Wow. I liked it a lot. I think it is much simpler than most people are speculating. One of Makoto Shinkai's most common themes throughout his works is separation, and the loneliness that comes from it. I think that this short piece is trying to show us the deepest worry of a woman in love; that her lover (man or woman) doesn't love her back, and will leave for their 'true' partner one day. A beautiful short about the anxiety love brings.

@MewWolf5 My interpretation is that the two people are involved in some sort of forbidden love, such as siblings or same gender (since they don't show much of the second person, they could also be female). Society will not accept the relationship they have, which brings about the girl's fear that the other person will find their "true other half", or a lover whom the world could wholly accept.

Terrible choice of piece (Gymnopedie 1), which is so overused it isn't even funny. Just about any Chopin Nocturne (except Op 9 No 2), or even some Rachmaninoff would have been a superior choice. Mediocre story. 4/10 as far as short films go.

Blatantly superior to the gilded turd that is 5cm/s.
