If Paterno hadn't kicked it so damn deep, maybe none of this nightmare would have happened. The hell Joe! And the last pass, throwing it through all those defenders. PSU broke down something awful after their TD in the 4th.
i hate michigan with a passion since im a notre dame fan...but i hate penn state more....but i will admit this was a good game and that was a good play to that manigham guy
Asked and answered, over and over and over and over again. Go back to the beginning of the comment thread, where I talk about emailing a NCAA FB referee with this very question.
Memo to Penn State fans: congratulations on your win Saturday. I wish them well the rest of the season (better them winning the BCS than some SEC team or, God forbid, USC).
And I'll cut you some slack because you're not accustomed to beating Michigan and thus may not know how to act when you do. However, if you insist on gloating about it like dicks, I'll have to post highlight videos from 2002 and 2001. And 2000. And 1999 and 1998 and 1997.
Really, I saw the losing streak as a fluke that needed to be corrected, like the losing streak to Iowa before 2007. There were a few times (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007) that Penn State could have won, but unfortunately brought their B-game, played Michigan down to the wire, but ultimately lost. And that fluke was corrected on Saturday. Penn State should have been beating Michigan more often, since they're both good programs.
LOL...Penn State is no average MAC team...oh wait, Michigan loses to those teams as well. Penn State is going to literally step on Michigan's scrawny neck on Saturday.
i thought this was going 2 be an actual hightlight reel. But this was a great game except for one problem. THE REFF'S SUCKED. Not only against Penn state but also against michigan 2. Both teams got bad calls but the worse was the timeout call. Y? Cuz the rules state the time out is called whn the reff's see it. Not whn carr said he made it. Who would have thought 2 seconds would have made such a difference.
God penn state is so bad, even if they won this game they wouldn't have played for the Nnational Championship over Texas or USC, stop kidding yourselves. Your team was not that good in 05, you lose to a 7-5 Michigan team, barely beat a BAD... A BAD Northwestern team on a 4th down last second play rofl, and you struggle against a mediocre Florida state team in the bowl game and barely win on the random overtime missed field goal showdown. Lol.
The only thing that would have kept us out of the Rose Bowl would be poll voters. We only struggled with Northwestern a bit because we needed to build our confidence. The 7-5 Michigan was 20 seconds away from being 2nd in the Big 10. And that was a very underrated Florida State team. USC and Texas were overrated. Texas struggled with an OSU that PSU destroyed. PSU would have beaten either USC or Texas. And why not set it up that way? Not like we never had a one-loss national champion before.
PSU of 05 wouldn't have beaten USC or Texas come off your high horse and look at reality, as well PSU did not destroy OSU in 05 it was a very tight game. final score was PSU 17 OSU 10 I guess your definition and mine of destroy are different, and the Texas ore was 25-22 Texas visited OSU and OSU was at PSU you mean to tell me 4 points plus different home field advantages means PSU was better than Texas get real.
There's a good chance that PSU would have beaten Texas or USC. I'm not saying it would have been a 77-14 wipeout, but it could have gone either way. The OSU game was no blowout, I admit it, but it was only close because of field conditions. On a clear night, Penn State would have won something like 38-21. And that was a good Ohio State team, too. That year, Penn State could have beaten Ohio State in the Horseshoe, but it would have been a similar 4 point difference, but with a score of 17-14.
And it's not like other teams never struggled with shitty teams before. How about Ohio State with Akron this past year? And Michigan losing to a bad Minnesota team that was just a sacrificial lamb for Penn State?
Also, about that Florida State game, we still managed to win with us making critical mistakes that normally would have cost us the game AND with two key injuries (Tony Hunt and Paul Pusluzney).
And we only lost to that 7-5 Michigan team because of questionable calls anyway.
Now this is coming from a PITT fan Michigan in the near future please keep on kicking Penn State's ASS, because we can't because crazy old ass JOEPA is afraid to play PITT
yeah i meen there could of been four seconds instead of one and u still could of stopped us didnt u have the 4rth best defense in the country in 05 once u beat us u can make fun all u want
forget about the 2 seconds that should NOT have been put back on the clock. the play calling was so biased all game. A Ineligible receiver for michigan scored a TD!! SHITBAG refs. If you step out of bounds you can't come back in to catch a touchdown pass.
Why doesn't this show any PSU highlights or how Michigan got two seconds back because the coach whined to the refs (not because they called the timeout in time)?
Also asked and answered, over and over again. Executive summary: had those two seconds not been put back on the clock, Michigan would most likely have run the exact same play, from exactly the same spot on the field, with *four* seconds remaining instead of one (i.e., they would have thrown into the end zone instead of throwing the incomplete pass to Breaston at the :06 mark).
damn i still remember the eruption in the stadium after that play, everyone in the Big House going crazy.... except, of course, the Ninny Lions who just looked kinda puzzled and dejected. oh well maybe your luck will change one of these years.... if you believe in miracles

The 7-5 Michigan team wasn't a typical 7-5 team, they played OSU the closest they'd played them in years, winning 21-19 until the final seconds. And every team has their strange struggles, this year's OSU struggled with a shitty Michigan State team. And Florida State played their heart out, they were probably the most underrated team in the country that year.
That being said, Penn State still did prove they could have been selected to play against USC or Texas and have either won or given them one hell of a game. And Michigan was very nearly 8-4 if they wouldn't have run out of magic against Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl. It's amazing how many of Michigan's games that year were down right to the wire (even if the PSU game was a loss for UM, it'd have still been a down to the wire game).
"game was a lot closer than it should have been too considering a missed field goal by Michigan and Ryan missing two open throws that were sure touchdowns."
Yeah, cause Penn State played a great game, which included no fumbles... ROFL!!!
WOLVER-NINE, 9 straight kids, game was a lot closer than it should have been too considering a missed field goal by Michigan and Ryan missing two open throws that were sure touchdowns. By the way Farc, excuses don't do anything, just show how penn sate fans cry about everything because they suck.
I still think Penn State should have won that game, but nothing that can be said or done can undo the way the game turned out, bad calls or not.
Penn State is a second-half team, most of the time they've got a halftime defecit to work their way out of and overcome it. Either way, we'll see what happens in 2008. It's a home game for PSU.
why is an os-who fan watching a michigan highlight?!?!?!?! And if os-who is so good then how come the got jacked up in the title game last year?!?!? o yea and what happened to troy smith.. o i dont think ive herd his name once this year in the nfl... looks like the heismen voters picked a winer their. O and btw great game agasint akron last week.. theri a really strong team
WOW, PSU's record VS scUM is almost as bad as Michigan's Bowl record & record VS daddy (tressel)... 18-20 all time for bowl games.. including 4 STRAIGHT losses.. and an amazing 1-5 VS Tressels Buckeyes..
Ah yes, psu fans. My favorite fans in the world. Full of excuses for the last 12 years of going 0-8 against Michigan. Mmmmm penn state tears taste so good. It's really hard to understand all the shit talking you guys do when you're 0-8 against UofM. Yes enjoy mocking Michigan this season while it lasts, because its a rare time that you will hardly ever see again any time soon. May i remind you though of the 2000,2001,2003,and 2004 seasons at PSU where you went a whopping 5-7, 5-6, 3-9, and 4-7
Oh, Michigan... you call yourselves fans? "Fair-weather" fans is more like it. The stadium was nearing half-empty at the start of the 4th quarter last week against the Ducks! Geez, suck it up and stand by your team when they're having a bad day instead of making excuses.
God damnet. I'll admit Michigans better than Penn State. But I love Penn State. I guess Michigan felt worse pain than us losing to Appaalacian state. I think Michigan didn't give there best game.
Carr asked for and got two seconds put back on the clock late in the 4th; the replay shows he was correct because the clock continued to run after an official indicated it should be stopped. And even if Carr hadn't asked for the time back, it wouldn't really have changed anything. They would have still been at the 10-yard-line with four seconds to go instead of six. With time for only one more play, they probably would have gone for the end zone right away.
Way to Go Michigan on your opening game of the season. Well, there goes your Big Ten title chances this year. Oh well. You guys suck! Looks like you are carrying over well from the end of last year...with that bowl game loss. How many is that in a row now?
Michigan won the game. Fine, PSU had a chance to beat Michigan under the lights in a "white-out," which is somehow supposed to magically push the home team to victory, and they choked again. The throats must be hurting after 8 straight years of choking
Of those 11 national championships, how many were you alive for???... 1! (if that)and how many since 1949?? 1!I will give them props on the 860 wins and the .745 winning %. But what is scUM's all time bowl record?? Try 18-20! (.474) & their last bowl win was against a Ron Zook coached Florida team.
This was a heartbreaking loss for Penn State, but IMHO, the most heartbreaking loss in PSU history was their loss to Minnesota in 1999. That loss started a 5-6 year downfall for the program. Any Penn State fans agree with me on this one?
Yes Michigan did win the game! (Still mad about it) but Penn State players/fans stayed optimistic and ended the year with a 26-23 triple OT thriller VS FSWHO in the Orange Bowl, to cap off an 11-1 season. How'd Michigan fare in their final 5 games after that injustice win???...
Quick questions PlayaHata...when is the last time Michigan won a bowl game? Yeah..that is what I thought. Shut the hell up moron...when you get some bowl wins you can come and talk with the team who has the coach with the second most wins and the most bowl wins. Go Blue! and when I say GO BLUE...I mean the real BLUE...Penn State blue. Not the Michigan blue with yellow urine with it.
Michigan has won 11 national titles and has the best all time win percentage. How many Nat'l Championships does Penn State have? Penn State should go back to wearing pink and stop disgracing blue.
Moral of the story? Refs don't decide games, the teams playing do. And over the last decade, watching Michigan play PSU is like watching the varsity team play the JV!
I know when a caught is made out of bounds when I see it...too bad Big Ten refs can see it...Penn State one this game. We were undefeated in 2005..we just had refs who couldn't see. Out of bounds catch and everyone knows it
you obviously didn't watch the game...Avant's catch was out of bounds...it's real simple: heel on the outside of the white line is out of bounds. Henne's fumble was called correctly...hold on to the football moron.
NSFMF. Avant's toe came down in bounds. A short but discernible time later, his heel came down out of bounds. Under current NCAA rules interpretations, that is a catch. But thanks for playing.
You must be a Big Ten ref too. Big Ten refs are hired from Foot Locker to come out and "officiate" the game. Monkeys can tell when a foot is out of bounds.
Not my problem your overrated QB couldn't hold on to the ball. So anyway...2005 was a great year We were undefeated when it comes to playing in an official sized field...Big Ten Refs like to move the out of bounds lines at times.
If you still insist that Avant was out of bounds, despite the rules interpretation of "toe in followed by heel out => catch," then there's really nothing more to say to you. Enjoy your delusion.
Thanks for the great discussion parkinggod. Try to win a bowl game this year and don't leave all the Michigan fans hanging...your team seems to do that...have a great year and can't convert with a bowl win.
Okay, you're right, it was out of bounds (not really, but...). So, 25-21, Penn State wins. But WAIT, Henne didn't actually fumble the ball either. Therefore, give me back those 8 points. Michigan wins 21-17!!
That play never should have been ruled a fumble; he lost the ball after he went down. So let's pretend for a second that the refs DID make a bad call on Avant's catch at the end (they made a great call, but I'll humor you whiners). I'll give you back those six points, making the score 25-21 PSU. But then you have to give me back my 7 points on Henne's fumble that wasn't, making the score 21-18 Michigan. And we win. Aaaaaagain.
They'd actually have to give Michigan back 8 points. They hurried the PAT, botched the hold, and Kevin Kelly miracled himself into the end zone for the 2PC.
Now why would they be in such a hurry to snap the PAT? Hmm.
Hey Penn State fans, remember that play in this game where the PSU defender stripped Chad Henne and took it to the house for 6 points all in one play? Well, seeing as Michigan won the game (aaaaaagain) and therefore has no reason to complain, no one ever talks about this, but there is actually a photograph showing Henne with his knee on the ground and the ball securely in his hand on that play.
I tried GIS but couldn't find a copy of the picture. All the video I have is inconclusive, which of course means that there wouldn't have been any reason to overturn the call. It looks like both of them have possession at the moment Henne's knee hits, which would make it a dual possession call, but I wouldn't bet anything on it. I can't wait until I build a better PC and start recording these games in HD.
Eh, too bad you didn't show Michigans coach crying like a baby for the refs to put a few seconds back on the clock at the end (which the refs should never have listened due to the fact that the time was right)... or the holding in the end zone... two priceless shots that were the true story behind Michigan winning this game lol...
Argumentum, let's say you have a point. That means instead of throwing an ill-conceived-and-fortunately-incomplete pass to Breaston with :06 to go, Michigan would only have had :04 left and thus would recognize that the next play would be the game's last. Don't you think they would have called the same skinny post to Manningham that they did?
did psu win get screwed this year when they got sacked like 11 times and had to go thorugh 3 qbs no they didnt it was UM dominance so stop whining about it
As a Penn State fan, this is still one of the greatest games in College Football history. Gives me chills. Heartbreaking, but what can you do...all the credit in the world to both teams.
Rule 4, Section 2, Article I (a) : "A player or an airborne player is out of bounds when any part of his person touches anything, other than another player or game official, ON or outside a boundary line."
that means ANY PART of the body, period. Heel included.
so captaincrash24, the question is: why don't you brush up on your rules? dumbfuck.
sorry, you can't make up rules as you go along to go in your favor.
I emailed Curt Johnson, current NCAA referee ( YT won't let me include the link but you can Google "Curt Johnson" and referee ), with the question - and the exact situation. His response: "The current interp. is that if there is a clearly discernable gap between toe then heel, its a catch. If not then no catch."
Which is EXACTLY what I said last week, if you'd have been paying attention. But if thinking the refs gave Michigan that game helps you cope, knock yourself out.
aherrold: Avant's toe came down in-bounds. A short but discernable time later his heel came down out of bounds. Under current rules interpretations, that is a catch. But thanks for playing.
Note that the NFL interprets it differently. If one foot is in, and the other goes 'toe in - discernible time - heel out', it is not a catch.
Avant's foot came down in bounds before it went out of bounds in plain sight. No review necessary. Without selective vision its not hard to see where the toes hit the ground.
You forgot to include in the video how Avant was out of bounds on that reception on the final drive, yet he was called as being in bounds without a review. Not a game to be proud of, because you should have lost it, but it was handed to you by the officials.
Ok first of all that happened over 2 years ago, let if go already your sour loser. second the bowl they played against flordia st. was one of the best bowl games ever. So drop it already
It was a ligit argument, but the truth was the official blew his whistle 3 seconds after the play was dead, thus in the end gave Michigan enough time. GO BLUE!
The barrage of unrepeatable words that came out of my mouth after this day...ARRRRGH!!!!!

"Ah yes, psu fans. My favorite fans in the world. Full of excuses for the last 12 years"
PSHHHH! Michigan fans= Coming up with lame excuses since 1949. Judas, you people are worse than Yankee fans!
& by the way, as long as Lloyd Fraud remains head coach, more & more 0-2 (probably 0-4) starts are on the horizon!

WOW, PSU's record VS scUM is almost as bad as Michigan's Bowl record & record VS daddy (tressel)... 18-20 all time for bowl games.. including 4 STRAIGHT losses.. and an amazing 1-5 VS Tressels Buckeyes..
It sucks, to be, A Michigan Wolverine!!

And we all know how that ended.
parkinggod 4 years ago
u may be right about the time out thing but there was a first down play that was out of bounds that could have changed everything.

Way to Go Michigan on your opening game of the season. Well, there goes your Big Ten title chances this year. Oh well. You guys suck! Looks like you are carrying over well from the end of last year...with that bowl game loss. How many is that in a row now?
We are PENN STATE!!!!!

Big Ten title has nothing to do with this game. The only games that count for the Big Ten title games are Big Ten games.

PlayaHataXC3 4 years ago
Beats the (2) that PSU has total!
Aylafanandre 4 years ago
This was a heartbreaking loss for Penn State, but IMHO, the most heartbreaking loss in PSU history was their loss to Minnesota in 1999. That loss started a 5-6 year downfall for the program. Any Penn State fans agree with me on this one?
gymman1031 4 years ago
Yes Michigan did win the game! (Still mad about it) but Penn State players/fans stayed optimistic and ended the year with a 26-23 triple OT thriller VS FSWHO in the Orange Bowl, to cap off an 11-1 season. How'd Michigan fare in their final 5 games after that injustice win???...
PlayaHataXC3 4 years ago
Quick questions PlayaHata...when is the last time Michigan won a bowl game? Yeah..that is what I thought. Shut the hell up moron...when you get some bowl wins you can come and talk with the team who has the coach with the second most wins and the most bowl wins. Go Blue! and when I say GO BLUE...I mean the real BLUE...Penn State blue. Not the Michigan blue with yellow urine with it.
azazazaz29 4 years ago
Michigan has won 11 national titles and has the best all time win percentage. How many Nat'l Championships does Penn State have? Penn State should go back to wearing pink and stop disgracing blue.
KevintheFink 4 years ago
Most wins (860) and highest winning percentage (.745)
The most conference championships of any college football program in any conference (42)
The most winning seasons (109)
The most undefeated seasons in Division 1-A football (25)
One of only two schools with a winning record against every Division 1-A conference
11 national champion ships (third highest)
The longest current streak of non-losing seasons
The longest current bowl game streak (32 seasons; 1975-present)

penn state doesn't play in BCS bowl games, so it means nada.
Aylafanandre 4 years ago
Moral of the story? Refs don't decide games, the teams playing do. And over the last decade, watching Michigan play PSU is like watching the varsity team play the JV!
wolverineluke 4 years ago
I know when a caught is made out of bounds when I see it...too bad Big Ten refs can see it...Penn State one this game. We were undefeated in 2005..we just had refs who couldn't see. Out of bounds catch and everyone knows it
azazazaz29 4 years ago
I'll trade you Avant's catch (called correctly) for Henne's fumble (called incorrectly). Michigan still wins.
parkinggod 4 years ago
you obviously didn't watch the game...Avant's catch was out of bounds...it's real simple: heel on the outside of the white line is out of bounds. Henne's fumble was called correctly...hold on to the football moron.
azazazaz29 4 years ago
NSFMF. Avant's toe came down in bounds. A short but discernible time later, his heel came down out of bounds. Under current NCAA rules interpretations, that is a catch. But thanks for playing.
parkinggod 4 years ago
You must be a Big Ten ref too. Big Ten refs are hired from Foot Locker to come out and "officiate" the game. Monkeys can tell when a foot is out of bounds.
azazazaz29 4 years ago
That would explain why they called Henne's non-fumble a fumble, then. You can't have it both ways - but that never stops State Pen fans from trying!
parkinggod 4 years ago
Not my problem your overrated QB couldn't hold on to the ball. So anyway...2005 was a great year We were undefeated when it comes to playing in an official sized field...Big Ten Refs like to move the out of bounds lines at times.
azazazaz29 4 years ago
If you still insist that Avant was out of bounds, despite the rules interpretation of "toe in followed by heel out => catch," then there's really nothing more to say to you. Enjoy your delusion.
parkinggod 4 years ago
Thanks for the great discussion parkinggod. Try to win a bowl game this year and don't leave all the Michigan fans hanging...your team seems to do that...have a great year and can't convert with a bowl win.
azazazaz29 4 years ago
Heh. That one *I* can't argue with, at least not recently (and Carr started out so well...).
"Foot Locker" Oh! I get it now! Good one!
parkinggod 4 years ago
wht they review henne's fumble they didnt review avant's catch
farc300 4 years ago
Okay, you're right, it was out of bounds (not really, but...). So, 25-21, Penn State wins. But WAIT, Henne didn't actually fumble the ball either. Therefore, give me back those 8 points. Michigan wins 21-17!!
wolverineluke 4 years ago
That play never should have been ruled a fumble; he lost the ball after he went down. So let's pretend for a second that the refs DID make a bad call on Avant's catch at the end (they made a great call, but I'll humor you whiners). I'll give you back those six points, making the score 25-21 PSU. But then you have to give me back my 7 points on Henne's fumble that wasn't, making the score 21-18 Michigan. And we win. Aaaaaagain.
wolverineluke 4 years ago
They'd actually have to give Michigan back 8 points. They hurried the PAT, botched the hold, and Kevin Kelly miracled himself into the end zone for the 2PC.
Now why would they be in such a hurry to snap the PAT? Hmm.
parkinggod 4 years ago
Hey Penn State fans, remember that play in this game where the PSU defender stripped Chad Henne and took it to the house for 6 points all in one play? Well, seeing as Michigan won the game (aaaaaagain) and therefore has no reason to complain, no one ever talks about this, but there is actually a photograph showing Henne with his knee on the ground and the ball securely in his hand on that play.
wolverineluke 4 years ago
I tried GIS but couldn't find a copy of the picture. All the video I have is inconclusive, which of course means that there wouldn't have been any reason to overturn the call. It looks like both of them have possession at the moment Henne's knee hits, which would make it a dual possession call, but I wouldn't bet anything on it. I can't wait until I build a better PC and start recording these games in HD.
parkinggod 4 years ago

Rule 4, Section 2, Article I (a) : "A player or an airborne player is out of bounds when any part of his person touches anything, other than another player or game official, ON or outside a boundary line."
that means ANY PART of the body, period. Heel included.
so captaincrash24, the question is: why don't you brush up on your rules? dumbfuck.
sorry, you can't make up rules as you go along to go in your favor.
aherrold 4 years ago
I emailed Curt Johnson, current NCAA referee ( YT won't let me include the link but you can Google "Curt Johnson" and referee ), with the question - and the exact situation. His response: "The current interp. is that if there is a clearly discernable gap between toe then heel, its a catch. If not then no catch."
Which is EXACTLY what I said last week, if you'd have been paying attention. But if thinking the refs gave Michigan that game helps you cope, knock yourself out.
parkinggod 4 years ago
aherrold: Avant's toe came down in-bounds. A short but discernable time later his heel came down out of bounds. Under current rules interpretations, that is a catch. But thanks for playing.
Note that the NFL interprets it differently. If one foot is in, and the other goes 'toe in - discernible time - heel out', it is not a catch.
parkinggod 4 years ago
Avant's foot came down in bounds before it went out of bounds in plain sight. No review necessary. Without selective vision its not hard to see where the toes hit the ground.
anonv 4 years ago
You forgot to include in the video how Avant was out of bounds on that reception on the final drive, yet he was called as being in bounds without a review. Not a game to be proud of, because you should have lost it, but it was handed to you by the officials.
