Unfortunately men like him aren't viable in politics of any type, and when they do get elected their time is short because they won't break the rules to keep power. I wish most politicians were like President Hayes and Washington, hesitant to rule and finding it an almost distasteful experience but answering the call for the public good. It'd be a nice change from these geriatric wanabe rockstars who hold onto their positions for 50 years doing next to nothing but spend the public's money.
President Hayes doesn't get enough credit imo. Despite the 1877 Compromise (which some dispute happened) he was a pretty honest and independent guy and was able to work for what he thought was right instead of spending most of his time kissing ass, handing out favors & trying to make himself look good in order to get re-elected. In addition to civil service reform he also vetoed a bill that would ban immigration from China because he felt it was racist, & made efforts to curb wasteful spending.
