Is the balalaika similar to a mandolin?

No. Balalaika has 3 strings usually, while Mandolin 4 double strings.

Actually, just two.  Or almost two. Third and second strings are tuned the same. Unreal, huh?.. Yup. The simpler the tool, the more skill it demands.
