  • consider only re-doing the front and top of your hair every 2 weeks and leaving the rest in longer to save time :)

  • @alniea

Hi there! Thanks the suggestion! This is a good idea and you are right, it would save time and prevent the build-up from occurring in those areas of my head!

  • @nappynfree the OUIDAD comb is amazing . It's two rows of teeth its expensive but unbreakable and completely worth it !

  • @heiress1

I just took a look at the comb. I am intrigued.....:-) I may try it!

  • What might help is to use apple cider vinger rinse and a cleanser.....look up acv rinse on youtude some sista swear by it...check it out

  • @BeautifulBlknLoc

Thanks for the tip! I didn't realize ACV may help with the build up.

  • I love your chunky yarn twists! Do you have a tutorial on how to do them or can you tell me who does? Thanks!

  • @20pearlsNcurls

I have a vid on how I did the chunky yarn twists! Go to my channel and select the yarn twists playlist. It is in there or just type in YT's search engine "chunky yarn twists."

  • Hello NappyNFree! I just suscribed to your channel after watching this video. I was wondering if you ever tried using olive oil at the base of your twists to loosen up the buildup before takeing down your hair. You can apply the oil at the base of your twists and then gently massage it into your hair. When you start to take the twists apart or even while detangling you can apply more oil as needed. This will help the buildup slide down the hairshaft more easily. I hope this helps!

  • @ugreene1

HEY! This is a great (great, great, great, great) suggestion. I wil definitely try it! (It is almost like a DUH moment for me! :-) Thanks for sharing and thanks for subbing!

  • Buy a detangling comb that has 2 sets of teeth (not a wide tooth comb). It helps A LOT. Also, did you wash your scalp during the braids? And when you removed the braids, did you use conditioner?

  • @PeaceUdo

Hey lady! Where do you find a detangling comb with two rows of teeth? I use to use a diluted shampoo, but the last time I wore yarn twists, I started using a ayurvedic cleasning tea. I have begun using conditioner while taking out the yarn, too. However, these preventive measures have occurred AFTER the darn breakage! *sigh*

  • @NappyNFree Buy it at Sally's!! Wish u lived here I would give u my coupon cuz I am not buying anything at Sally's this month. Its probably 2 - 5 bucks. Its now a HG item of my hair care.

  • @PeaceUdo

That is not a bad price, even without the coupon. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks!

  • You are such a beautiful person!! (: i love this channel, and don't use yarn twist but i just enjoy watching you!!

  • @aauroraaCandyCanee

Well, gee! I am speechless. This comment has just made my evening!!!! Thank you very, very much! :-)

  • OMG, this is ingenious! Thank you SOOOOO much. I love yarn too, but in the last 4 months I have NOT been able to find 8 hrs to put in another set. I was afraid that doing big sections would look scalpy and just plain bad but I looked at your chunky twist video and they look great!

I've always taken them out after 12 days because of itchy, grungy, fuzzy roots, but next time, I will feel OK about taking them out cuz 4 hours = 20 minutes as you say! :D

P.S. Check out/enter my contest! Thanks!

  • @TheSupasweet

HEY! I am sorry I haven't been watching your vids! I have been busy with work and class. This particular class ended on Wednesday, but summer semester starts next Thursday (big yuck). I will definitely go check out your contest.

I am glad the tips help. I have thin hair and that was my worry, too. I just keep the front up (don't like how it looks down) and everything looks non-scalpy. :-)

  • Hey Free!! Missed you, Sis :)

  • @mking214

Hey girl! Class and work have been kicking my tail. I am behind in my youtube stuff! :-)

  • To lessen the product build up, use a water based moisturizer. I use an aloe, glycerin and distilled water spritz which works well. Not as much build up. Great testimony!

  • @capria30

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely try it!

  • I used to wear lots of extensions in the past and build up was an issue for me also. My mom is great at avoiding buildup because she takes her braids out after 2 weeks, whether or not they need to be removed.

  • @AfroMohawkable

Okay, it is good to hear that I am on the right track with taking them down every two weeks! Moms always know what to do!

  • Thank you 4 this video!! I have the same complaint with build up! I hate it! I keep my ybs in for 6-7 wks and its crazy. The set i have in now i used less product just water and doo gro spray and its still there! I know my hair feels dry also but its a catch 22! Mor oils/products= build up and acne :( idk what 2 do lol! But ima take a break also from them.

  • @TEDDIESandANGEL

I know! Build up SUCKS. I think conditioner is a big culprit. So, if you are using conditioner on the roots of your hair, that means build up city! The last two times I wore YB, I avoided my roots when applying conditioner. That seemed to help. But I think keeping them in for two weeks at a time will eliminate the build up. Here's only hoping!

  • @someoneblessed

I am glad to have helped. I almost didn't upload the video!

Our hair would do just fine if we could eliminate the ME factor, huh???? :-)

  • how big are your sections and how much yarn do you use for your chunky twists??? I would be more likely to do them more often if they didnt take 4 days to put in...LOL

  • @Jojoleesmity

Hi there! I use four strands of yarn for each section and the section are medium-sized. I have a vid of how I did it for the first time. It is on my channel in the yarn twists playlist. I hope it helps!

  • I am no expert by no means but when I remove my yarn braids, I finally figured out how to remove the (buildup from the hair) and it is so simply and easy but takes a few seconds...With a small tooth stiff comb, back a few strains of your hair out from the buildup knot, don't comb forward until hair is free from that buildup knot, don't use any products.

  • @hotpeachjuicy

So, you first you comb towards your scalp to remove the hair? That is interesting and if (please, not when!) I encounter build up, I will try that. Thanks for sharing!

  • dude I had the same prob...and I feel ya on every word you said and Im following that same routine now

  • @andycamoon

It is the PITS! Too bad we have to learn (horribly!) from these mistakes! But whatcha gonna do? :-)

  • very very logical. Thanks. I keep getting breakage from my extensions so I'd like to see how this works out for you! good luck!

  • @bmw0688

The next time I put in yarn twists and take them out, I will let you know!

  • Hey there,

I am sorry about the breakage. I have not figured out how to do yard twists yet. I have practiced a couple of times, but my fingers would not cooperate :-). I will certainly keep this video in mind when I finally master yarn twists.

  • @TheNaturalmystery

Keep practicing; it will get easier. My first few attempts were terrible! LOL. But I kept practicing and practicing.

  • sorry to hear about your damage but glad you got a revelation on what maybe causing the damage.. take care, babes ~ good to see you!

  • @MISSDEEDEVINE1

Hey lady! Girl, I am not happy at all (sigh). But it is a journey and we learn from our mistakes and keep it moving! Thank for watching!

  • AMEN!!! AMEN!!! I need to give you an offering girl lol! I actually stopped doing the whole trying to get rid of the buildup, I just coat the hair with some cheap conditioner after I come out of my extensions. I actually use FEMI hair, however, I protect my hair before applying that hair though. Yep, patience is key girl, and using less products too, but you can't get away from moisturizing your hair while they are in the extensions.

  • @VickyVue

You are too funny!!!! My first laugh of the day!

Girl, I didn't realize the damage I was doing to my hair! That is what I started doing, too, the last few times I wore the yarn...slathering on lots of conditioner and very carefully pulling out the build up. I am so mad at myself. All I can see now when I look at my hair are these little pieces of hair sticking up all over!

*screams like a banjee and leaves the comments section* :-)

  • @NappyNFree lol!!!! you are a hoot! girl I love you!!!! continue on your journey girl, you know that I'm rooting for you!
