-)

  • @peakdavid . Thank you very much

  • @peakdavid BUT THE ABSTRACT CONTAINS THE RESULTS ALREADY. HOW ABOUT IN A THESIS PROPOSAL?

  • MsAeps--as you note, the abstract for a thesis proposal is unique. It usually contains Research context, Purpose & objectives pf the selected topic, Importance, Hypothetical and methodological framework, Research plan. But different schools, programs, even thesis committees can have their own requirements which you should follow. You should have been given a complete set of instructions for this assignments and others in your graduate program.

  • stupid question.. but when you print in black and white is the sitations suppose to be blue?

  • @Xicedragonnx -- if you are printing a paper copy in black and white, then the citations cannot be in blue, only blacks or shades of grey.

  • Thank you. This was very helpful.

  • @Aldind2x -- you are very welcome. Thanks for watching! Good luck.

  • @Aldind2x this is very helpful!!!

  • You forgot for quotes, you need a page number for in-text citations. Very important!

  • @sandbar3000 -- thx for your comment, sandbar. This video doesn't cover in-text citation guidelines (because of old 10:00 rule). For sources that display them, page numbers are included with an in-text citation for a direct quote. If page numbers are not visible on the source, then paragraph numbers are used. If those aren't present, then headings are used. If headings aren't used, . . . . All of this is explained in section 6.05 of APA Sixth.

  • @peakdavid, yeah, I'm purchasing the APA 6th Edition book come Jan 2011. I have been using the 2004 book - that includes APA and MLA. The author of this book died a few years back - her name is Diana Hacker and her book is called the Bedford Handbook. Shame this book is not up to date with the 6th edition to APA (at least not that I know about). The Bedford Handbook got me through all of my reports for APA 5th Edition when I was in my undergrad.

  • @sandbar3000 -- as I tell my students, be sure to use whatever edition your publication, school or professor asks for, 5th or 6th. The customer is always right. And you'll be happy to know that Hacker's various handbooks are in good hands with Nancy Sommers, and the 8th Ed. of Bedford has the 2009 MLA and 2010 APA updates.

  • @peakdavid, oh very cool. I'll have to be sure to purchase Nancy Sommers 8th Edition. My school (Arogsy) does not let us know what edition to use for APA, 5th or 6th. Some instructors don't really care, just as long as the references are there. However, I think it is best that all are standarized with the same requirement for all classes.

  • Woot!

  • Thankkss!

  • @iiddgg -- a pleasurz

  • orrr you can go to google and type in "termpapergurus"...and get professional help for your essays and referencing..

  • @GreastMonkey -- Careful that no one writes papers for you. If caught, that could mean a one-way ticket on the "Highway to Hell."

  • Excellent video. Very well described! Thank you.

  • @MEHDIZFLOWER -- UR welcome, flower. Thanks for watching!

  • Love it, I wish I have saw it before i turned in my proposal paper, I am quite sure I would of gotten a better grade. I was having trouble with the APA formating of the reference page.

    Thanks

  • @msjenny420 -- you got deductions for APA format? What problems were there? Also, the very best tool for Reference page citations is the Bedford Bibliographer. See my videos here on YouTube for it.

  • Very helpful! I have a queston though! How do you cite and properly reference a Microsoft PowerPoint (or similar type) visual presentation according to APA sixth edition? I have the author, date written and retreived and URL, so do I need to add in that here are 1-25 slides. I ask because I want to cite certain slides and I have the titles on the slides and cooresponing numbers written down, but do not know how to procede further.

  • @krheat6777 -- heat, go to Google and type in "apa citation powerpoint presentation" or "apa citation powerpoint lecture" -- you'll see dozens of examples of how to do this.

  • @peakdavid Thank you so much! With your help, I found exactly what I was looking for in regards to proper citation.

  • @krheat6777 -- excellent!

  • Very helpful, Thank you so much! I will put this on my favorites!
